LESSON #13: Getting a Vision for Your Business

By | July 16, 2008

Up until this point, we’ve essentially been covering the requirements and prerequisite knowledge necessary to increase your chances of building a successful online business.

Today marks a turning point.

It’s time to begin focusing on your personal situation, and to turn our attention to your future business…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Without vision, your business probably won’t succeed.

  • I describe vision as being able to “see” a clear picture of your fulfilled goals in your mind.

  • It’s like the box cover of a difficult puzzle…

  • You must begin with the end in mind.

  • Almost every success in my life has come AFTER having a vision for it. (For example, when I won the state championship, and every time I launch a product)

  • The successful business owners that I’ve known ALL have vision.

  • It’s kind of like looking at the world from 30,000 feet. You see the big picture, and not the problems.

  • If you lose sight of your vision, you lose hope. And if you lose hope, it’s game over.

  • As we progress in the lessons, we’ll keep moving forward step by step, but if you don’t start by getting a vision, further efforts could be somewhat futile.

  • If you set your target too low, you may hit it, but there is almost no chance that you will exceed it. On the other hand, if you set your target too high, you may fail, but you will be further along than the “low” target. Therefore it’s better to set your vision higher.

  • One of the biggest things I see holding people back is a “victim mentality”.

  • “Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop this picture. Never think of yourself as failing; never doubt the reality of the mental image. That is most dangerous, for the mind always tries to complete what it pictures. So always picture ‘success’ no matter how badly things seem to be going at the moment.” – Norman Vincent Peale

  • Many of us have taken on a “just get by” mentality.

  • The size of your vision will dictate the size of the result.

  • YOU are valuable. Don’t sell yourself short.

  • Here’s my “disclaimer” that I forgot to include in the video…. “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Prov. 16:9)

    Action steps:

I want you to take a moment to tell me your vision for your business. The vision can involve other areas of your life too, but since we’re working on building your business, it should be focused on your business.

It’s important to write your vision down, so go ahead and post it in the comments below. This is YOUR vision, and there is NO wrong answer.

Focus on the big picture. Don’t worry about the details of how you will get there. We’ll worry about that stuff when we learn about goal setting and business plans, and I’ll be talking about those things in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

    Have a great day!

      Hi Eric

Would like to say thank you for your lessons once again they really are what is needed for me to move forward and start moving towards my vision. My vision is to be financially successful in an area of internet marketing that is close to my heart. With this success I will be able to start to live other areas of my life in the way i wish travelling and investing time in projects that are not for financial gain but for personal fullfilment. A very important part of my vision is to provide a stable future for my son and alleviate stresses associated with a lack of financial security. I am on my way towards the vision and goals.

      Hi Eric,

Before sharing my vision, I would just like to say that I am “blown away” by what you have to say and how you say it in Eric’s Tips! You are so “down to earth” and “easy to listen to”. What “gems” of knowledge you have shared thus far. I keep pinching myself as it is hard to believe this is all FREE! Thank you!
Ok, my business vision! I am 54 and would love to be able to quit my current job in the next couple of years, to “travel the world”, enjoy more quality family time, increase my monetary commitments to charities, church, and our community, help out our 4 kids with post secondary education and in general feel great about life and helping others to realize their vision. All this with my 6-figure income from Internet Marketing!!!

I’d like to generate an income of at least several thousand dollars a year, possibly through information products and products dealing with people’s pets. This would replace my income and my wife could stop working. What I see in my vision is a work environment which is somewhat challenging, but also fun, which could take up the better part of my day but from which I could also take a break.

My vision is to have a business that is based in health and well-being. I would love to involve all aspects of this in my online business. A healthy lifestyle and enlightened thinking is the vision of my business. It will involve using the environment wisely, eating to maintain health, being an educated consumer, exercising and of course education for living an enlightened life. My goal is to make 1 million dollars my first year and quit my “day” job. This will enable me to be home more for my kids and husband. I will also volunteer my time and money to the organizations that enrich my life and that of others. I will become more involved in my community and work to make it a better place to thrive in life. As my business grows, I will share my knowledge and business with those I care for. It will be so nice to be a positive influence on so many people. I will cherish the fact that I have built a community of people who share the same ideas and views fro a better world. I will truly love the life and career I have made for myself.

