LESSON #13: Getting a Vision for Your Business

By | July 16, 2008

Up until this point, we’ve essentially been covering the requirements and prerequisite knowledge necessary to increase your chances of building a successful online business.

Today marks a turning point.

It’s time to begin focusing on your personal situation, and to turn our attention to your future business…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Without vision, your business probably won’t succeed.

  • I describe vision as being able to “see” a clear picture of your fulfilled goals in your mind.

  • It’s like the box cover of a difficult puzzle…

  • You must begin with the end in mind.

  • Almost every success in my life has come AFTER having a vision for it. (For example, when I won the state championship, and every time I launch a product)

  • The successful business owners that I’ve known ALL have vision.

  • It’s kind of like looking at the world from 30,000 feet. You see the big picture, and not the problems.

  • If you lose sight of your vision, you lose hope. And if you lose hope, it’s game over.

  • As we progress in the lessons, we’ll keep moving forward step by step, but if you don’t start by getting a vision, further efforts could be somewhat futile.

  • If you set your target too low, you may hit it, but there is almost no chance that you will exceed it. On the other hand, if you set your target too high, you may fail, but you will be further along than the “low” target. Therefore it’s better to set your vision higher.

  • One of the biggest things I see holding people back is a “victim mentality”.

  • “Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop this picture. Never think of yourself as failing; never doubt the reality of the mental image. That is most dangerous, for the mind always tries to complete what it pictures. So always picture ‘success’ no matter how badly things seem to be going at the moment.” – Norman Vincent Peale

  • Many of us have taken on a “just get by” mentality.

  • The size of your vision will dictate the size of the result.

  • YOU are valuable. Don’t sell yourself short.

  • Here’s my “disclaimer” that I forgot to include in the video…. “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Prov. 16:9)

    Action steps:

I want you to take a moment to tell me your vision for your business. The vision can involve other areas of your life too, but since we’re working on building your business, it should be focused on your business.

It’s important to write your vision down, so go ahead and post it in the comments below. This is YOUR vision, and there is NO wrong answer.

Focus on the big picture. Don’t worry about the details of how you will get there. We’ll worry about that stuff when we learn about goal setting and business plans, and I’ll be talking about those things in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

    Have a great day!

My Grandfather once told me that the definition of a successful man is a man that got up one more time than he was knocked down…..I have been knocked down sooooo many times, I am now 68 years old and my vision is not only to be a multi millionaire by the time I am 75 but to be there.

While writing our vision, how important is it to research and find a “profitable niche” first? I would like to build a business around my passion, which is End Times Prophecy and Israelites . . . but research is showing me that things like organic gardening and weight loss hold far more profit potential. This advice comes from people on the Warrior Forum (an IM forum). I imagine the example of an arts and crafts business is fine, since that’s a profitable niche. Is my vision poor for money-making? WF people say I need to make sure there are people in the market that spend money in that market first. Otherwise it may just end up being a “hobby site.” Would love input from experienced people.

The vision is not necessarily tied to your niche. It’s more the big picture of where you want to be and what you want your business and life to look like in the future. There’s a lot of bad advice in the WF. That said, I do agree that you need to make sure the niche has good profit potential before jumping into it. End Times can be a good niche, as proven by the Left Behind series, but I do think it will be fairly difficult to monetize compared to some other niches. Another niche that could be related to the End Times niche is the Survivalist/Prepper niche, which is currently pretty hot.

First I want to say I somehow ended up on a list belonging to Eric or one of his friends and purchased a product only to be dissatisfied and requested a refund. Not because of the product but because I think I misread something in their copy on their sales page.

Anyway, I liked the way they presented themselves and realized later that they were Christian’s.

Then I ran across Eric’s lesson’s and here I am about to commit to finishing these teaching’s.

The MAIN reason I want to do this is I feel like I can trust Ericand his friend’s. I’ve tried to make money online for years and always stumbled over something, usually another idea or product that promised more for less. Right now the $200 Eric mentioned is a lot but I can come up with it, slowly.

