LESSON #13: Getting a Vision for Your Business

By | July 16, 2008

Up until this point, we’ve essentially been covering the requirements and prerequisite knowledge necessary to increase your chances of building a successful online business.

Today marks a turning point.

It’s time to begin focusing on your personal situation, and to turn our attention to your future business…

Main points:

  • Without vision, your business probably won’t succeed.

  • I describe vision as being able to “see” a clear picture of your fulfilled goals in your mind.

  • It’s like the box cover of a difficult puzzle…

  • You must begin with the end in mind.

  • Almost every success in my life has come AFTER having a vision for it. (For example, when I won the state championship, and every time I launch a product)

  • The successful business owners that I’ve known ALL have vision.

  • It’s kind of like looking at the world from 30,000 feet. You see the big picture, and not the problems.

  • If you lose sight of your vision, you lose hope. And if you lose hope, it’s game over.

  • As we progress in the lessons, we’ll keep moving forward step by step, but if you don’t start by getting a vision, further efforts could be somewhat futile.

  • If you set your target too low, you may hit it, but there is almost no chance that you will exceed it. On the other hand, if you set your target too high, you may fail, but you will be further along than the “low” target. Therefore it’s better to set your vision higher.

  • One of the biggest things I see holding people back is a “victim mentality”.

  • “Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop this picture. Never think of yourself as failing; never doubt the reality of the mental image. That is most dangerous, for the mind always tries to complete what it pictures. So always picture ‘success’ no matter how badly things seem to be going at the moment.” – Norman Vincent Peale

  • Many of us have taken on a “just get by” mentality.

  • The size of your vision will dictate the size of the result.

  • YOU are valuable. Don’t sell yourself short.

  • Here’s my “disclaimer” that I forgot to include in the video…. “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Prov. 16:9)

    Action steps:

I want you to take a moment to tell me your vision for your business. The vision can involve other areas of your life too, but since we’re working on building your business, it should be focused on your business.

It’s important to write your vision down, so go ahead and post it in the comments below. This is YOUR vision, and there is NO wrong answer.

Focus on the big picture. Don’t worry about the details of how you will get there. We’ll worry about that stuff when we learn about goal setting and business plans, and I’ll be talking about those things in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

    Have a great day!

      Hi Eric,
Thank you for being such a great help and more than that, for being a man of God whom we feel we can trust and learn from.
My husband (Bob,age 70) and I (age 67) are studying your materials. I have recently quit my JOB and when Bob quits his JOB, we already have a comfortable retirement worked out; however, we desire to make enough money so we can have a “more than comfortable” retirement plus be a financial blessing to our family (five children and 13 grandchildren) and to be a blessing to our church and church family above and beyond our tithe.
Our vision is to have an online business income of $25,000+ per month. Our strategy is to first always pray and follow the wisdom which God so freely gives and to faithfully follow your lesson guidelines and decide exactly what type of online business to pursue. We believe we will reach and go beyond our goals.

May the Lord bless you and keep you and make His face to shine upon you.

My vision and mission remains as it has been the last 50 years, to change the present civilisation and make it more ethical and humane through individuals expressing their own complete inner freedom. I need to provide adequate resources to fund this major change in society, but above all to prove to everyone that I truly am master of my own destiny. This will involve extensive worldwide travel and every last breath I take.

      Vision:
I am writing the articles for my websites and products sitting on the deck of my mountain cottage, steaming cup of coffee at hand, just in view of my art studio which is a short walk down a path. There are garden rooms that surround the property which is located in a community of artists and creative individuals.
The streams of passive income I receive are only surpassed in gratitude by the appreciation I have for being able to help so many with my arts and healing manuals and workshops. I am thrilled to be able to make a difference with people who are looking for a more authentic path and also with groups of mentally and physically challenged children and adults.
      My cup runneth over.

My big picture is to be debt free by end of 2008. By 2009 I have enough money to travel, continue my scuba diving, climb mountains (Everest!!!!) , to help my family back home, start off a business that my supposedly retired but still working Dad could handle without much stress, buy my apartment & build my family village home which consist of five big rooms & big big yard. My other vision for this coming months is going back home for my two best friends wedding; in which I have to do some good photo & videoshoot thus having a good camcorder & camera to start with. Not forgetting the gifts that I’m buying for them & for my families. The family home needs a new PC.

