Where in the World are My Subscribers?

By | March 25, 2007

Edition #119

Last night I had dinner in Washington DC with Tom Kulzer, the CEO of Aweber.

In case you didn’t know, Aweber is the company I use to manage my email lists (such as Eric’s Tips).

We talked about some of Aweber’s new features, several of which I was not even aware of. One of the cool things that I didn’t previously know about is their “geo-targeting” feature.

It allows you to segment your list by geographic location. It’s not perfect, but it gives a good estimate of most locations.

So if you received an email about this edition, please let me know: is the location in the subject line of the email close to where you live? If you’ve got a minute, I’d appreciate if you could post your location in the comments of my blog. I also think it will be neat just to see where everyone is from.

Aweber also has a mapping function. I’ve posted a map below which shows where all of my subscribers are located around the world:

World map

According to Alexa.com, only about 50% of all visitors to the Eric’s Tips blog are from the US, and the map from Aweber seems to coincide with that number.

It’s a little mind-boggling for me to think about all of you reading this all over the world, and very humbling at the same time.

We also talked a lot about email strategies and statistics. Tom is fanatical about that type of stuff, and he gave me a lot of great information. He actually posts a lot of great tips on the Aweber company blog, which is a goldmine of information for their customers.

Since a lot of you have been asking me for “more tips” lately, I’ll share a couple of them with you here.

Best time of day:

Morning is by far and away the best time for emailing your list. Most emails are opened in the 9AM-10AM range. While I don’t always stick to it, I often send my emails just a little earlier than that, to make sure they arrive shortly prior to this hot zone.

Best day of the week:

While it seems that it might be getting a little overly-used in the internet marketing community, Tuesday is often the best day to send an email to your list.

Avoiding spam filters:

While you should avoid spammy keywords in your emails (to stay out of spam filters), you should NOT use special characters and weird spellings in an attempt to get around the spam filters. Doing so will only make you look more like a spammer (I need to go fix that on some of my older autoresponder messages).

I hope you found those helpful, and Aweber has many more helpful materials and tips for their customers. If you’re not already building a list, you NEED to be. And if you don’t already have a company that you’re using, I highly recommend Aweber.

Remember to post your location in the comments so we can see where everyone lives 🙂

Have a great day!

Hey Eric, I live in The Netherlands and the place in the subject line is indeed only a few miles from my hometown!

    Great stuff,

I am indeed from Albuquerque, NM which is exactly what the email indicated. Cool feature, this would allow for some interesting customization of email. I will have to investigate Aweber

    Hi Eric,
Your target was about 1 hour East of where I live in Georgia, USA… Conyers is about 30 minutes East of Atlanta and I am about 30 minutes West of Atlanta, but as you probably know everything in this area is part of Atlanta, GA… As for the weather it is GREAT – been in the upper 70’s and low 80’s most of March… Great Service you offer in your Tips – Keep Up The Good Work…

    Hello Eric,

I’m in Redding, California which is around 190 miles North of Sacramento and around 75 South of Mount Shasta on the Big I-5 and where the summers run into the triple digits like 110% to 118% heat wave which is lots of fun to work in when your work is all outside stuff.

    Have a great day Eria.

    Yea, Aweber got it right.
I’m in Middletown NY USA – some 60 miles north of New York City and 20 miles from West Point.

If only I could ‘affiliate’ with someone who had something desirable on offer for US ARMY officers. I could easily ‘post’ paper flyers around the academy.

Already a subscriber to Aweber but I can’t seem to build the website I want.

Anyone got contacts that can supply InfraRed digital cameras, sunvisor LCD monitors AND (somewhat powerful) IR light sources – all as a ‘drop-ship’ DIY installation ‘kit’ suitable for motor vehicles AND for under US$500? I just want to market them – not stock inventory. Why should luxery car owners (Hummer, Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac) get all the breaks?

    Keep-up the good work; Larry
(Damn deer – nearly hit another one last night as it jumped out of the brush)

    Hi Eric,

This is Arne from Norway, and correctly as per your question I live only 5 minutes away from the Fornebu area.
Its the week before easter, and the weather is terrific and very warm for this time of the year. I am now sittingin in the sun outside my flat, and the temperature is around 20 degrees celsius.

    Have a nice day

Greetings from Edmonton,Canada. Aweber got it dead on. To those just starting on the
web, keep working on it. Success will come. Learn, read and apply what you learn. Don’t
make my mistake and go for every program out there. Ron from Australia had it right.
Be selective and don’t listen to every guru out there.
    Have a good day!

    Dear Eric:
Yes, your prognosis is within two miles of where I am sitting. It is fascinating that recognition of location makes the message feel more personal -that has the potential to charm, confuse, or chase people away! Regards, Bob

    Hi Eric;

I’m in Hoboken NJ, just across the Hudson from Manhattan.
My location cited in an email addressed to me is very “eye catching”. I read all of Eric’s Tips and found myself more inclined to open today’s email when “How’s the weather in Hoboken” was placed in the title. It’s very personable and that always works.

My message says I’m from Washington. It did not say Washington state or Washingtion DC. Right now I’m located close to Houston Texas but the Washington location probably is due to my Internet service being Hughes.net and their satellite uplink is located in Maryland.

    Hi Eric, hi everyone!

Wow! I’d love to have such a map, with all that visits! (And these are only your subscribers!!!)
Your system was right in your email: I am from northern Algeria, northern Africa, but I don’t seem to be detected yet on that Alexa map (there seems to be one Algerian from the south..)
I didn’t have much time to read a lot on your blog, but I bookmarked it of course, because I find it as cool as informative, and a little inspiring.
See you! Have a nice day everyone! 😉

I’m in Vancouver, BC and the email tagged me as being in a smaller suburb quite a ways out. It was pretty freaky to see that suburb in the subject. It did get the country correct in the body.

    Pretty neat.

    Hi Eric,
I guess Aweber doesn’t know where I am, the subject line said “the area” and the places in the message body were just blank. I’m in Conway, NH. Great tips, keep ’em coming!

Hi, nothing very exotic here. I don’t live in the Chichibu area as Aweber seems to think. I live here in the heart of Tokyo, with tens of thousands of other westerners.

There is no mention of my state or city. I live in the northeastern portion of Washington State about 15 miles west of Spokane. It is raining and the past week the temperature has fluctuated between 30-60s.