This winter makes the third winter I find myself crippled up and stuck in my lounge chair 22 hours a day living on Medicaid but very close to getting the surgery I need to walk again. I have lived these years on the verge of suicide several time’s only to turn back because of Christ and the thought of meeting Him on MY term’s scared me too much, so I dealt with the intense pain almost in tears taking extra pain meds not prescribed. What else could I do??

Here is my vision, my hope for this online business.

First is to show my wife that it is possible to make money online. She has not been supportive about this online business however she is supporting me and my 16year old daughter as best as she can. She hates her boss in a Christian way if that is possible. Working for a tyrant is the pits!

Next is to be making enough money ($4000 to $5000 a month) for my wife to quit her job and home school our daughter. Because of me she has not been able to be a Mom. Yes, my wife wants to be a house wife, a Mom, a baker, and a potter. She loves pottery and she has the equipment just not the time, time I desperately want to give her.

I also want free time to spend with my daughter. I’ve struggled with this medical problem most of her life and our time together has been tainted with the pain of my problem. A Dad is so very important to a daughter! Here is a MUST read for any Dad that has a daughter: “What A Difference A Daddy Makes” by Kevin Leaman

This may not seem like a big vision but from where I sit it seems like a miracle if it were to happen.

My wife, daughter and I want to somehow support orphanages here in the states with much more than our tithes and help to put a stop to the sex trade in some way. We don’t know any more than that. I think my wife and I to some extent have lost our ability to dream and I want it back!

Sorry to be so long winded……

My vision is to have a successful online business which is based mainly on eproducts to be offered worldwide. I will work from home and will not work more than 20 hours a week. My business will bring 1/2 Million $ per year from 1. of March 2015. I did set this goal with a friend of mine who has set the same amount as her vision in her business – who is first making 1/2 Mill / year.

I have a clear picture of my goals in a finished project. I begin with the “end in mind”. I am setting my vision…. higher. I picture myself… successful. I am a valuable asset I hold the power to success within me.

My vision is to continue to own and operate a successful online business that pulls in thousands of new customers every day. My numerous websites address the very real needs of others with very real answers that they are knocking down the virtual cyber walls to get in and buy my products. I set up the majority of my business on auto pilot which gives me time to spend with my family and loved ones. We take exciting vacations all around the world when the whim hits us. The next trip is to Mexico or South America where my kids and their significant others will join me for another “time of our lives”. We can afford to spend holidays at my “dream house” on lavish acres where I cultivate another passion of mine, beautiful gardens and fields of assorted agricultural crops that are high in demand which is another stream of income. I do give to favorite ministries that help others and am well able to be a money missionary where ever I feel the Lord’s leading, including wells for clean water, food for the hungry, clothes for the needy or the gospel for the spiritual poor. Poverty is a curse and Jesus came to set the captives free and whoever is free… is free indeed! Thank you for the very encouraging video and lesson. You are truly an inspiration.

My vision is to become debt free so that I can more closely follow the Lord’s will in my life. I can just feel that burden of debt lifting from my shoulders. I want to be able to help other people, spiritually and financially. I want to have time to volunteer, support missionaries and become a missionary myself. I do want to be able to quit my day job. I want to become a better writer/researcher while promoting other people’s products that I believe in. I believe the “sky is the limit” income wise and my goal is to be able to quit my job in a year. I’m so thankful I found the “Three Marketers”! I’m just getting started but have learned so much already! Blessings!

      Hi Eric,

Thank you for the video. I also read “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” when I was young. It was the first self improvement book I’ve ever read, and to this day it still influences how I think and act.

To add to your Norman Vincent Peale quote, my personal favorite is from Raymond Holliwell:

“Exercise discrimination of your thoughts. Give your mental life to the matters that are absolutely essential to your welfare, and the balance of your thoughts to themes of truth, beauty, and progress.”

Your story of winning the state championship is very inspiring, and is real life proof that having a vision in your life has helped you achieve an outstanding goal before. Maybe that’s one tip to add: start with small achievements to build momentum, while always keeping the big picture in mind.

