LESSON #26: Email Address on Your Own Domain

By | October 24, 2008

In the past few lessons, we’ve registered a domain name, and then we acquired web hosting.

Today we’re going to start putting your domain to good use, by setting up an email address on it…

Main points:

  • Most people are still using freebie email accounts.

  • Don’t use cheesy email addresses!

  • Why it’s important to have an email address on your own domain:

    1) It looks more professional. This is more important than you may think. You want to invoke TRUST.

    2) You have ultimate control of what’s delivered to your inbox. You can avoid having to search through junkmail folders for important messages, or you can add high levels of filtering.

    3) It can improve your outgoing email deliverability rate. This is an important concept for list building. An increase of a few percent can make a difference of thousands of dollars of profit.

  • (Video shows how to set up an email account via Cpanel)

  • (Video shows how to check email via the web… ie. http://yourdomain.com:2095 )

  • (How to configure Microsoft Outlook for POP3)

  • (How to set up an email forwarder)

  • Forwarders allow you to advertise or give out a certain email address without actually having to manage another email account.

    Action step:

    1) Set up an email account or a forwarder on your own domain (if you don’t yet have one).

    2) Test it and make sure it works.

Important Note: If you’ve changed your primary email address, be sure to update your subscriptions such as Eric’s Tips. For Eric’s Tips, just click the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of any email from me… but on the following page do NOT unsubscribe. Instead simply change your email address to your new address and save it.

Now that you’re all set up with your email, it’s time to turn our attention to building your website starting in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below 🙂

    Have a great day!

      Great Lesson, Thanks Eric!

I have never used a professional email, but I will start doing so…I have so many email accounts, but never a professional one.

My question, from Lesson #26. Frequently, I receive emails that I cannot reply back to, the URL is immediately returned, saying something like “unable to deliver”…and there is no place to “unsubscribe” and these type of
emails are coming more and more frequently…even though they are now going to my spam box, it is a lot of them…
I am wondering how do these people who are offering these so-called business opportunities have an email
address that you can not reply too…what can I do to eliminate these type of emails?
      Thanks so much!

Those are just spammers. You can eliminate many of those emails by using a spam trapper such as Spam Assassin, which is available in your Cpanel account where you set up the email account.

          Hello Eric

Thanks for this information…I will install SPAM ASSASSIN toooooday. This many emails are just awful!

Thank you for explaining the support ticket issue as well.

I have my own domains (a few) that I use for business and some personal items. I also use gmail, but it is mostly
for things like Facebook notifications and some other miscellaneous incoming mail.

Having your own domains is so worth it! You are not sending business emails out from yahoo, hotmail, gmail or other ‘free’ domains.

The past few lessons have been very informative! I did have some difficulty configuring MicroSoft Outlook 2007 with POP3, but I will contact the administrator and get it figured out. Thank you very much for the video series. I look forward to more!

What name do you recommend before the “@”? ‘info’, ‘sales’,’customerservice’, or ‘JohnDoe’@mydomain.com

I purchased a reseller acct, so some of my steps are not matching up with your screen captures on the video, but I think I’m getting there. My question from Lesson 26:
Twice I went to cpanel, clicked on the email icon, set up an acct with 250mb, clicked create, and a red window came up saying the “disk write test failed – either I’ve exceeded my quota or the disk is full.” (Nobody told me there would be a test!)
      Did I miss a step?

      Hi Eric,
I believe this has got to be the most detailed and USEFUL training of its type on the Internet. It shows one how to “eat an elephant…one bite at a time”! I’ve been fighting a switchover from a Vista system that crashed to a new 8.1 O/S and I’m up to my ying-yang with poorly explained procedures that assume the readert has a degree in software engineering. For sure, you seem to have mastered your subject as well as how to explain it simply and concisely..

Please keep the “good stuff” coming. When I’m operational in my business, it looks like I’ll be signing up for your additional coaching program ’cause this time around I have to make things work!

Cheers and thanks for all your efforts.

I have set up my email and can send email’s from that address but I can not receive emails to that address when I try. I see the server address but I cannot make any changes to the manual settings. Any advice would be great.

What Email client are you using? Outlook? Have you tried using the auto-setup from within Cpanel?

If I forward my webmail to a gmail account, can I respond to that email via gmail but still look as if it’s coming from my business email (web mail) account? How would I set that up?

I’m glad you told me about 2095.
I was always logging into the cpannel if I needed to manually check the email.
I have forwarders set on all my emails but occasionally they can be slow.

I am a TOTAL newbie…I love your lessons, but I need to know the best place to go to set up a website. It looks like from your lessons, you’re assuming we already have a website?

From your explanation are you saying we should have an email address for every domain name registered?

        Hello Raymond,

No, that would not always be necessary. However, if you are engaging with customers via email captured at a particular site, it would be good to set up an email for that site.

Your lessons are the best version ,i will revise them again and again untill that i undestend as well .
I have not any web site or any business in the internet yet , i want to learn all the basic things about data processing and the internet and i guess that i found the best one here. ( I don’t agree when they say that we dont need to any knowldge to do a business in the internet or to have a lot off money with doing no things. Having a business in the internet is a real work that needs to concentrate and searching and work and love it too. )
I found also one of the best guru of the marketing that i fallow, who are Patric Chain , he is really a great professional .
Think you so match for thoses explanations precises.
I really appreciate and like your work.

      Hi Eric,

The forwarding email feature is great as it’s hard to get rid of my oldy email.

I have to get the habit to use the professional one.

      Kindly
