LESSON #13: Getting a Vision for Your Business

By | July 16, 2008

Up until this point, we’ve essentially been covering the requirements and prerequisite knowledge necessary to increase your chances of building a successful online business.

Today marks a turning point.

It’s time to begin focusing on your personal situation, and to turn our attention to your future business…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Without vision, your business probably won’t succeed.

  • I describe vision as being able to “see” a clear picture of your fulfilled goals in your mind.

  • It’s like the box cover of a difficult puzzle…

  • You must begin with the end in mind.

  • Almost every success in my life has come AFTER having a vision for it. (For example, when I won the state championship, and every time I launch a product)

  • The successful business owners that I’ve known ALL have vision.

  • It’s kind of like looking at the world from 30,000 feet. You see the big picture, and not the problems.

  • If you lose sight of your vision, you lose hope. And if you lose hope, it’s game over.

  • As we progress in the lessons, we’ll keep moving forward step by step, but if you don’t start by getting a vision, further efforts could be somewhat futile.

  • If you set your target too low, you may hit it, but there is almost no chance that you will exceed it. On the other hand, if you set your target too high, you may fail, but you will be further along than the “low” target. Therefore it’s better to set your vision higher.

  • One of the biggest things I see holding people back is a “victim mentality”.

  • “Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop this picture. Never think of yourself as failing; never doubt the reality of the mental image. That is most dangerous, for the mind always tries to complete what it pictures. So always picture ‘success’ no matter how badly things seem to be going at the moment.” – Norman Vincent Peale

  • Many of us have taken on a “just get by” mentality.

  • The size of your vision will dictate the size of the result.

  • YOU are valuable. Don’t sell yourself short.

  • Here’s my “disclaimer” that I forgot to include in the video…. “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Prov. 16:9)

    Action steps:

I want you to take a moment to tell me your vision for your business. The vision can involve other areas of your life too, but since we’re working on building your business, it should be focused on your business.

It’s important to write your vision down, so go ahead and post it in the comments below. This is YOUR vision, and there is NO wrong answer.

Focus on the big picture. Don’t worry about the details of how you will get there. We’ll worry about that stuff when we learn about goal setting and business plans, and I’ll be talking about those things in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

    Have a great day!

In my vision I see myself before or during mid-July 09, having a business & personal coaching business that gives my clients the results they want (or more), and that gives me enormous satisfaction, the freedom to choose which location I want to live in or travel to, and bringing in at least $100,000 per year. I have the love of my life at my side, and we are each successful in a way that pleases both of us and enhances our relationship. I am emotionally & mentally healthy because my basic needs are more than just “met.” In my vision, I am thrilled by reaching this audacious goal that completely contradicts my entire previous experience, upbringing and culture! I am grateful for the freedom this has brought me as I can now travel to be with my family, and to move near my family, and to find my family the housing that they want. I also see myself enjoying great dinner parties in my own home that looks just like I’ve imagined it, in the surroundings I’ve imagined it. By mid-July 2010, I am expressing my creativity in numerous ways, in song, in writing, in movement, in painting – and I have have received commissions for outdoor sculptures of the type I began making in early July 08!! I spend so much time laughing while working that my work doesn’t feel like “work.” In fact, because the income that’s coming from these creative endeavors is so good, I began to consider cutting back on my coaching. By January 2009, I see myself receiving and acting on inpiration to produce and market information products via the internet. These products produce MORE inspiration, which then produce MORE products. My internet income alone is over $100,000 a year and increasing monthly. I no longer care what my health insurance premiums are. I am enjoying my wonderful health. I am the happiest I have ever been, happier than I believed possible. I am delighted to share my experiences. I am invited to speak at symposiums and seminars of all types, types I never had imagined before, and I am thrilled to meet and get to know more and more wonderful people. The best thing is that I can be with the people I love, and that I have more and more people to love. My community of loving, supportive folks has grown at least 20-fold since July 08. I tithe joyfully. I am giving my children the knowledge and ability and reason to believe that they, too, can succeed beyond their wildest dreams, and that, like me, their past does not foretell the future. My greatest pleasure is seeing that constraints that chained me for so many prior years are my life are now broken – and I am free of those constraints – AND I am now sharing that ability to live freely with many, many other people. I am able to share that greatest joy to support projects that will enable my children, their children and all human beings to live in ways that protect and enhance the earth, to lift all humans to health, happiness and prosperity. I am part of the great support system of the earth. I have no fear, only faith. I give thanks to God and to all who have supported me and who now support me. Heaven is within me.

