LESSON #11: Who Should You Listen To?

By | July 12, 2008

I’m glad that you’ve chosen to learn from me, but chances are good that you’ve noticed a lot of voices vying for your attention. There are a lot of so-called experts out there trying to tell you how to build your business.

The question is: WHO should you listen to and who should you trust?

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

1) Learn from real experts, not wannabe’s

2) Look for proof and testimonials (but don’t base your opinion solely on it)

3) Listen to someone you can understand

4) Listen to someone who has failed at times

5) Listen to someone who’s not afraid to tell you what you don’t want to hear

6) Don’t write someone off just because they’re trying to make money off of you (unless they are too manipulative)

7) Trust someone and follow them, but not blindly

8] Learn how to weigh the facts (this is the most important key)

Action steps:

1) Find someone to listen to.

Find someone who has done what you want to do. Someone who is a real expert and not a wannabe. Someone you can trust. That person might be me, or it might be someone else. The important thing is that you find someone you can trust, and then follow them with open eyes and a discerning heart.

We need to cover one final prerequisite before we develop the vision and plan for your online business. It’s sort of a missing piece, and I’ll be revealing it in the next lesson.
As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

Have a great day!

Hi Eric and anyone else who could answer this. Eric advised us not to buy anything else. I get that. However, I’ve recently joined a MLM team, one that I DO believe in and with someone I DO trust….no worries Eric, I’m sure you probably know him. My dilemma is, should I fork out another $47 for the book Magnetic Sponsoring? I’ve heard awesome things about this book. I am using forums, myspace and I’m getting ready to publish an ezine article. Are these the same suggestions that Magnetic Sponsoring offers? Will I gain anything by spending another $47??
By the way, Eric……LOVE the hair!

    Thanks in advance.

Good lesson! There are a few people I listen to but for right now, I’m focusing on listening to you. The reason? Internet business is all about learning and I don’t think that will ever change. But listening to too many experts at the same time is overwhelming and you wind up not learning anything as a result. So – I’ve made my decision to learn slowly and steadily. Admittedly, it’s sometimes very difficult to stick to baby steps to learn what I need to know to succeed online but that’s where the discipline of staying on track kicks in. It’s been difficult lately, I broke my ankle at work so I’m on worker’s compensation (which pays diddly squat) and I’m still not at that point where I can spend any decent amount of time on line due the pain I’m in because of the injury I suffered. Hopefully that will change soon. My goal is to not ever have to go back to my old job because of my online success – so I’m motivated to make that happen. Thanks Eric for teaching me what I need to know to make my dream a reality.

    Thanks Ron

    Hi Eric,
Great info here. I’ve been trying to answer this question for sometime Thank You

I’ve followed many, to which they were wannabes, later I found this out big waste of time. I have a few in mind I’d like to follow (you are one of them) I have followed your name around for a while and I like the way get your message out.

One of the things I notice about some ‘gurus’ marketers out there, they give out these free vidoes, tutorials, then ask that you leave questions and comments for them to answer. The ones I end up listening to more are the ones that actually reply to your questions and comments. Too many times I have left messages on blogs, sent support, and They do not reply! What a crock in my opinion I know they are busy but they should say so and not say they read and respond to your questions when they don’t.

    Hope that made sense LOL

I love your lessons Eric keep them coming I have been here for years and I am actually learning something Finally!!!!

Sorry to post again but I did have a question about who to follow? Is it better to follow a marketer within your niche and is successful, or to follow someone else outside of your niche? Mainly, should you look for someone within your niche or outside your niche or it really doesn’t matter.

If there is someone in your niche who is actually teaching how to do what they do, then I think they would be an ideal teacher. But would guess that in many niches, there are not any teachers like that, in which case you would need to follow someone who teaches how to market to any niche.

    Hi Eric

Thank You so much for the great lessons, I am really enjoying them.

I think you are a very good teacher, your lessons are very informative, detailed and very
clear for people to understand. Definitely it
will be a hot product once is finished, you should sell it, I am sure most of us would love
    to be your affiliates.

I was reading some of the comments and I sense
a lot of distrust, when the marketers are trying to sell them something, we all are trying to start an Internet Business which involves SALES AND MARKETING, and selling is the main ingredient in a business to be successful, either is a product or a service,
online or offline, and can not always be free, othewise we wouldn’t make any money.

So again, Thank You so much, for this one time
    free opportunity.

God Bless You and your family

    Eric,
Thank you for all your lessons. I wish I had received them earlier. I have spent a lot of money for material that has proven to be useless to me. I decided that most of them assume there is previous knowledge which I do not have. You start from the beginning and take a person through every step. I appreciate that.
    Thank you, Eric

Ditto with the issue. I now use two “users”. One user on Windows is for xsitepro2. there are no background programs for 2nd user. Then I switch between users depending on what I work on.

I’ve been around for about two years and I would have given anything to have had Erics picks. I’ve even had gurus call me up and try to pressure me to join their program and say things like “Well where do you expect to be a year from now?” While they want $800 for a course.

Thanks for this sage advice. I’ve found that the most distracting thing is free advice coming from everywhere.

I think you might want to add using most of one’s time doing rather than spending a great deal of time listening to the point that it impacts getting things done.

Hi Eric, Larry here I need your opinion on something. Have you heard of S.M.C.? If you have I would like your input on this. I understand that it is not a get rich plan but it does sound like it is a good investment. What do you think or anyone else that is out thier. Thank you Eric fot the lesson and anyone else that can give info on S.M.C.

I have not tried SMC, but I have watched their entire infomercial, and here is my opinion…

I do not think it is a good investment of time. The potential payoff is too small… I was not impressed by the testimonials on their commercial– and those are top performers.

I’d say it’s similar to having a franchise (maybe it is a franchise?). Franchises are good for certain types of people who just want to follow a system and live within its boundaries. But you have a lot more potential if you build your own business.

The people who get the richest from SMC are the owners of SMC. It’s a smart business model on their part.

    Hi Eric
I have been scammed and burned more than once and a few where pretty bad so I know what Eric says is true and yes research all you can.

As for the SMC question I know a person that did do some “business” with them and boy did she get burned. They actually set her up with “their” accountants and legal department. She was told she did not have to pay taxes on what she earned. Needles to say she was in big trouble in less then two years.
As for me I am not a newbie to the internet or computers but to marketing I am some what. The info you have provided thus far is great. I wake everyday waiting for the next one.
I’m not looking for “the get rich quick” but for some steadily growing income. I am a stay at home dad and foster parent (stay at home for medical reasons. I can’t wait to get started..

    Thank you again

My son tried to build a business with SMC but gave up after much frustration. He figured he would be able to sell things on eBay and make some money. People wanted to get the items for less than what he had to pay for them. I bought some things from him, but the products were by no means top of the line. My pot rack broke at the hook; my fountain motor froze — just little irritations like that. If you want to sell other people’s stuff, look for a better supplier.

Eric, thank you for your lessons. Learn how to learn. Man, I wish I had known that many years ago. I spun my wheels in college the first time. This time I am well on my way to graduating with honors, providing I can earn enough money to finance the last two terms. I can’t wait to get started. I hope I can further my e-business by selling things people really need and therefore will be willing to buy.