Cheers (it’s my first time here)

      Hello, Eric

I will admit, my vision is that I will have a successful business. And this may sound a little weird, but I am not looking to be rich—I’m not sure anymore on what amount of money you have to be worth in order to make the claim of actually being rich—though I intend to be well-off enough to have a financially comfortable life. I am going to be a successful blogger, internet marketer, and the dealing of various types of physical products through websites and other outlets. My fiancée and I will be able to take vacations roughly every six months, as well as weekend getaways once a month….One other thing—I am going to be thinner and weigh less than what I do now at 56.

      Looking forward to more lessons.
      Thank you.

With this money I will have all I want and use the extra money to make more money so that I can travel the world helping anyone open to creating there own self-generated power from the Sun and Wind power.

I envision the use of my family’s God-given gifts and talents to become financially independent in a business that we’ve launched.
      – To see the manifestation of my current monetized website on auto-pilot actually making money from our original artwork and inspirational books.
      – To see my current book (about thirty years of continuous miracles) as a made for television movie.
      – To see my husband’s (on dialysis) illustrated books for children on the big screen – as box office hits.
      – To see our family gospel group with professional CDs and DVDs ministering to the nations.
      – To have much more money to give as tithes and offering to ministries and my favorite charitable organizations (orphans, widows, feeding and homeless shelters).

My vision statement: “To facilitate natural healing with whole organic foods and balanced nutrition.” I want to help stem the tide of obesity and other forms of dis-ease that are epidemic in this country today. My vision is to have the time, health, energy and money to do whatever I desire to do, whenever I desire to do it, for the highest and best good of all involved. I have worked as a registered nurse for a couple of years now. Before that, I was an accomplished classical musician with discipline hammered in my mind since the age of 6. I currently work with very sick and very unmotivated people. Those who are motivated to improve their lives in spite of their health problems, and learn from mistakes are my true inspiration as a nurse. In addition to the fact that I want to have more time to spend with my loved ones and travel around the world as I once used to, I want to become a super successful Internet marketer in order to help small and medium offline business owners get more online visibility and clients who would then bring more clients to these business owners with their personal recommendations. I wan people to be able to focus on what they want to do and leave the marketing part to me as I love to explore ways to make things automated and thus more affordable to the businesses so their owners can in turn spend more time with their loved ones. I want to earn at least 3 million a year and be able to donate to medical research on horrific neurologic conditions that Western medicine is currently tragically clueless how to handle. I believe that plenty of medical research money goes into the wrong pockets and there is a tremendous amount of work yet to be done when it comes to ethics in medicine. I know that in order to help fight that type of corruption, I will need some substantial money sums, and I don’t care what others may say about it, it is true, based on my experience as a nurse so far.

I have always visualized having the money to start a self-sustaining group home where my son, my husband’s son and other adults with Asperger’s Syndrome can live safely together with friends they can trust (and “houseparents”) when I am no longer here to buffer my son from the world. Having received him as God’s greatest gift nearly 22 years ago, without an instruction manual, I was given the opportunity to learn many things about human nature that I really never wished to know, particularly from his teachers (tried to punish him into fitting into a round hole, using physical [really!] and psychological abuse, stripping him of his self confidence and bruising him physically [yes, actual physical bruises] at too early an age for him to understand that this was wrong and that he should tell me what was happening.) Both my son and my stepson are extremely intelligent and creative, but without the social skills to not be a victim of unscrupulous or simply ignorant people.

In addition to the group home for “socially inept people”, I want to fulfill my childhood dream of having an infinitely large no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary to create safety and love for all those (currently) unwanted and abused animals (domesticated and exotic) to live out their lives.

I have more recently visualized being able to start programs to subsidize organic farming methods to help farmers who want to farm organically, but don’t have the money to begin and to bring organic food choices to more people for prices they can afford, plus create a more sustainable agricultural model for us all.

I visualize being a debt-free billionaire, but have little need for opulent lifestyles or world travel, just to support my family and live quietly. In other words, I envision myself as having the resources of a one-percenter, but using the money to create a better world in a small way rather than feeling the need to live the conspicuous consumption lifestyle of most of the one-percenters.