Hi: At heart I am a farmer, an architect, a mason, a builder.
I envision developing a business where “ALL” that join build
their financial success. My hope is to learn to share this on
the Internet. What I seek already exist but it is not offered,
due to greed of our current system.

      I have developed myself to a 1 : 0.91 financial average. This
means “On a monthly basis the funds flowing into my household
      produce a 0.09% LOSS.

How much of your monthly expenses accrue to your net worth?
When we reach 1:1 we will have 100% gain in long term
equity and be on our way to financial success through financial
      stability.

      As any farmer can tell you;
      (A) You must choose your seeds
      (B) Prepare your soil
      (C) tend to your chop
      (D) Harvest at the correct time
      AND EVERY FARM IS DIFFERENT.

      Neal,

I share most of the same vision you share. Only we have different interests in going about the business as part of our incomes (naturally).
One of my businesses I like helping others with computer problems. This is one stream of income for me. Another is informational, like you. I’m not a pilot, but I’d like to fly with my family to different places around the world.
The rest of what you wrote, is pretty much my dream also. Altruistic as it may be, thanks for sharing your feelings as I know some of these things are probably pretty personal to you.
      Eric,
I really appreciate what you have here. You’re inspirational in many more ways than you’ll probably know. I’ve been a silent observer for quite some time.
This last video (Lesson 13) has brought me out of “hiding”. 🙂 Thanks for the reminder to stay focused on the big picture, especially when it gets rough.

      Eric,

Thanks for the opportunities you are presenting.

My vision is not exactly well defined yet, but is beginning to come through the cobwebs in my mind.

I envision being able to build a business that will allow me to work where I want and when I want.

I already have a business as a software developer and IT/Business Consultant, but it is too dependent on maintaining time and place commitments to my clients. I love what I do, but I want to be able to offer my services, without the encumbrance of having to worry about charging on an hourly or project basis. It would be nice to be able to go to a client and say I can provide you with the custom software you want for free, because I have other sources of income that allow me to do that.

My business will allow me the time and financial freedom to teach at the university level, which is something I am beginning to do.

My business will, more importantly, allow me the time I would like to spend more time with my church, where I can serve people and help them through their struggles.

My business will allow me the financial freedom to travel to see my children and help them establish their own business opportunities.

There are a number of niche markets this may encompass, but the overall vision is to open the door for opportunities to serve others and do so without having to worry about financial or time commitments.

I am a writer, teacher, and consultant. I am creating an online information empire, focusing on serving nonfiction writers and screenwriters. My ever-expanding, abundant income comes from many sources. This income grants me the freedom to write content at a time and place of my choosing, serving my readers and customers to enable them to become better, more successful writers. I travel internationally, at a luxury level, promoting my products, speaking at conferences, consulting, and so on. I live a healthy, happy, peaceful, abundant life, fulfilling my life purpose to teach (in all its many forms).

      Dear Eric,

This is your Lesson 12 that I have listened. Your are great in delivering lesson. The most important of all it is to help people want to enter into online business.

MY VISION: I want to be successful in this online business. Earn money to an extent that can meet my expenses to travel and stay abroad with my wife. See historical places. Meet people of different culture. Have friendship with them.
For all this I want to earn about ONE million dollar a year.
I have started to learn on line business and want to make a clear picture of the road with all the hurdles to clear and reach to my goal.

Your lessons are great help in understanding the online business. Off course I am also listening to the audios and videos of Mike G, Cody Moya, and some other experience people.

I don’t know if my above submission will find a place on your comments page. My past comments were ignored or not placed for reason best know to you.

