Edition #119
Last night I had dinner in Washington DC with Tom Kulzer, the CEO of Aweber.
In case you didn’t know, Aweber is the company I use to manage my email lists (such as Eric’s Tips).
We talked about some of Aweber’s new features, several of which I was not even aware of. One of the cool things that I didn’t previously know about is their “geo-targeting” feature.
It allows you to segment your list by geographic location. It’s not perfect, but it gives a good estimate of most locations.
So if you received an email about this edition, please let me know: is the location in the subject line of the email close to where you live? If you’ve got a minute, I’d appreciate if you could post your location in the comments of my blog. I also think it will be neat just to see where everyone is from.
Aweber also has a mapping function. I’ve posted a map below which shows where all of my subscribers are located around the world:
According to Alexa.com, only about 50% of all visitors to the Eric’s Tips blog are from the US, and the map from Aweber seems to coincide with that number.
It’s a little mind-boggling for me to think about all of you reading this all over the world, and very humbling at the same time.
We also talked a lot about email strategies and statistics. Tom is fanatical about that type of stuff, and he gave me a lot of great information. He actually posts a lot of great tips on the Aweber company blog, which is a goldmine of information for their customers.
Since a lot of you have been asking me for “more tips” lately, I’ll share a couple of them with you here.
Best time of day:
Morning is by far and away the best time for emailing your list. Most emails are opened in the 9AM-10AM range. While I don’t always stick to it, I often send my emails just a little earlier than that, to make sure they arrive shortly prior to this hot zone.
Best day of the week:
While it seems that it might be getting a little overly-used in the internet marketing community, Tuesday is often the best day to send an email to your list.
Avoiding spam filters:
While you should avoid spammy keywords in your emails (to stay out of spam filters), you should NOT use special characters and weird spellings in an attempt to get around the spam filters. Doing so will only make you look more like a spammer (I need to go fix that on some of my older autoresponder messages).
I hope you found those helpful, and Aweber has many more helpful materials and tips for their customers. If you’re not already building a list, you NEED to be. And if you don’t already have a company that you’re using, I highly recommend Aweber.
Remember to post your location in the comments so we can see where everyone lives 🙂
Have a great day!

Yes, I’m near Southampton, England.

Wow! That was really cool – you got me! I’m in Northeast Alabama – and Aweber picked a town just 20 minutes from me!
That is really cool – and definitely cool to see your worldwide subscribers!!
your friend was right .i am from Bucharest ,Romania .
Hello Eric.
Yes ( Brantford)
You were right on the money.

Eric,
No mention of location in the Email.
I’m located in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Pretty amazing the global coverage you’ve got!
Hi Eric,
I am from Wales (South Wales) in the United Kingdom.
I am new to Eric’s Tips, but I am very impressed with what I have seen so far.

hi,
Yes I indeed live around the Amsterdam area in the Netherlands.
Aweber was spot on!
Thanks for your posts,
Teri
My wife and I live in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands
Hi Eric,
Love your tips. I hail from Santa Cruz, California.
I’m in Westminster, CA, exactly where your email said I was!
Hi Eric,
You were off by around 100 miles. I live in Susanville, Ca which is about a 2 hour drive north east from Chico.
Eric, you are close about 15 mi from vincennes at bicknell,in.
Assuming you meant the state of Pennsylvania, you email was 100% accurate with ‘Erie’.
Right state, wrong county. AWeber said “Los Altos” which is in the Bay Area, but we’re in Oakland. However, our ISP COVAD is located in San Jose, which is a pretty close match. If AWeber had not only done a reverse DNS query on the IP where I signed up, but then also looked up the registration for the domain name they found in that PTR, they probably would’ve found us… although we’re registered with Network Solutions, who seem a bit allergic to automated inquiries.
Hi Eric,
Nice to hear from you on Aweber. I’m from India.
Cheers.
Yes. I am from Chicago and the whether is fabulous right now. It’s in the mid-70’s. But you know what they say about Chicago. If you don’t like the weather just wait a few minutes and it’ll change.
Absolutely, I am selling websites in Minneapolis. http://www.TheRealDesign.com – Keep the awesome tips coming.
you were 40 miles off i live in saint john new brunswick
I’m from Markham, Ontario, Canada
While there was no location in the midst of your message, I thought the location of your dinner with Aweber’s CEO was perhaps part of the geo-targeting feature. I live about 25 miles outside the center of Washington, DC, if indeed you travelled from Fort Collins, CO to DC — which either way is pretty neat!
By the way, because of a fellow from Longmont, CO, I’ve become a fan of Fat Tire beer over the past couple of beers — but haven’t seen them anywhere east of the Mississippi River.
Thanks for all of the great info!
It worked for my location – Southlake, Texas, USA, near Dallas/Fort Worth.
Yep, you got it right! Welcome to Western Pennsylvania Eric!
Hi Eric,
Referring to the first line of your email, I do not have any idea where Adamsville is, so do not know how the weather is there…… Cherokee Village, Arkansas, is home for us, and our weather is in the high 70’s Fahrenheit, low humidity, high clouds, lots of flowering trees, beautiful this time of year! Keep up the good work with your tips!
Sharon
Good guess Eric.Canada is right but your
mapping system has lost its tracking, as far
as pin pointing and thats a good thing.
Don’t you think.
Well, actually, as of the time you wrote your email, I was right there in Washington DC at the same hotel you were at, at Yanik’s event 😉
Seriously though, for some reason Aweber seems to think I’m from Dallas, but as we’ve discussed in past conversations, I’m from Long Island, NY., so I guess it’s not always accurate. Maybe it has something to do with my email account being from verizon (similar to what Tom Kulzer was saying about AOL users usually showing up as being from Virginia)?
Anyway, it was good to see you down there, and thanks again for dinner and the advice!
Keep up the good work,
Neil