      Eric,

I got started late, so I am taking on these lessons 3 at a clip, until I catch up.

My vision is to be able to travel freely in the world without having to worry about income limitations. Writing and teaching. Just being able to help those I meet solve a difficult problem; Being able to assist a charity I have an affinity with–both with my time and financially; having a residence on 3 continents…

These are just a few of the goals I’d like to reach.

To do this, I will need a significant residual income. The bar will be raised as needed, so I have set no income limits in my mind.

I see as I write this, that Keenan also pretty much summed up a similar vision, and it looks like we are all in very select company!

      Hey Eric,
I just want to say hello before we get started. You’ve been the subject of many conversations here at the Malone house, but we’ve never actually “spoken”.

      So… Hello.

      First some mini visions.

Catch up on the lessons by weeks end.

Overcome my trepidation about this new direction for the lives of myself and my family. I have been on FML(family medical leave) since June 23rd. My wife and I decided I should take this time to help her care for our five children while they were home from school for summer break. She has been diagnosed with Lupus recently and chasing around five rugrats and caring for our home loomed as too much for her to handle alone. I am in the 13th year working for the same company, which is longer than I have worked for anyone ever in my life other than myself. Due to the success of Sabrina’s site workingmom.com we find ourselves in the unique position of having the opportunity to decide whether or not I will even return to my job when my leave is scheduled to end on September 1st. We have had many conversations and have put this decision to much prayer. Suffice it to say though that I can be a creature of habit and change does not come easily to me at first. Be that as it may, the point of this mini vision is that if I close my eyes and picture the next month in my mind, I don’t see it ending with me returning to the job that I have long since left in spirit and have been successfully functioning in under autopilot for years.

Now for the longterm. My vision is to become the best Husband and Father that I can be. To accomplish this I feel that the more time I can spend growing my relationship with my wonderful wife and the more time I can spend raising and nurturing the five gifts from GOD that are my children, the more successful I will be. I will use my very varied and unique life experiences to develop websites that will offer people products, information and services which will help them with their everyday needs while hopefully helping them gain the blessings and opportunities that I gave been given.

Some of the ideas that I have as far as offerings are in areas as basic as “how to” (my many years in the home improvement field and retail sales would translate here) all the way up to maintenance free and energy efficient , self sufficient homes. I also have some ideas for people who need help getting organized, but more importantly, staying organized and being able to do more of the things that can help you to be happy and successful.

By the end of our first year we will have monthly gross revenues in excess of $25,000 monthly, growing to $100,000 monthly by the end of year 2.

Eric, thank you for being a good friend to Sabrina, and thank you for Eric’s Tips. Let’s get to work!!!

      Talk to you soon,
      Big Dan

      Hey Eric!
Thank you for all the video’s and help. I’ve recently got into the online business because I hurt my back and several doctors can not figure out what exactly is wrong with it. But I haven’t been working for a couple of months, so no income. I have a wife and a beautiful daughter. I’ve been thinking about working online for a long time, but never had the time. So now that I have the time I’m really want this to work so I can spend more time with my family, take them on vacations. Hopefully one day my wife can quit her job. I want to buy her a ranch home so she can get horses to ridc, just like when she was little. My wife and I would love to have more kids. I want to be able to put them through college. That’s my vision. Nice family life. Thanks again for all the help!

      Hello Eric,
Thanks for the way you teach. You are easy to follow. My vision in a very short form is simply… to have numerous web sites Adsense and Affiliate types. Informative sites in many different niches such as health; green site; just to name a couple. I will also help my close friends and family in this area as well.
I will have two homes, one up here in the north which is home and one down south where it is warm. If $500 thousand is where I get to I will be happy but I plan on much more than that.