My vision is to not only be debt free but to be able to paint again. Painting is my passion. And to help out anyone in need of cash. And to live where I want plus a vacation home and travel in luxury and be proserous during these hard economic times and travel the world and put content on the web that helps people to realize their dreams, or at least to figure out what those dreams are.
Thanks for this opportunity to share.

      Hi Eric:
The vision that I have for my online business is to make the transition from former construction worker into something that will replace and even exceed the income that I earned from my former trade. With degenerative back problems now I no longer have the option of pursuing my former profession, and returning to school for a transition into a new career would be too time consuming and a financial hardship at this point, so an online, work from home business is my hard-target goal now.

HI eric,my vision is to take my off line business success to online success
Thus reducing the hard long hours of 30 odd yrs ,of sometimes working 100hre per week.
Im only 51 but believe ive a good no of years in me to achieve a goal of mine and that is to
help the indigenous people of australia, particularly the young Who are PERISHING because they do not have a VISION.
To achieve this goal requires me to be income rich but not be time poor.I have semi retired from offline bus due to health reasons but i beleive even that has been oart of the start of path that will enable me to fulfill my vision.I personally would be happy with 150k. but i also believe it needs to be substantially more than that to achive what i and my wife (who is aust indigenous)would like to do.

      Great Lessons!
My vision is to work hard and smart to learn the process of creating passive streams of cash. Then I can duplicate until I have 200 sites. I see 10 sites as my core sites. These would be the sites I would work at as my fun job. Topics I have a passion for. My vision is to make enough money each month to pay our bills. Our current home based business has created a debt free lifestyle. My internet marketing vision is to provide enough money to live if we decided we wanted to give our business to our son. My vision is to make $10,000/mo and then have the option to duplicate the process. Short term goal – make enough to pay for health insurance which is $12,000/yr since my breast cancer. Mid term goal is to make $100,000/yr. Long term goal is to make $500,000/yr.
      Thanks for listening!

The economy and loss of a job threaten to hinder my ability to give more to charities, gospel missions, food programs etc., just when they are needing extra help.

My online business will create a large enough income so I can pour at least half the profits into individuals and organizations that are meeting the needs of people, but I will have enough for my husband and I to live on and save for retirement comfortably, while enjoying writing, speaking, and traveling when we need or want to. (I’m about to be a grandmother and want to be able to go cross country often or have a second home so we can be with our daughter, son-in-law, and new grandbaby.)

Right now I’m looking for a new job, but in my vision, I will no longer HAVE to work for others and will work flexible hours, which will give me additional time to volunteer as needs arise.

My online business will eventually offer consistently honest, no-hype (like Eric’s) information to help single parent families (or anyone else) learn to market online with integrity so that they, too, can reach a place where they have more funds to give and more time to volunteer and enjoy their families. (This development of the business needs work.)

I gave my website URL as an act of commitment to eventual online success. I’ve felt somewhat paralyzed by info overload, so right now the site is little more than a holding page while I learn, and while I work part time to develop and grow my online business.

Thanks, Eric, for your lessons. I only wish they could go faster, but that is SO selfish. I’m glad you are going at a pace that gives you time with your family.

I am a sales person since I was up on my own having to make living… This was some 30 years ago. I lived 21 years in USA and never had the opportunity to work as an engineer. I sold all kind of items and services but most of the years, I sold advertising. This online business somehow overwhelming me, I Guess what is missing is encouraging. Never mine I will get going and follow your instruction, I can do it…

