LESSON #10: Online Business Terms Defined

By | July 10, 2008

You may have noticed that the world of internet marketing has a language of it’s own, full of words that you might not be familiar with.

Since I’m going to be using those words throughout the lessons, it’s important that you have some understanding of what they mean, or at least a resource where you can find accurate definitions.

So today I’m simply going to cover the terms. More specifically, I’m going to cover 247 words that are used in the online business world…

(Watch this video…)

Action steps:

1) Go through the list of terms, and if there are any you aren’t familiar with, take the time to read the definition.

So now you’ll know what I’m talking about when I say FTP and PHP and PPC.

There’s a lot of so-called experts out there trying to tell you how to build your business. The question is, WHO should you listen to and who should you trust? I’ll be answering that question in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

Have a great day!

    Eric…
I think this is a wonderful reference that everyone should print out to keep handy for future lessons. Even though I knew a majority of the terms(maybe about 75%)I still think it will be very useful later on in lessons when you start using them more.It will be nice to have them at my fingertips!
    Best Wishes,

    Great list Eric,
I know most of them but will probably end up purchasing the PDF anyway just to have it conveniently tucked away. If you get a chance…I would love to see more of this kind of stuff. Also, although I have not purchased XsitePro2 yet, I thought it was amazing because of its simplicity and all of the tasks that can be done with it. Great price too!! 4 days ago I had back surgery, pain pills are not working so, I’ll take some prayer if you remember.
Great lessons and thanks for the payers,
    Ron Marzuolo

P.S. The best information you have given me so far was that you reminded me to tithe! Thanks for that! I think it is worth more than all of the 100 or so lessons you are offering for free!

XSitePro2 is the best web building software out there. It’s brilliant. I bought V1 last year and got version 2 immediately it was released. I built my site with it and the great thing is you can build any number of sites with it, it’s so simple. It’s designed for IMs. Btw I have used Dreamweaver and Front Page. There is no comparison. XSP2 is one of the best investments I’ve made. End of plug.

    Hi Eric:
I hope you are having a good day. I have a question for you? I see that to receive your ebook and resale rights I have to use PayPal, I have been having trouble with PayPal they keep sending me messages that someone is trying to use my account and I got worried and deleted my account with them is there another way I can pay for these items? maybe by Credit Card. Do you have a secure site for this option? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Gus

Hi Eric I knew a lot of those words but not all
of them. I think you’re the bomb for clarifying
all those words for us. I am going to have to come
back and get them. Don’t worry about the spiteful
person who tried to take a whack out on you because of the kid. I agree with you he has Absolutely got to be kidding. And in No Way is a
small child crying with it’s mother or father
a crime or a reflection against you as a parent. You must be doing something right the
children have their parents at home how COOL is that.

    Warm Regards

Currently just PayPal. If some more people ask, I may add 2Checkout as an option. However, you should not be worried to sign up for a new PayPal account. Almost assuredly, those emails you received were “phishing” emails. They were not sent by PayPal, but rather by spammers who were trying to steal your information. Just don’t ever click on any links in emails appearing to be from PayPal and you should be fine.

Thanks Nadine 🙂 I decided to delete that guy’s comment. I normally don’t do that, but I didn’t want it to distract from the lesson since it was so close to the top of the comments.

I agree, most “phishing” emails I have received were from paypal. Usually I hover over the link in the email, and if the url in the status bar shows a number (ip address) after the http:// string, then I know it is phishing and delete it immediately.
To be safe, never click on any link in your email, specially if it is from paypal.

  19. More Terms

It is amazing how many different terms that each industry has that is exclusive to it, and how some terms can mean one thing for one industry and something completely different in another.

    Eric,

As a newbie, I really love your lessons and wise advice.

I want you to know that I’m totally blind and find that your blog is quite accesible to my screen reader. Especially the fact that the video play button is well defined and my software can register it. I assure you, this accesibility with video players is challenging. I thank you for all of this! Yes, they likely are phishing emails–I get them frequently myself. When I do, I forward them to spoof@paypal.com where they can analyze them.

Eric is spot-on that you should never click the links in those emails, as it will appear to be a legitimate PayPal site but will instead be a thief at work. A shame we have to deal with this kind of garbage, isn’t it? Getting hard to find anyone with an honest bone in their body anymore. Eric is one of the few we can trust across the board– a man of integrity.

With the resale version, the ebook is yours to sell for any price and keep all the profits. But it doesn’t come with Private Label Rights, so you can’t edit it and put your name on it.

    Eric,
Thanks for the list. there are definitely some things I don’t recognize on the list. It is definitely like learning a new language.
By the way, I didn’t hear any background noise. And if I did , I would congratulate you for being able to work at home to spend time with your children. I have been on calls with programs I’m involved in and spent thousands to be a part of. The person leading the calls’ child walks in to say goodnight during the call. It’s completely endearing. It shows us a more personal side of you. I don’t have children, but I admire loving and dedicated parents who put their children first.

    With Gratitude,
