LESSON #13: Getting a Vision for Your Business

By | July 16, 2008

Up until this point, we’ve essentially been covering the requirements and prerequisite knowledge necessary to increase your chances of building a successful online business.

Today marks a turning point.

It’s time to begin focusing on your personal situation, and to turn our attention to your future business…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Without vision, your business probably won’t succeed.

  • I describe vision as being able to “see” a clear picture of your fulfilled goals in your mind.

  • It’s like the box cover of a difficult puzzle…

  • You must begin with the end in mind.

  • Almost every success in my life has come AFTER having a vision for it. (For example, when I won the state championship, and every time I launch a product)

  • The successful business owners that I’ve known ALL have vision.

  • It’s kind of like looking at the world from 30,000 feet. You see the big picture, and not the problems.

  • If you lose sight of your vision, you lose hope. And if you lose hope, it’s game over.

  • As we progress in the lessons, we’ll keep moving forward step by step, but if you don’t start by getting a vision, further efforts could be somewhat futile.

  • If you set your target too low, you may hit it, but there is almost no chance that you will exceed it. On the other hand, if you set your target too high, you may fail, but you will be further along than the “low” target. Therefore it’s better to set your vision higher.

  • One of the biggest things I see holding people back is a “victim mentality”.

  • “Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop this picture. Never think of yourself as failing; never doubt the reality of the mental image. That is most dangerous, for the mind always tries to complete what it pictures. So always picture ‘success’ no matter how badly things seem to be going at the moment.” – Norman Vincent Peale

  • Many of us have taken on a “just get by” mentality.

  • The size of your vision will dictate the size of the result.

  • YOU are valuable. Don’t sell yourself short.

  • Here’s my “disclaimer” that I forgot to include in the video…. “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Prov. 16:9)

    Action steps:

I want you to take a moment to tell me your vision for your business. The vision can involve other areas of your life too, but since we’re working on building your business, it should be focused on your business.

It’s important to write your vision down, so go ahead and post it in the comments below. This is YOUR vision, and there is NO wrong answer.

Focus on the big picture. Don’t worry about the details of how you will get there. We’ll worry about that stuff when we learn about goal setting and business plans, and I’ll be talking about those things in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

    Have a great day!

My vision is to be happy. To be safe. To be secure. To love my family and enjoy their love. To earn enough money to make the above happen without worry or stress.

      Hi Eric,
My goal is to have the freedom of time. Time to do what I want, when I want. To have my sites generate enough income where I’m not required to be anywhere to keep it up. Plus being able to work at my sites wherever I am in the world. The time to spend with my lovely wife. That is what my goal is.

My vision is financial freedom by way of an internet business. I want the freedom to travel the world, to one day buy a nice home, to provide comfortably for my family, to have the time I need to pursue my passions in life, rather than spending that time trapped in a 9-to-5 job I hate. My vision is to pull out of my driveway in a nice car I worked my butt off to be able to afford and afford comfortably. My vision is to never again have to worry about money, when the next paycheck might arrive, or whether or not I can cover my bills. My vision is to one day log into Paypal and see thousands of payment notices, all equalling $100,000 or more per month and over a million dollars annually. My vision is an intrepid, confident version of myself, someone with the mind of a marketer, someone who’s not afraid to fail, not afraid to take risks, and not hampered by the negativity, pessimism, and “victim mentality” to which I am so prone.

My vision is to overcome the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that lie in my way to achieving this success, so that for once in my adult life I can make my parents truly proud, and that so for once I don’t have to feel ashamed about my lot in life.

My vision is to make 2-5 million a year, help others, feed starving and under privileged children in this country and others around the world. I see myself cruising down main street on my custom built motorcycle during Bike Week and sipping coffee in the morning on my back porch as I fire up my lap top. Smiling as I look out on the horizon watching the Sun rise on the ocean.

      Eric,

My vision is to have my online business generate five hundred thousand dollars a year. To remain focused till I reach that goal. To stop looking at the shiny objects that distract me from what I want to achieve. To take action and follow through by taking one step at a time. Like so many people I was looking for the instant riches. I know I am the one that has to make it happen. I also envision giving back to others and reaching out to them in anyway I can to share my wealth and knowledge.Your program has given me a new hope and the opportunity to do it right and to make my vision come to pass. Thanks for your inspiration.

Hi Eric, Thank you for your clear & concise wisdom for internet marketing. I have had visions of my future , but most of them did not succeed and many dollars later I am feeling a deep despare. I am a 50 year old woman that is married to a 53 year old disabled husband. We are not in debt with credit and our bills are paid , but we struggle to live month to month. Which does’nt leave much for our 13 year old daughter. My vision would be tobe financially independant . IE. my husband having medine to make him well and a private tutor to teach our child to be successful in life. Our child is mentally challenged and our ” NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ” Law has left her behind . Sooooo she is in 7th grade with a 2nd grade learning ability. Iam envisioning a future that allows me to make my family healthy & smart. Thank you very much for your guidance Eric….