Eric: May I again thank you for your powerful information…including mentioning “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale.
When I was still an on-the-air Radio and TV “personality”, I was also studying accounting at Indiana University-South Bend…PLUS on my own buying and consuming computer information….leading to programming computers, being licensed by the State of Indiana as a Public Accountant….and meeting many challenges along the way! I have worn many hats in life…..some fit better than others.
It has been my good fortune to meet the late Dr. Peale several times….and especially enjoyed having breakfast with him one-on-one in a Hotel in Dayton, Ohio in 1964. Later, Dr. Peale sent me a personal letter in which he mentioned our discussions and what a pleasure it had been to have our discussion in Dayton….instead of just a quick “handshake” greeting!. I have the framed letter among my prized possessions. Dr. Peale’s vision exuded confidence in the value of life and the abilitites of every human being. As he said,”God didn’t make any junk!”
Zig Ziglar has been another inspiration to me….and his “See You At The Top” says so much, it’s difficult to put into mere words. The human mind is SO POWERFUL that as a man named “Allen” once wrote:”As a man thinketh…..so is he”.
My visions of the future for me and our family have been on target so far…..although perhaps not at the pace I had desired.
Serious medical costs have cost us dearly and we are again living on the cusp of poverty…but with VISION unlimited, we WILL again reach the goals we seek! I wanted to be a traveling musician in the big band era….playing sax and clarinet. I DID travel with a band throughout the midwest just out of high school….. I also wanted to visit New York City on my own…..and a month before turning 16, I hitchhiked from Elkhart, Indiana to NYC..(600 miles)….and made the trip faster than the Greyhound bus schedule….I wasn’t running away from home…..I was proving (TO MYSELF) that I could do it…..and on December 21st, 1941 (at noon) I left my home…….and the next day at 1pm Eastern time…I was standing near NYC’s Holland tunnel. Two days later (Christmas eve) I was again in my home town….I had succeded in my VISION of accomplishment!
Music was still a thrill….especially with my own booking agent and money pouring in after each “gig”. I was soon studying flute…as well as sax and clarinet….and after my days in the military….I returned home to discover my high school sweetheart was no longer “attached” to the Purdue student that had “pinned” her for a couple of years. TODAY, we are only a few months from a marriage of over 62 years! Another “vision” I held throughout WWII became realty…..I worked in a music store….I assembled saxophones for the largest band instrument manufacturer in the world, C.G. Conn,Ltd. Jane worked for the Selmer Band Instrument Company. On our honeymoon……we went to New York..were interviewed on NBC’s “HONEYMOON IN NEW YORK Radio Show….and were honored to have Benny Goodman visit us at our table in the “400 CLUB”….and talk personally about out mutual interests!!!!
Then came a break….writing commercials for the local radio station….two years……while working on a correspondence course in Radio-TV Engineering at the same time….In 1950, I was named to the announcing and news staff……and when we got a permit to build a UHF TV Station….I didn’t have an FCC license…..but those that did have their “ticket” knew NOTHING about television…..so I became an Engineering Supervisor as the station was being built….and was the night Engineering Supervisor…plus VIDEO SWITCHER and Control Room Supervisor when we put the station on the air March 15, 1954 (WSJV-TV, South Bend-Elkhart, Indiana. During this time I continued radio on-the-air news and special events work. But I had further visions…..not to be a big shot and get on the coast to coast NETWORKS….but to get a job in Florida…..where I’d be warmer….and a whole lot happier…. It took 16 years to make that change…..and became the Finance Director for a community on the Florida East coast just South of Fort Lauderdale…. I never missed not being “on-the-air”…..Although I have met many famous people and rubbed shoulders with politicians from Harry Truman and Adlai Stevenson…..to Tom Dewey and hundreds of others….I have always EXTENDED my VISION of what I wanted to be…………….
Now, at age 82,…..with only Social Security….and not much else to sustain us….I again want to AIM HIGH!!!!!!!!!!
By this time next year, I expect to have several various revenue cash flows going into our bank accounts….and will close out my Accounting, Bookkeeping and Tax Preparation Corporation…..replacing the numbers tightrope with more and more “auto-responders” Selling…..Affiliating…..and Becoming Someone who retains his priority of “Helping Those Less Fortunate Than Myself” as we progress. I was honored to have been the 1998-99 Florida District 35-I Governor for Lions Clubs International and will continue to use my resources to help others. I’ve lectured, at a prominent University, to over 100 adult students working for “Doctorate Degrees in Public Administration”. Yet, I don’t have a Bachelor’s Degree!
It has been my good fortune to have been there on the scene when “opportunity met ability”. Teaching accounting at Fort Lauderdale High School to adult students has been a tremendous thrill. Many experiences didn’t put money in my pockets……but actually drained my finances….but they fulfilled my inner desires!
I’ve already worked with a couple of “Guru’s” to break into the Internet business world…..but they have left out much……the step-by-step methods have had many broken or just “missing” steps to set up…..leaving me at sea….too stubborn to make a call to get help! So far a $4,500. investment……taught me little……and the current task to set up my site to sell band and orchestra instrument on the web…..has me in debt for over $12,000…………………and my accounting income has dropped seriously as clients died or moved away….and did not get replaced by a marketing effort in that direction.

