LESSON #13: Getting a Vision for Your Business

By | July 16, 2008

Up until this point, we’ve essentially been covering the requirements and prerequisite knowledge necessary to increase your chances of building a successful online business.

Today marks a turning point.

It’s time to begin focusing on your personal situation, and to turn our attention to your future business…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Without vision, your business probably won’t succeed.

  • I describe vision as being able to “see” a clear picture of your fulfilled goals in your mind.

  • It’s like the box cover of a difficult puzzle…

  • You must begin with the end in mind.

  • Almost every success in my life has come AFTER having a vision for it. (For example, when I won the state championship, and every time I launch a product)

  • The successful business owners that I’ve known ALL have vision.

  • It’s kind of like looking at the world from 30,000 feet. You see the big picture, and not the problems.

  • If you lose sight of your vision, you lose hope. And if you lose hope, it’s game over.

  • As we progress in the lessons, we’ll keep moving forward step by step, but if you don’t start by getting a vision, further efforts could be somewhat futile.

  • If you set your target too low, you may hit it, but there is almost no chance that you will exceed it. On the other hand, if you set your target too high, you may fail, but you will be further along than the “low” target. Therefore it’s better to set your vision higher.

  • One of the biggest things I see holding people back is a “victim mentality”.

  • “Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop this picture. Never think of yourself as failing; never doubt the reality of the mental image. That is most dangerous, for the mind always tries to complete what it pictures. So always picture ‘success’ no matter how badly things seem to be going at the moment.” – Norman Vincent Peale

  • Many of us have taken on a “just get by” mentality.

  • The size of your vision will dictate the size of the result.

  • YOU are valuable. Don’t sell yourself short.

  • Here’s my “disclaimer” that I forgot to include in the video…. “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Prov. 16:9)

    Action steps:

I want you to take a moment to tell me your vision for your business. The vision can involve other areas of your life too, but since we’re working on building your business, it should be focused on your business.

It’s important to write your vision down, so go ahead and post it in the comments below. This is YOUR vision, and there is NO wrong answer.

Focus on the big picture. Don’t worry about the details of how you will get there. We’ll worry about that stuff when we learn about goal setting and business plans, and I’ll be talking about those things in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

    Have a great day!

This is an easy question for me. My vision is, and always has been, freedom. I’m not just speaking of financial freedom (although that IS a goal). Right now, I’m just talking about the ability to live life on my terms. . .to get up when I want, to go where I want, to do what I want, to travel with my wife, and basically to live life on MY terms, not on the terms of a third party. That’s why I’m in this, and I’m going to do it.

My vision is o build an internet business that rewards me with a positive cash flow. One that I enjoy building and that I find fun in building. As I personally grow I will find great joy in giving to others needing help, encouragement and support in their struggles and needs.
My vision includes the joys of learning and developing into a man known in the community as the go to guy. Taking Action daily growing, learning and applying the teachings given to me by those who have traveled this road before me. I have much to learn mostly in the tech area. This lesson on Vision caused me to think back on my success and note the importance of vision. The internet arena is totally foreign and caused me to have difficult in once again creating the vision here. Action will cause me the to chip away with more immediate success. Thank you Eric, good advice.

I shall find the techies that I need to get the blog to replace the print advertising that brought plenty of money to my advice business, to re-establish my ruined ranch and my house that was burned down. I shall accomplish this by establishing the unique and provable system in Tarot that I discovered. I already demonstrate the system every day, and I know it has a market because when I advertised I had all the business I could stand.

My Vision is to have a very very successful online MARKETING business selling information products that include a Global Training Facility that locates other online businesses and educates people quickly to setup online businesses in their chosen professions.

My online Business would eventually take up 2 hours per week of my time. I want the online info business to make $100,000 in the next 6 months and reach $2,000,000 in 1 year and escalate expedentially after that. I want to setup a charity that would help fund a whole village/community in India for orphan children.

And then other 3rd world countries. The rest of the time will be spent travelling the global educating people from 3rd world countries on creating their own wealth. 9I don’t consider this work, but joy in helping others much less fortunate)

My future partner will also understand this vision and join me so that we can travel together.

Oh I just love this. Now this is positive, and it reminds me of something Arnold Schwarzneggar said when someone asked him if he’d ever dreamed that his life would end up so successful when he was growing up as a boy in Austria. He said, “I pained a picture in my mind and made it happen.” I love this.

I am simple. I wish only to make enough money online so that I can turn that money into good investing. In this way I will be able to weather any storm that comes in an unsure economy no matter where it is. With my investment abilities I will be able to help others learn as well in the land of my mum and dad – Italy, both Sicily and Pordenone in the northern part near Switzerland – then eventually live in Switzerland. And I see a home in Sicily and in Switzerland.