My vision is to become financially free. I am just learning what internet marketing is and my goal with this venue to make enough money not to need to be based out of any one area. 30K/month after taxes. Recently I have had health issues which will not allow me to spend years physically practicing my profession as I had planned. But, as an expert in my field, I envision being able to inform individuals about this field so they came understand their choices better, be their own advocate when deciding on who should treat them, and what to expect from someone who knows what they are doing – to connect with people who leave an office not understanding what happened during their appointment. I believe this service will be great for both sides of the fence patients, and doctors. Perhaps some product opportunities will present themselves, I am already beginnig to think of a couple. I hope to begin this business or any business I start, with little cash up front, and using what I have. I would like to pull in enough income to purchase income generating real estate, and to have the tax advantage of a C corporation. When possible, I will purchase some lovely land and place a yurt, then “green house” on it for myself. I will travel and live in these areas for short periods of time, getting to know the people and learning what would improve their lives. I’d like to learn how they deal with my area of knowledge, whether it be scientific or folk medicine and bring this interesting information to the website. I’m also developing an offline business, which I will eventually sell at the right time. Thank you for going slow and reinforcing how important it is to build the foundation. The vision, and seeing the end, being the end in essence before we start it seems has been the single common link of all successful business ventures. I look forward to all that I will learn from you. Cynthia

      Hi, Eric and others –

My vision is pretty simple, I think. I have a picture in my head of my wife and I working quietly together, paying bills without stressing out and enjoying a top credit rating. I see my sons wearing decent clothes and getting a regular (reasonable!) allowance. I see us contributing to worthy ministries and buying needed items for the ministries in which we’re already involved. I see us driving back and forth to church and other places in nice vehicles. I’ve sometimes thought about an extravagant lifestyle, but the REAL me just wants a secure and quiet existence. I see us taking a yearly vacation and showing our sons all of the beautiful places that can be seen.

My goals aren’t all that complicated either. In the short-term, I would like to generate a second income that will free us to run our Child Daycare without financial concerns. In the long-term, I’d like to pay us out of debt and buy the property we’re on or else buy another, nicer property. I want to accomplish these goals legally and ethically, and I want to be able to teach others the same thing.

My vision is to pay off our debts and be able to support my family and be able to travel. I only desire to meet our needs and if there is more than income generated than what we need then it is my desire to support several ministries and missionaries I am involved with as well as be able to spend more time in the home bound mission field.

I love the internet and already make my living working as a self employed web designer. I would like to supplement my income so that even when I am away from my office I am still generating an income.

My goal is to develope several social network sites revolving around areas of interests I have to reach very specific audiences that are passionate about these areas of interest. One example is that my wife and I are Disney World vacationers and we know most everything you need to know to vacation there and save money. I would like it to be a community that I could market to as well as advertise to. I would like to explore as many areas of internet marketing that will continue to build on.

Fast forward.. I joined the lesson and was impressed that none before ERIC HOLMLUND has said anything on BASIC ELEMENTS needed to fire up a biz online.

YOU are the first teacher to ask me write my vision on your webspace when others are reeling to their products.

I have no doubt that I can’t take the success route with you at the end of the 100 lesson.

      Vision (10,000feet)
      – I’ll be doing it no matter what it takes to work myself to be a successful Netpreneur with a networth of USD250,000 yearly

      – To be financially independent

      – I envision to pass these successful bizs that I farmed to my legacy and so on…

      – As a student of Erictips, I will provide my own lessons and experiences to help out the millions of burn-out newbies out there.

The vision is to own a well-established gaming website of which 50% of European gamers have used and 90% of active gamers (European) have heard of. It will be the catalyst in re-revolutionising the industry and be the port through which 20% of online gaming is generated providing me more than a £5 million yearly income. The success will stimulate leaders in the market to forge greater partnerships with us granting us a greater negotiation tool. The popularity of the site will allow me more freedom to research ways to develop it further while being able to devote more time to other projects (on and off-line).

My vision for my business is that I am able to leave working in corporate America no later than June 14, 2012.

I will do this through info product and affiliate marketing and by earning $1 million (minimum) in gross sales and a consistent $20K per month in a manner that I can partially automate/outsource. Over time, I will add freelance copywriting to the mix, especially nonprofit fundraising and grantwriting.

As I want to build the capacity for a “location independent” lifestyle, I will emphasize building a flexible business that I can do anywhere and that doesn’t depend on my continual presence.

I also intend to earn enough to apply for New Zealand residency through investor status (currently requires $2 million NZ$ to invest in NZ) and to set up a music scholarship fund at the Univ. of Denver in memory of an aunt who helped me afford college (she never attended college, but would have majored in music if she could have. Instead, she helped me attend DU.)