Eric, thankyou! This is a timely and welcome step by step mentoring for a scared newbie. I am self employed in the classical music industry and it is my vision to earn upwards of $300,000/year with affiliate marketing and info products working 20-30 hours/week so that I am free to pursue, from home and close to my family, occasional specific musical projects which are dear to me. Consequently, my wife wife will then be free to leave her day job and pursue her healing work at home. We have a 13 year old daughter and three of us are very keen to travel extensively.

      Eric, I think I love you….

No, I’m not hitting on you. I just had to share this with you after listening to this video today.

Yesterday I watched a video from a professed “person just like you” who supposedly had it hard until she found what she was doing wrong.

Yes, I fell for it, was going to actually try to get some counseling in marketing (which so many have tried to sign me up for over the phone lately)…When I saw the cost..even the monthly cost…I was blown away.

I actually started crying because I have been trying to market online for 12 years and still didn’t “get it”. I thought this was my chance to finally find whatever it was I wasn’t quite getting.

I was so upset, actually, that I wrote to her email address and told her how I felt about it.

Anyway, its good to know there is someone like you who is willing to walk those of us who are struggling online, and totally broke, through the steps to figure out what we are doing and how to get there from here.

I sincerely want to thank you for these lessons. I WILL, some day, take you and your family out to dinner, my treat!

P.S. Oh, yeah, here is my vision.

My vison is to have a successful online business in internet marketing, so I can help others out there just like me.
I will work from home so I can work on my own schedule, and spend more time getting closer to my husband and children.
I will work less than 30 hours per week, get off SSI, and my business will bring in at least $500,000 a year within the next 5 years. I will take my children, even though they are grown and practically grown, to all the vacation spots I wanted to share with them while they were young but could never afford.

My vision is to be finacially independent. That is to have over 1 million dollars annually. I would like to use my on line business to help others. I also would like to have my home paid as well as all my debts. I would have two more homes in different areas. And I would love to take my mother (86 yrs old) to Italy where our ancestors live. She always wanted to go there. Along with this I would want to establish the business that my children and grandchildren would not have to work for someone else. This would be their inheritance that they could travel and absorb all they wanted to wherever they wanted.

      Hi Erick,
For my last 10 years I’ve being working as a Respiratory Therapist 12 hours/shift 3-5 days a week. I have a bless family because we all(my wife, 3 boys and one girl) are in good health. But like a lot of us following this course I don’t have the time neither the money to enjoy life other than work and pay bills. I believe this is possible and I know is real. I just want to have the time and enough money to say I’m financially independent. Having close to a year trying to find the formula or learn what system to follow it’s been hard. But I’m still believing!

I believe I can create an info product and a system behind it, integrating affiliate marketing and repeat again and again until that place called success don’t hide from my eyes anymore.

My goal is to reach financial independence not just to enjoy it with my family but to be part of situations helping others in where either the time or the money are not an obstacle or a concern.

      Thanks brother!

My vision revolves around my wife. I married a lady from the Philippines in August of 2006 – about two and a half years ago. All this time I have been trying to get her here to the States. On one of the last hurdles of the immigration process we ran into a snag, that we cannot come up with the documentation from over 15 years ago that would qualify her to submit an application for a Good Conduct Certificate to the Kingdom of Bahrain where she worked for 6 years. You see, most of the people of the Philippines try to get jobs outside the Phil because the pay is so low there and the availability of descent jobs is scarce. Lacking the Good Conduct Certificate the US NVC, which has total discression in the matter will not provide her with a visa.

Initially, My vision is to make atleast $100.00per day in my new profession of an internet marketing, move to the Phil to be with my wife and ultimately establish a multi-million $ business there, provide training and work for hundreds of people in the Philippines, give the people there some hope of a good life in their own country, and as well instill and/or support the already strong family ties to farming and those more needy of the Father’s children.