Yes, Eric, I’m in the UK, and I live about 12 miles from the centre of Slough.
Slough is in the county of Berkshire, and I’m near Amersham in Buckinghamshire.
Hi Eric,
Right you are, I’m from Kazakhstan though I’ve incorporated in USA.
I think I’m the only one and first woman from this country.
Have you ever heard about this country? If not, then do not hesitate to ask me.
I go in for Internet and Network Marketing, Forex trading.
Nice to meet you 🙂
Best wishes
Hi Eric,
Good tips….I’ll have to spend some more time here soon.
Oh, I’m from the US, but live in Japan…near Yokohama.
I’m hoping Aweber will build in the capability to do a mailing from within your email client, w/o bouncing back and forth between lists. Of course followup are automatic, but if there were the capability of doing a broadcast directly from within Outlook, that’d be a sweet time saver.
Hello Eric,
Of course you got it right. I am from Nairobi, Kenya.
Like what you do. Keep it up.
Hi Eric,
AWeber is spot on. I am in South Africa – but quite a long way from Parow. I live in Durban, South Africa on the east coast.

Wow Eric…that’s pretty close to home. New Rochelle (NY) is just few miles from me.
Hey Eric,
I’m from Red Deer Alberta Canada. By looking at the map there are either not many Canadians on your list or they don’t respond as well.
If you’re ever up this way try “Hubie’s Diner” in Westpark by the College. It still has ‘satellite jukeboxes’ ( HUH? Ask your grand-parents) at each booth and lots of momentoes from the Elvis era, pictures, posters of Elvis and Marilyn and Jimmy (Dean not Hendrix) , newspaper clips and lots of little collectables to look at. They make a great breakfast but be sure to bring ca$h because part of the ’50’s theme is that there were no ATM’s then and they don’t take credit cards either.
Now, if it’s Sat morning and you’re feeling the night before….Blarney Stone South has a great ‘hangover special’….steak, eggs, hashbrowns and toast PLUS a pint of your favorite and only 10 bucks C$…
Yeah Eric, I figure this map is a good thing
Yep, got it right. I’m located just South of Pittsburgh,
Pa. U.S.A_Finally warming up after a cold Winter
season.
Have a Wonderful Day
Smitty
Hi Eric,
Your Aweber is perfect. I’m living in Zagreb. The weather is like early spring and we are waiting summer to go to Adriatic coast. If You have in plan to come to Croatia please let me Know! Best regards ! Ivica
Hi Eric,
Well, Aweber put me in a small town about 40 miles north of where I live. I actually live in Helena, Montana not Cascade. Helena is the state capital, but is not by any means the largest Monana city at about 35,000, which is small by some state and country standards. But we are spread out here. Cascade, on the other hand probably has a population of less than 5,000. Both places, though, have some pretty nice scenery around them.
Kathy