Wow, I thought I was reading what I was going to write. The only difference is that I cannot “vision” the million dollars a year gig. Maybe I do need to shoot for it and like Eric says I’ll get closer to it than shooting low. I actually have a house on 4.5 acres that I could park my RV, it would be nice to have a place to call home. Maybe our paths will cross on the road!

My vision is to have financial freedom. To have a successful online business that I have a passion for and can work from anywhere in the world, in addition to generating an income of $1,000,000 per year. To have invested wisely so I may take extended amounts of time to travel with my family. In 5 years, I need to stop working hands on with my patients due to the physical demands. However, I do want to continue to stay connected to my profession and provide a service to all people. I would like to contribute 10% of my income and my time to a ministry that is close to my heart. Feel carefree enough to enjoy my friends, family and the world that surrounds me.

As for my vision, I cannot separate my life and business visions, because I think they are 2 pieces in the same puzzle!
My vision is to create an entity that not only provides a steady, escalating, and recurring income for me and my family now, but also creates a sustainable residual income for the financial security for my daughter and future generations to come.
I look to My vision as a legacy generator that will most certainly provide wealth for my descendants, but will also (just as importantly) help support religious and social service.
**I intentionally did not include a dollar amount as I think this will limit my thinking and planning.

Thank you, Eric, again for your wisdom.

For me I’ve been here online for awhile no success to speak of YET!

I vision my web design business to be the best out there, it will hve membership attached to it. I want to help others (beginners espeically) get their prescense known online as soon as possible. I love to teach people how to do thinhgs the right way. I want to be making at lease $1 million/yearly. /This will help my son with his disabilities and his dreams of becoming a reptile breeder, specificly bearded dragons. I want to live debt free and be able to put away for colleges and retirement. Enough income to help fammily and friends achieve their goals.

I love building websites, simple easy systems, nt all that fancy stuff. I have lots of dreams of what I want to do but main focus and vision is to help others get online with their websites/blogs

Money is one thing for success, but I also enjoy just as much the satisfaction of helping someone see the light, as when they get excited at seeing their website up, or getting that first check from their website, that is worth than money!

But I am so far in debt my goal is to be able to make at least $1 million/year!

Thanks for this opportunity Eric to share, all the above visions are fantastic keep it up

Especially hunting, fishing, retriever training, adventure and the environment. My business will be home based and set up so I can take it on the road in pursuit of the passions mentioned. I want the income from my business to be over 500,000 per year. Hi!

Great visions to be read here, and positive thinking is always good to hear/read!

My vision is to spend the free time I have actually to continue building this network of websites, eventually generating enough income to supplement my next job as an IT project manager, which will replace the 17 past years of programming jobs I’m definitely bored with.

And finally, completely fed up with IT 😉 I shall put enough cash aside, like 1.5M$-2M$.
This will help me to build my next business, the aquaponic farm of my dreams, providing fish and veggies that I’ll be happy to sell on the local markets.

I’ll get another wealthy couple of years in order to achieve this, and I thank God to keep me in the same good health as before. If not even better 🙂

Thanks for the videos, Eric. I just bought the ‘Sales for Dummies’ book, will help me to start becoming a salesperson. My turn to sell!!

Greetings Eric. My vision is to be free and live my life on my terms, not my employers’. That means being financially self-sustaining, so that I may spend more time with my wife, building a family without having to worry about my income flow.
In short, I envision breaking away from the rat race and the rat race crowd. I’ve already broken away from the race race mentality. So that’s one down, 2 more to go.

My vision is to create a business that helps people to be free from the challenges of health, prosperity, relationships and self expression by discovering God given principles that reveal their right to a purposeful and satisfying life. My information helps them to gain a sense of control in their lives and i can provide them help along the way.

I find a way to attract millions of people seeking long term fulfillment and sell my information for a small sum to create the millions of dollars annually that allow me to return return to my homeland and provide better education to poor children, put boots on their feet in winter, create industry, opportunity and incomes for the families and much, much more!

This brings me ultimate satisfaction in life and allows me to live in the place that I love and surrounded by the folk I care about.

It is also my vision to finance gospel activities such as church development projects and to cater for the welfare of full-time ministers of the gospel.
And i wish to finance these visions from the proceeds of my successful business. It will come to pass in Jesus name,Amen.