My Vision is to have a wildly successful internet based info product/book/program called Iron Core Style that will be embraced by everyone who comes into contact with it. It will be bigger than Yoga and will reposition martial arts as an accessible practice for health and strength. Iron Core Style will effectively change the course of history by educating and enabling people to exist fully in their breathing bodies and in turn, in their most supreme spirituality (i.e In the image of the Creator). I will have retreat centers in exotic/volcanic locales and will build lava rock igloo domains and dharma halls along with fully sustainable permaculture ecosystems. And I’ll become healthy, wealthy and wise because of it. I will be a Six Million Dollar Man before I’m 60 but also every year after.

My vision is to inspire and encourage people to recognize their amazing potential and gifts. It is also to help them to realize how to use those gifts to benefit others as well as themselves. I have come to realize that the way I can accomplish this is by sharing/promoting some of the resources that I have found along my journey; the people, products and services that have helped me to clarify what possibilities there are and then to set out to create an income doing what I LOVE! I especially want to inspire and encourage my own children, 3 grown sons, to follow their talents and live lives of meaning and purpose; not to exist following the 40/40 plan – 40 hours a week for 40 years (or more). I want to be an example to them of greater possibility, you know, if I can do it, they can too….

        My vision

This is by financing food and school and training projects on an on going basis. My vision is to earn over $40000 monthly to travel the world to meet and share with my brothers and sister in other parts of the globe. This is a vision, not a comment- I did not see any place for a vision. Better something than nothing ! I have read all these visions. In addition to Lesson 13, they are very inspiring. Most have the incredible advantage of youth !
One point of contradiction _ You (Eric), described the vision as being independent of financial considerations etc, then you later agreed with someone else that they should allow their cache’s suitability to influence their vision !
My vision is to have plenty of money to (initially) re-unite a separated family, by being able to provide suitable accommodation ( for 5 dependent children. After they are taken care of, & looking toward higher financing ability in future, I seek to help an astonishing HIV charity. Two nations seem highly favored by Mother Nature: The Thais & the Lebanese. Both have a large majority of beautiful people. There is a Thai TV film made at an HIV charitable clinic (if clinic is the right word for 500 inmates) in which the patients, particularly the small children (who were born HIV +ive) are so innocent & beautiful, that it brings tears to your eyes. The organization has no official funding, & so depends on financing by private donors. Of course there is never really enough money, so it is my vision to be able to help., in spite of not being “Positive” myself (Thank God). I’m taking Eric by his word : If you are going to have a Vision, it should be a large one, not a Mini. You should seek to help as many people as possible, & help them as much as possible (plenty of scope here ! )

My vision is to end this journey with the successful launch of an online business promoting books, videos, cds and content that helps teach, motivate and empower new agents who are learning to sell Final Expense insurance. This is a business with simple, proven processes and procedures but also with difficulties built in that must be addressed and overcome on a daily basis. The main obstacle is the mundane tasks that make up the majority of the daily routine, and teaching agents to “get out of your own way” is the main challenge. Mastering the mundane is the path to great success (and great income) in this challenging field. My site will become the biggest and most successful “go-to” resource for Final Expense agents across the United States.

My vision is to make a million in 3 years or less. This would allow me to pay off me debts, including my mortgage, I an sick and tired of being a “slave to my debtors.” What a relief that would be when I can yell with excitement in the words of Martin Luther King, “free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, I am free at last.” I can then concentrate on giving back, showing others “how to fish,” travel, gardening and fishing.

Free to live and do as I want, without having to consider whether or not I can afford it. Freedom to help myself and my family, and freedom to help the less fortunate among us. Freedom to turn my wants into satisfied needs. Time freedom to be able to do all the things that show up on my “bucket list” as time goes by. Freedom to live a richly fulfilled life.

Once they are on their own, my wife and I will have sufficient means to serve missions without worrying about where our next meal will come from.

Do good while doing well on the basis of managing, popularizing and monetizing a successful discussion website on personal and social development. Quit ½ day-job in six months, quit other ½ in a year.

Hi Eric, Thanks for the tips so far.. I’m really looking forward t the next steps.