      Blessings in truth,

My vision is to enjoy frogs eating, and eats thos suckers continuously all of the time, and so much so, that I’ll shortly become really successfull and productive, Having my success with me growing along with my “frogs eating”, I’ll do my best, be my best, and go for the highest high reward possibly possible in the world – that’s why I’ll become multiMillionaire in the next one-two years. and have an explosive growth upward, I’ll allways be in controll and in a piece of mind because I know that I work By the numbers, and because I’ve get the priveledge to be taught by the BEST TEACHERS available in the world, which comes to me fluently by the LAW OF ATTRACTION I’m send to work.
In the next few years I’ll be set for life and find out the next much significant goal to have, and go achieve it while im still young. I’ll direct my family members to follow my path, I’ll live the lifestyle of an millionaire, with the mindset of a rocker: have fun with people more frequently, eat great healthy food, gain a killer muscles, travel with girlfirend or friends, Find myself someone who I’ll personally donate money to which is need it the most and give him a spirituall coaching, massages every week, GO CHASING AFTER VARIETY – not for nothing they said variety is the spice of life- it’s certainly true, spend ju-jitsu time practicing and competing, more outdoors wenting for pleasure, and more ways I’ll find to enjoy myself.

Not only that, I’ll be in touch with the greatest high risk investers and business owners working with them, achieving even greater things.
And for sum up, I’ll have an unfinished pleasurable todo’s, that right before I’m done living and right before I’ll go under ground I’ll say: thank you, I’ve done it’s all.

      Dear Eric,
If you are still reading and keeping up with your readers posts, I hope you have time one day, to read this one…(it’s my first post).

Eric, there are not enough words to express how much I appreciate you for freely sharing this valuable information on how to make money online….without all the hype.

You’ve given me inspiration to keep believing in my dream….my vision. Thank you Eric. I had almost given up on this internet stuff, until I found you just a couple days ago, and began learning to do it the right way.

I’m one of those that bought into “The Dream They Sold Me”….Alex Jeffreys called it: “The Gurus Dream”.

For over two years I’ve been lost in that maze of “HYPE”…buying so many programs and systems it nearly ruined me financially. The time wasted….the days I wanted to pull my hair out…and all that nonsense the Gurus filled me with!

You my friend are a breath of fresh air. The pieces of the puzzle are coming together, thanks to you! I no longer have that victim mentality! Thank God!

Finally, I cross paths with a genuine and honest person that truly cares what it’s all about….helping others help themselves.

      My Vision:

Never to believe another word of hype again!
Always keep my eyes wide open.
      Have a discerning heart.
Learn and apply each lesson taught.
Share and give freely with integrity.
Accept the things I cannot change.
Aquire the wisdom to know the difference.
Have fun each day, no matter what.
Smile a lot and share smiles with strangers.
Make a list but make it short and sweet.
Love and live the Golden Rule.

My vision is one of eternity. The material things we have here while we live our journey in life are only temporary. We cannot take these material things with us after this body dies.

But, we can leave a legacy for our loved ones.
After all, isn’t that why we want to prosper? To help not only ourselves….but our loved ones. And the people around us…as well as those who may never even have a chance in life….unless we help them?

So, my vision includes working hard building an empire of realestate online…that keeps spreading billions of dollars world wide…raising up a new generation of people who have a heart to give.

Making other peoples dreams come true.

There is no better feeling in life, than giving. It is the key to life…here in this world now…moment by moment… and into eternity!

      God Bless You All!

My vision is a composite of several broad goals.

First, to become financially independent. Specifically, to earn a profit of over $500 thousand in the first year as an Affiliate Marketer. Then to earn a profit in excess of $1 million in year 2 and thereafter, thru niche businesses that will be nearly self sustaining.

Second, to build an Internet Marketing business that I can pass on to my children as a source of supplemental or primary income.

Third, to help others achieve financial freedom thru what I have learned in Internet Marketing; to teach others the techniques to help them succeed.

And fourth, to enjoy more time with my family and have and a chance to travel the world and enjoy life to its fullest.

I will invent and put together a social webservice that will inspire people to do good. It will be a catalyst that will generate whole new income streams for welfare and charity organizations. It will be good enough to have imitators, but not until I have sold the model to the biggest welfare organizations in the world.

As a person I will inspire others as someone who has had big adversities in life and still made a big success of herself.
I will have hundreds of people who are personally grateful to me for their income or inspiration.

I will have income from my business that can sustain my health and comfortable, relaxed lifestyle wherever I choose to live. I am able to save 90% of my income, if I want, and I am debt-free. I will only have to work 30 hours per week, and I enjoy my work very much.

I will hold this vision and appreciate myself enough to keep it clear and develop it.