I want to earn $500,000 per year while working less than 40 hours a week.

The money is to settle my debts and then give most of it to people whose situation is desperate.

I’d like to support the Salvation Army, Pastor Don, Pastor Joey, a great many children.

Leave my wife with some money and my son with some money.

Eric, thank you for this invaluable lesson. I realize that every time I have started a new business or activity, I have had a vision of its completion.

My vision for my online business is that I will have the time and the resources to travel every two months to visit my sons in Lima, Peru, in Los Angeles and in San Francisco and then, to many cities and countries of the world.

I will have enough money to be able to tithe $100,000 a year to a church that is strong and efective evangelising in the Andes of Peru.

I will create a website or blog dedicated to preach to the world from the pulpit made available through internet about all sorts of ideas and thoughts I have about the truth in the bible and in other spiritual books, as well as private revelations.

I will dedicate 80% of my internet business to make money and 20% to talk about the Lord Jesus Christ.

I’ve been living in the “Just get by mentality” for far too long. I want to take my expertise in travel online and grow a successful business. I want to gross a six or seven figure income. I want to leave a personal and financial legacy for my family and grandchildren. Also to pass to others on the importance of travel and the lessons that can be learned from its experiences.

      Hi Eric,
I don’t want to earn a six figure income! My need is to just make $2000.00 per month, and even this modest goal has gone unrealized for over a year. Not from a lack of vision or persistance. But I will not give up and will refocus, thanks for the tip.

My vision is to make enough money to pay off all of my bills that is possible. I would like to take my grandchildren to disney world, I would like to do some home upgrades to my home then I want to set up funds for my grandchildren to use for life or college, 2 of the 6 are seniors in high school this year. I’m not sure if the will go to college or a trade school but I will help them if I make a lot of money or not. I want to have a nest egg retirement account so if I live as long as my 85 year old mother, and is still going, who I will help first I want to not be a financial burden on anyone. I want to be able to live independently as long as I can and be able to buy nice things (savings bonds) for my grandchildren and maybe great grandchildren some day. Without having to pinch pennies. My big goal is financial security which will give me time to help and spend quality time with my family.

My Vision is on 4 levels. First I have MS/ataxia that makes walking a challenge. I am an ex-CNA, so you can see where I’m coming from. Online @ home is perfect for me. I currently do an online “job”. The $$$ is just ok. An online biz would allow me to grow the biz that isn’t possible now. The first step is clean up the past bills, credit, buy a few small things and move back east. (50K plus taxes) The second step is to keep builing so I can cash purchase a house, furnish it like I want & buy a new car. (500K plus taxes) The third step is establish my retirement. (2mil) The 4th step is to establish a foundation 501 (c) 3 to help disabled, homeless, disenfranchised people to do what I’ve done, my paying it forward. 10% of my earnings from the beginning will fund this plus aditional capital as it becomes available with a foundation growth to at least 10 mil by 2018. My time frame is level 1 & 2 by October 2012, level 3 by September 2013, level 4 begun in September 2012 with continued growth thru 2018. I think it is important to quantify goals & write them down. This is what I think about everyday, throughout the day. I am 58 yo. Have hope, faith but above all have action!

      My Vision–
To become completely debt free within 1 year. To successfully build an online business to a positive and continous cashflow of $250,000.00 a year for first few years. And Increase this income continuously each year. To work less than 40 hours per week. Also to be able to hand down profitable businesses to my children and teach them how to be debt free and to give back to life and the betterment of mankind. Also to be able to relocate to a warmer climate and travel as often as I wish. This is my vision.

Most of the books you have mentioned I have already read and indeed Norman Vincent Peale has helped me in the way my dear wife managed to come back from deaths door three times in a recent two year period, as you say one must have a vision and believe in it and know that it is there for the taking. My vision is to make enough money to get out of debt, but mostly I have a desire to give to organizations that are helping the poor in this world, such as “Feed the Children”, different food bank organizations, religious organizations and to support our Jewish brothers and sisters in Israel. Eric I liked this lesson because of the vision we need to have and it made me think of Habbakuk 2nd chapter where God is telling Habbakuk to write his vision down on a tablet for all to see and that his vision would come to pass. I have told many people to do that very thing in faith of their answer and have seen it answered every time in the most astounding way. God will do it right every time. Thank-you for your honesty and for making this so easy for us to understand. I am praying for your health. Eric,

My name is Michael Wise, and I am interested in starting my own internet business. I do not have my own web site yet and I am leaning towards writing eBooks and possibly blogging. I have been reading about both but have no experience in either. I could possibly come up with something different since I am at the beginning stages of my thoughts. I am retired and I have the time and will to do this. I am very excited about getting started. When I first started thinking of doing this my goal was to get out of debt, generate around $10,000.00 a month in revenue, and to position myself to be able to help other people less fortunate than myself. I believe I can excel in the marketing world on the internet but I am just not sure of the correct path. I really look forward to watching your lessons each day. They are packed with good useful information. Thank you for all that you are doing.