My vision is to build a very successful online business that build on my capabilities as a facilitator and learning and development consultant. I will be the go to person for learning solutions for a myriad of industries. I want to do less of the work in the long run and empower others to deliver the messages of my products and services. I will make over A$500,000 per year and spend at least 30% of my time doing good works either in Australia or in underdeveloped countries. I will holiday with Deb for one month each year exploring Australia and the countries we are yet to visit.

My vision is that I am running a very successful affiliate marketing business. This business makes me over a quarter of a million dollars per year. I drive a top of the range Audi8 and live in a home worth a million dollars paid for in cash. I work less than 40 hours per week and can go and play golf wherever and whenever I want. I am in good health and have shed the excess weight that I have carried for too many years. I share all of this with my wife, with whom my relationship has never been better.

I’ve already started work and my vision is to establish a stable and lasting successful business, which will provide me with financial freedom and pave the way for my daughter, who shows an interest in design and Internet technology.

      Hi Eric,
Well, here I am at 68 years old, I was pretty well off when my wife passed on in 2004, however I blew it. Now my vision is to have a successful business centered around IM and WordPress, working at home or wherever I may be with my laptop, while working less than 40 hours a week (actually a lot less). I don’t have to answer to anyone except myself and my clients. I hope to help others get what they want and need by showing them that they don’t have to punch a clock all their lives like I did. By doing this I can fulfill my dreams of maybe having a big beautiful house with a pool and a nice office for when I’m home, (I’d like to have about three monitors set up to my computer). I also would like to be driving a Bentley, go on trips whenever with out worrying about running out of money, which I know can happen if your not careful.

My vision is to make enough income so I go back to traveling to foreign countries, when I want anytime I want.
To pay off my newly acquired home and become debt free within the next 30 to 45 days. To never have to go back to a desk job. Currently I put in 10-12 hours a day at home trying to make this work and am not giving up. IT WILL WORK! even at my age of 61.

My vision for my future is to learn how to be successful with online businesses. I want my online endeavors to be so successful so my husband could retire and join me in this venture. We would make money online so we could go or be anywhere in the world and still be making a great living. I have always dreamed of traveling with my husband and enjoying other cultures. A million dollars a year would be great.

My vision for my business is to help thousands of people to become physically and spiritually well by developing online materials focused on nutrition and health. I plan to work more or less full time, yet take regular vacations with my family. I envision receiving income in my various accounts as a result of automated sales of my materials, and also receiving many requests for live appearances. I plan to speak regularly to large audiences, sharing a message of truth and wellness as I develop cutting edge materials. I plan to be very generous, giving to my church, my Compassion children, other places I feel led, and of course, to my family!

      Eric, many thanks!

You know I tried following this course back in 2010, but at that time I had such low self esteem I quit after lesson 21. However I did take notes and I was reading through them the other day after buying ‘The Fitness Firesale’ Health Program. But since 2010 my self esteem has improved and so I decided to start this course again.
My vision is to be able to:
      1. Not worry about not being able to afford something
      2. To include many other brilliant Internet Marketers into my circle of friends
      3. To be able to give back, by helping other people learn what I have learned and to be able to give the gift of freedom to less fortunate people
      4. And what’s more, I really need a decent suit 🙂 he he he

Thanks Eric, it is nice to know someone out there is genuine, honest and cares about the people who find it difficult to break into Sales & Marketing 🙂

      Kind Regards,

      Conrad

My vision is to have a successful online information marketing and affiliate business centered on my desire to provide useful, informative and actionable health and wellness information and products to people. I will live in a comfortable open floor plan rambler/ranch type house with acreage that is paid for, and drive a paid-off Audi A-8 (all wheel drive). The income will be at least $1 million per year to allow me to: retire in 2 years from the military with enough income to replace my active duty income AND pay for private school for my niece and lifelong care for my other severely disabled niece, assemble a $2 million nest egg AND give an increasing percentage of profits (with goal of 90%) to the Lord to bring people into the kingdom of heaven and disciple them into mature children of God.

In addition I will establish, fund and run a multi-acre sanctuary for abandoned cats where they can roam safely, eat, and get veterinary care while they live out their natural lives.