My vision is to be financially free. I want to have passive incomes from my successful online businesses that will support my family and that will allow me to travel around the world with my family. Eventually, I also want to invest in real estates and stocks. Ultimately, my greatest goal is to put a foundation that will cater to street children here in my country.

Me and my fiancee have put ourselves on a 5-year Plan which we are beginning to implement by the end of this Year to be financially independant by the end of the 5 years. We’re starting with a few easy, quick-start ideas to push us into multiple streams of income, using some re-sell items as well as items we create upon our own (I’m a writer and also look forward to what you have to say about getting others to write your content)then next Spring I plan to open a few online streams of income/sites that focus on certain niche areas that (unfortunately) are already out there…but I strongly believe that I will “stomp” the Competition. We have solid plans to take a majority of our profits and invest in real estate onnce we have cleared our debt and put away a set stipend each year from all profits for our retirement. We’re taking this step by step and being realistic, using affiliates and viral marketing to get going, and understanding that we cannot leaves our “day jobs” until we can at least match what we make out in the real world. Hence the 5-year plan. Slow, easy, rationally, put our love and our efforts (and much of our spare time) into our Dreams.

My vision is to have a successful online business that allows me to earn at least 1 million per year (not sure what I want to sell), quit my job and work from home no more than 38 hours per week, have a holiday each year with my family, buy a house and a new car, have money put aside for the children’s education and to be able to support the charities of my choice.

      Hi Eric:

My goal is to retire in luxury. I want to travel worldwide, and I would like to have my dreamhouse. I also want to establish trust funds for my children. I have a monetary goal of $100,00 to be made within 6 mos. And I intend to increase my goals every 6 months thereafter.

My vision is to build a business around my passions for family health and the environment. I have an idea for a information website and online store for non-toxic living. I’m not entirely sure how this will translate into a sizable income yet (apart from the store) but I’m sure I will learn all about multiple income streams that I can apply to this business. Financially, I would like to be earning a minimum of $100,000/year within two years and $1,000,000/year as an ultimate goal (I don’t have a realistic time frame for that yet- maybe 10 years? Hopefully less!). I would like to be able to work no more than 20 hrs per week, so that I still have lots of time for my two year old son. My income will also enable my husband to work fewer hours at his business (IT Consultant), so we can do some travelling and enjoy more family time. We will be able to upgrade from our townhouse to a home with some property and be mortgage free. I would like to help my brother’s family buy a house and relieve some debt burdens of other family and friends.

My vision is to build a successful online business that will allow me to retire in ten years and spend the following year cruising around the world with my girlfriend. The business will be successful enough to provide economic security for myself for the rest of my life and leave economic security for my daughter.

My vision is to create an online marketing business which will allow me to spend more quality time with my two children. I will incorporate my passion for the remodeling industry, specifically kitchen and bath remodeling, to generate $50,000/mth of business. My success will allow me the opportunity to give more back to this great planet and its people than I receive.

My vision is to publish a book which includes all of the spiritual decendants of Abraham. This would include Moses, the prophet of the Jews, Christ, the prophet of the Christians, and Muhammad, the prophet of the Muslims. The book is called Holy Trilogy, the basis of a story I wrote, and this should sell well enough to finance the publication of a subsequent book similarly attempting to reconcile all religion. Finally, I would like to write and sell a book about evidence, proof, theory and fact, faith and belief which would help to more reasonably establish priorities and directive in religion, science, art, trade and policy, among other things.

Hi, Eric. My vision is to have an automated publishing business providing downloadable products focusing on my expertise in relationship coaching that will bring me in $500,000 a year. I will spend a number of hours a week writing eBooks, since I enjoy the writing act. My goal is to show people how they can experience loving and fulfilling relationships with a wide variety of people, even in the work situation. I see myself giving presentations and also training new coaches as the information business grows.
Can’t wait for the next few lessons!

      Eric,
My vision is to have a successful, God centered, online business tailored around my passion for religion. I want to create multiple streams of income and I will work from my home office so that I can spend quality time with my family doing the things that we love to do. I will work less than 40 hours a week and my business will bring in $1 million a year. I will give to charity as I have always wanted to do and I will be a missionary, here and abroad, for the Lord.