My vision is to first get out of debt and then to be able to walk away from my job and have a 1,000 per day income for the rest of my life so that I can enjoy time with family and friends without worry. This would also give me the ability to volunteer and do missions work with the churches in the area where I want to live.

My vision is to have a online business that will center around family and relationships and have multiple income streams. I believe that God is the one who gives the ability to acquire wealth and therefore I want to acknowledge that He will ultimately determine how far I go with this and I am ok with that.

I want to make enough money to enable my wife to retire from her stressful job, to become debt free, to have financial independence and be able to take vacations as a family.

I envision being able to devote more time to serving the Lord through making more time to spend with my family, through active involvement in my church and supporting missions. I will work less than forty hours a week and apply myself to developing good time management skills, and applying myself to learn and understand marketing because I see this continuing on into retirement.

      Hello Eric,
My vision is to slide out ot this world with a drink in one hand and chocolate in the other yelling….WHEE WHAT A RIDE. To do this I have been working on developing my own content for my online business for the last 2 years [it takes time to get the licenses approval from the states before you can do this legaly},with a little brake as I had some severe medical problems, so hopefully all will go smoothley now and I can get this launched in the very near future. My passion is all things hair and skin care and I have a businees plan to provide
CE hours to these salon professionals who need hours to renew their State licenses. Today there are 10 states that require these hours. In addition to the online business I am also working to develope live business seminars that will be open to all Salon Professionals. I envision my income for the first year to start out around $100.00 per day and move upwards from there to the point that I will be earning $3000.00 per day or a little over $20,000.00 a week. My vision is to help my son pay off his student loans within the next two years and set up our audio/vedio studio with all new gear. I will also travel and go to places I have marked on my world map. I am and will continue to be a advocate for green energy and community gardening and will have additional income to futher these endevors.

I am currently retired and have read many of the books you referenced already. I started as a janitor and set vision and goals for my life which ultimately led me to the highest position of superintendent.

One goal I set for myself was to run a business, but I was in the public sector for the past 34 years, I had no time to look into starting a business. I am looking forward to following your lead as you seem like a Christian who is putting people ahead of profit.
I envision a successful business making a six figure income that is fun to do and helps people in some manner. I can see happy faces using my products and bringing joy to individuals and families. I know my subconscious will keep working on this until I accomplish it.
I envision using profits for enriching my family and other less fortunate people.

My Vision is to become financially independent and secure enough to be able to own my own home again instead of renting, to replace my 13 year old van with something newer and more reliable, to afford to travel to places I’ve never been, especially on my church-sponsored missions trips, to be able give above and beyond tithing, to be financially able to afford to meet, marry and support a God-fearing woman sharing the same interests and goals in life. I want to accomplish my financial goals utilizing the knowledge and tools Eric and his team are providing me by reaching out and helping others through the power of the internet, offering ways that they too can overcome and improve their own financial shortfalls. In addition, I want to create a blog and/or website highlighting the many benefits of healthy living; to encourage, inspire, motivate, inform and educate others by sharing my own ongoing journey back to health from obesity, resulting in diabetes and high blood pressure, culminating in having a stroke. Utilizing ClickBank, Amazon, Google, etc., I will provide additional information, programs and other tools that I find useful, while also benefiting financially through being an affiliate and partner with these providers.

I retired this year, with outgo larger than income. When I started learning about IM my goal was to make enough to cover that gap. With all the other stuff I also learned that vision can change. My need has not. The money is not all of it anymore. My experiences are being added to my vision. Learning has been so fulfilling that continued learning is now part of my vision. I can see more income in my future than my need, and slowly this is becoming part of my vision.
What I consider the important primary vision is not taking vacations in the traditional sense, but enjoying the ability to vacate from work any time I need to – go shopping, watch a movie, extra sleep! Not to make excessive cash flow, but to make enough to add to my accomplishments, like setting up trust funds for the kids. Maybe not to become an expert at all I am learning, but to become respected for what I do with it and having others sometimes ask me to help them along the path.
Lifestyle! Not the extravagances and possessions, but the freedoms of time and flexible scheduling. Not the prestige of a humongous bank account, but the wonder of having enough to reward myself sometimes, and the means to help when family needs arise. If the rewards I can give myself are huge, that is great – I deserve it. I want a large library room, a good workshop and all the home I can use. For me, not for flash. Certainly not as the primary goal, but the possible result.
Primary vision: Continue learning, through my accomplishments gain respect for myself and from others, attain the freedom of time, supply my financial need and beyond that provide for others, and reach out to the dreams of the bigger things I would like for myself.
(ingredients of vision above are listed in the order of importance and the size of their part in my vision, greatest to lowest.)