My vision NOW is to have my condo and total of $160,000. debt paid off by this time next year….plus be well on OUR way to provide well for Jane and me…..plus help our three grown children…..two of whom are struggling…PLUS…give help to the 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. BUT THE VISION would not be complete if I didn’t add that we’ll be taking some cruises….and other travels….despite my pain from 1980’s back surgeries (injury in WWII)…..the steel brace I tote on my left leg….and the pain my wife,Jane endures since just being diagnosed with at least two herniated disks in HER back.
The KEY to MAKING VISION become REALITY will be: thorough knowledge about setting up various internet avenues of revenue…..and MOST IMPORTANTLY…….the POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING!!!!!
Thanks again, Eric. You have given me additional hope for a future filled with thrills, smiles, satisfaction…..and stimulation! Sorry for venting and bragging for such a very, very long time……..

Hey Eric Thanks for this step by step lesson plan.
Vision is the one area I am strong in. My Vision for IM is an expression and integral part of my big vision which is to big to give full description here but a large part of it can be summarized as helping a huge number of people become Global Alchemists and helping coordinate their efforts. Global Alchemy is the Art and Science of becoming the change you want to see in the world and expressing it through heart inspired visionary interaction with the world. One aspect of this vision is providing the resources that people need to become Global Alchemists. I see IM as one of the main vehicles to accomplish this. I also see IM as an integral part of how to create cash flow for the vision as well as for me personally so that I can devote my time to the vision rather then on work that is not related to it just to provide life’s necessitates. I also see learning IM as an important skill in the toolbox of a Global Alchemist. Business interaction must be part of “the heart inspired visionary interactions” a Global Alchemist engages in. There are many aspects of IM that are already naturally predisposed towards what I call Alchemical Business. For example one of the intentions of Alchemical Business is to design marketing strategies that provide benefit to those exposed to it even if they choose not buy the product. IM strategies such as creating high quality content rich websites and giving genuinely useful free info products (reports mini e-courses etc) for list building are aligned with this intention.

      My Vision:
Develop a web presence that helps others accomplish their dreams through encouragement, access to personal development products that agree with God’s Word, and the demonstration of Affiliate Marketing with integrity.

Everything else falls under this. Thanks Eric for forcing me to tighten this up. I plan to immediately pull out of at least one project that doesn’t fit. It’s funny how we drop things we know when we wonder into new territory! God bless,

I am Gail Wilson and 68 years old.I am retired, have a small pension and drawing Social Security.
I am in heavy debt from credit cards, home mortgage, school loans. My main goal is to be debt free and to have money in the bank at the end of the month.
I love to bowl and am working a bowling pro shop since my retirement. It is not very profitable at this time but I intend to make it so in the upcoming months.
I would like an internet business to obtain the financial freedom, live in harmony with life without be worried about where the money is coming from. I would like to have a good health plan for myself and my family. I lost mine when I reached the age of 65 from my former employer.
My goal is to have have an income of $30,000 a month to begin with and let it grow from there until I can fully retire with no money worries.

Having this site be the best it can be and have it make money. We have a new national rss feed that made Google’s top two index search in three weeks. However, I still don’t make much.

      Jonathan,

Funny you mention computers. I’ve been in the IT/Computer field for about 28 years. From being a Field Engineer, Net/server Admin, IT Manager, Systems Engineer, Level 3 tech support, pre-sales technical support and even VP of Sales and Support I’ve seen a lot of the industry. And I’m ready to move on to something different and hopefully retire before I am 55 so I can spend more time with my 9 year old daughter and my wife. So far this looks like a good way to start. Good luck and thanks for the reply