Then I want to start selling information about my true passion which is music. Anything music related to help other musician reach their goals. I want to make one million dollars in my first year so that I can be debt free and give my family the security and freedom we deserve. I want this to be my muse to allow me to play with my band and use the tools I will be selling as first hand accounts of how they work. I want to also use the freedom of owning my own business to take my family on trips and to tour the world with my band.

      Hi Eric

Thanks as always for the tremendous amount of useful info you give to the world.

      My vision is severalfold :

I own a franchise for a very reputable web development/internet marketing firm in the UK.
My efforts to make a success of it in the real world using old methods such as f2f networking etc have met with limited success thus far.
So my first goal is to market that business more effectively using the very tools I advocate to potential b2b customers. I would like to create a simpler site with more effective landing pages with some of the products repackaged and leverage it that way.
Ultimately I want to become the “go to” guy for IM in my local area.

Secondly I want to set up at least 2 and possibly more review type sites for areas of interest (probably poker and personal development) which I’ll monetise by creating my own products and/or affilates. Again I’m not looking to make a fast buck (or pound!) but build a long-term ‘authority’ type site such as this one right here !

Lastly, I feel strongly that if done correctly and with discipline and patience that the traffic/in demand products/clickbank model can bring me a good income over time. The growth of web users worldwide certainly isn’t diminishing and with the advent of better technology it will become even easier to find, choose, try out and compare products in time – this is where I want to be.

So there are 3 streams if you like :

      – Local guru (eventually)
      – Hobby sites which turn into monetised “authority centres”.
      – Proper IM business to make cash.

      Thanks for reading.

Oh, and I know the value of visualising so in 9 years time on my 50th birthday I will have 3 houses including one that sits on a cliff and has a massive glass front overlooking the sea, so my wife and child can look at the view.
I’ll be driving a dark Green Posrche 911, and she will have a DB9. I’ll also have more than enough cash to travel the world playing in poker tournaments when I so desire.

      Cheers, Andrew

Hi Eric. My vision is earning a millon dollars a year, affording a nice house here in Argentina where I live, buying the car I really LIKE and not the on I COULD buy. Travelling one or two times a year for visiting my family in USA, and inviting all of them to go on cruises and all kind of trips together, all at my charge. And building a solid future for my children and for myself for when I decide i´m not working any more because I´m too old or whatever.

      Hi all,

My vision for my online business is for it to create a stream of semi passive cash flow which will in turn fund my invesments in shares and property.

The big picture, as I’m sure it is for a lot of people, is one of freedom of choice – the choice to work/not work as i see fit, choice to help friends and family if need be, choice to do with my time exactly as i please.

Good luck to you all, cheers.

My vision is to finally be able to go go to the store and not take the calculator to see if my wife and I can buy it, as far as vacations, in the last 65 years is when a company went on strike but still had to get a part time job, so vacations have no meanings at all except a waste of money. That comes from having to scrimp so you can take care of your family.
As far as a web site that comes next month if the money is there, no money, slow advancement, but plugging away for the last 6 months.
They say you can start with as little as $5, what can you buy with that, because if you let any one know you have it, your rent, fuel, food, and you can’t for get insurance all go up $10 to get that $5, if you don’t believe me look at all the people losing their homes, their property taxes going up on them.

I have several ideas for an online business or businesses…this part of my vision needs further research and focus but pulling up to that bird’s eye view my online business will allow me unlimited opportunity for personal creative expression as a business consultant helping others to build their visions and success (this includes maximizing our exsisting mobile medical services business and helping my husband building a successful freestyle wrestling club/business) Not as a guru but more as a roll up your sleeves advisor and resource. This business/es will provide me a lifestyle in which I am able to spend time with my family engaged in our sports, art, and music activities. The income will allow us to build a well known and successful wrestling club…to travel and enjoy the ability to eat out whenever we want to!!! Like the old California lottery commercials used to say, I want to be able to “…afford all this cheese!”

Danny, you found a great solution to a bump in the road. Keep thinking outside the box. The two of you will do good things together. Maybe better than you would have alone. It might be a good partnership. Have fun on your jurney.

We wrote down our vision. It is quite long for here. Thank you Eric for helping us to get it down on paper and for all the others that have written. They have been wonderful to read. These are a few of the things that we have:
      1. To have up to 6 income streams 2.To have $7,000 a month from each of them. 3. To grow 1% each year. 4. For the income streams that have redisual $7,000 a month from each of them. With the same 1% increase each year. This is the short list. Thank you again.