      Hello Eric
My vision is to write a best seller. I already have a title for my book although it could change as I get into the business of writing it.I have also done a lot of rough copy…I look at the chaos and think this is going to take a lot of work putting it all together.I visualize myself being accepted by the big publishing house and going on tour promoting my work. Its all very exciting but the icing on the cake is when my book gets made into a movie.
Alongside writing my book I visualize myself developing software for the internet market.
I watched lesson 12 Eric…the Q was “Do you think like an Internet Marketer”? My answer to that has to be a resounding yes.
A little bit of Bio. I was a Community Developer for many years. My role was to assess the needs of organisations and individuals and families in the community, develop programs to meet their needs. To do this one had to watch global and local trends and economics and find the funds to develop these programs and be able to think outside the square and to acknowledge when the wheel does not need reinventing…that programs can be built ‘onto’ to become more effective.Does that not sound like entrepreneurship somewhat?
I am a baby boomer, the first to hit the retirement ranks and am looking forward to my new found freedom as an entrepreneur but first my house renovations have to be completed. Even then I found myself thinking like a marketer…photographing my builder working on my deck and informing him he could possibly see it on YouTube under “How to” build a deck.

I spent the first 32 years of my career in the investment industry where over a period of the first 15 years I worked very hard and in many different areas of the business with limited success. In the next 17 years I was able to achieve what many people would believe to be great success. Multimillionaire, extremely large house in a private gated community, member of a upscale golf club, 38 ft cigarette boat, etc. The cost to all of this, was that I built very successful businesses for other people at great cost to my family, friends, and myself. I was on the road 48 weeks out of the year, I ignored my young and growing family and most importantly I had lost my relationship with my savior Jesus Christ.

I lost everything I had because my pride grew bigger, along with my greed, which led me to make some poor decisions where I have lost almost everything. I lost my money, my house, my wife, my memberships, etc. Everything I valued was lost because I had replaced those values on things that were self-centered and selfish.

These past 3 years have been the worst 3 years of my life, yet the best 3 years of my life. I have rediscovered my relationship with God and the true values that I hold dear.

My vision for my business is to be able to grow my business with a passion for giving, serving, and helping others. I want to be able to deliver a product, service or both that will help people to find true happiness in their life. I want to build a successful business this time for myself knowing that I will be helping others do the same. With a complete balance of life.

A business that will deliver freedom of time, finances, emotions, and giving to others. Building hope for those who need it most.

I can see myself with my laptop on the patio of my new home in Hawaii sipping a glass of wine, eating fresh fruit and enjoying the oceanview with my girlfriend. This will be a reality in five years or sooner. I can almost feel this vision.

My online business will only require three to six hours of work a day. It will generate $20k to $30k a month delivering a product and/or service that makes peoples lives easier, (to be determined). This will allow myself and girlfriend to travel, visit friends and relatives and strengthen our relationship with each other.

I am 49 years old. I have worked a very physical job for the last 15 years and my body is breaking down. But this job has paid the bills. However I can also visualize firing my boss someday. Part-time I have created an eBay business. In the last two and a half years I have sold over $105,000 in about 2500 transactions… my vision is to also never hold a tape gun again!

Eric, your online course is by far the best tool for anyone looking to achieve financial independence and truly discover God’s plan for their lives. While I haven’t worked out the details of my vision yet, the END I have in mind is to be running my own online business side by side with my 22 year old son, providing information products that help others build their own self confidence in each area of life; like business, parenting, marriage, health, worship, etc. My goal is to create a $200k income in year 1, $500k in year 2 and grow from there with the Primary purpose of funding the growth of our church in my current role as Business Administrator. I asked God years ago what His purpose for me would be in this world, expecting Him to tell me that I would achieve some great accomplishment for Him. Instead, the message I received was that my purpose would be to educate and prepare my son to achieve that great thing for this world. To this day I do not know what that accomplishment will be, but my spirit tells me that your mentoring for us to start our own online business will play a large role in God’s plan for our lives. Thank you for instilling a passion in my heart to boldly earn a great income and be a great steward of His blessings. Your materials are nothing short of EXCELLENT !

My vision is to have enough money to retire from my factory job (I’m 66 now). I want to be free from a daily job so I can do volunteer work. (making a difference in someone else’s life would be very rewarding). I want to visit a mission field and perhaps video it to help raise awareness of it.

      Dear Eric
Thank you very much for inspiring me.
My vision is to make at least $1000 online every day. I want to help develop my community we do not have a hospital. My desire is to build one, a orphanage and a farm. Our daily food will be from this farm for the hospital, orphanage and school. I see that vision daily become a reality…thank you
