LESSON #13: Getting a Vision for Your Business

By | July 16, 2008

Up until this point, we’ve essentially been covering the requirements and prerequisite knowledge necessary to increase your chances of building a successful online business.

Today marks a turning point.

It’s time to begin focusing on your personal situation, and to turn our attention to your future business…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Without vision, your business probably won’t succeed.

  • I describe vision as being able to “see” a clear picture of your fulfilled goals in your mind.

  • It’s like the box cover of a difficult puzzle…

  • You must begin with the end in mind.

  • Almost every success in my life has come AFTER having a vision for it. (For example, when I won the state championship, and every time I launch a product)

  • The successful business owners that I’ve known ALL have vision.

  • It’s kind of like looking at the world from 30,000 feet. You see the big picture, and not the problems.

  • If you lose sight of your vision, you lose hope. And if you lose hope, it’s game over.

  • As we progress in the lessons, we’ll keep moving forward step by step, but if you don’t start by getting a vision, further efforts could be somewhat futile.

  • If you set your target too low, you may hit it, but there is almost no chance that you will exceed it. On the other hand, if you set your target too high, you may fail, but you will be further along than the “low” target. Therefore it’s better to set your vision higher.

  • One of the biggest things I see holding people back is a “victim mentality”.

  • “Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop this picture. Never think of yourself as failing; never doubt the reality of the mental image. That is most dangerous, for the mind always tries to complete what it pictures. So always picture ‘success’ no matter how badly things seem to be going at the moment.” – Norman Vincent Peale

  • Many of us have taken on a “just get by” mentality.

  • The size of your vision will dictate the size of the result.

  • YOU are valuable. Don’t sell yourself short.

  • Here’s my “disclaimer” that I forgot to include in the video…. “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Prov. 16:9)

    Action steps:

I want you to take a moment to tell me your vision for your business. The vision can involve other areas of your life too, but since we’re working on building your business, it should be focused on your business.

It’s important to write your vision down, so go ahead and post it in the comments below. This is YOUR vision, and there is NO wrong answer.

Focus on the big picture. Don’t worry about the details of how you will get there. We’ll worry about that stuff when we learn about goal setting and business plans, and I’ll be talking about those things in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

    Have a great day!

HI, I’m just getting started and don’t even have anything off the ground yet. But after listening to you and everyone posting here I feel energized and ready to go. I’m an older lesbian female with two boys and two granddaughters. I’ve worked hard all my life and I’m currently waiting for surgery on my back. I would like to establish a site for stay at home moms and crafters to display their creations. To offer an outlet to the little people who need exposure. I’d like to get away from back breaking minimum wage jobs and help support my family so my girlfriend doesn’t have to kill herself. I see a bright future on the internet I really wanna be part of it. I’d also like to offer a positive environment for people who need a little hand up, (much like you are doing). I’m still in the planning stages and a little unsure of myself but you guys are giving me the push I need. Thank you so much for listening to me!

My vision is to learn everything I can about internet marketing and become an expert such as yourself and to make a good living writing ebooks, creating videos, and teaching live online and offline classes about the internet and overall live in general, as mine has be somewhat unique in many ways and I believe I have many experiences that can help younger people to be a better person and have a better live.

I have already earned from $1,500 to $3,000 per day from an email list of well over 150,000 and that was before 9/11. I have sold advertising in publications all the way up to and including USA Today. I have averaged selling one credit card merchant account a day online and received calls from Visa and MasterCard attorney’s and Vice Presidents to see if what I was doing was legitimate or not and it was I assure you, but I still have the dream of teaching others how to earn online and have what they want, much like yourself, of which is what brought me to your lessons session. It is now about 1:30 am and I am rarely online at that time at this point in my career, but am truely taken in by your video lessons and look forward to the day that I do the same and help people to learn how to earn on the internet.
I have been chosen from over 70,000 to give a speech to the California State Legislature, although today I do not live in California. At that time I have worked with a professional speech writer, and even made a video with a professional film crew for that same purpose, and it has always stuck with me about helping others to learn from my experiences and after I have learned everything that you have to offer, I am confident that I can now attain that dream Eric.
Thank you for your lessons, they are now helping me to establish a much clearer vision of what I truely want to do with the knowledge that I have, your are super!!!

      Hi Eric

Not holding back, my ultimate vision (inspired by stories of ancient Cordoba) is to create a place where people of all religions and none can come together and share wisdom and healing. This would not just be a conceptual space (as on the internet) but also a physical place/s. It would be a massive extension and externalisation of what I currently provide through my website, made possible by working less hours while generating enough income to provide for my own needs and those of my family. The ocean and nature provide spiritual sustenance to me so I see myself living in a house where I can hear the sea and meditate in nature. The rest of my days would be committed to inspiring and uplifting others. I had set my income figure at £50,000 per year, which is a high figure in my family’s eyes but maybe I’m being a bit conservative.

      Hi Eric!

I’ve been following you lessons right from #1 until now, and I can frankly say that today’s lesson is THE most important to-date and I might even say that of all future lessons also. Vission is by far the most important attribute one can possess. Without it, there is no future. But during a lifetime, certain occurance happens that blirs our vission for some time. That piriod of time maybe a few weeks, or it may last for years before you can finally refocuss your eforts on something wothwhile.

Let me tell you my storey(and please acept what I will be telling you as facts and not a complaint I simply wish to stand as an example of something that has happened to many other people)I’m am now an old man 75 yr. old last december in fact. I have no education (6th grade public school and and whatever else I could pick up on my own). I.ve been on my own since I was 15 years of age. That is because I lost my parents when I was 6yr. old so all I could do to earn my living is labor intenced work, and lots of hours. Never-the less I was determined very early on that I would biuld a life and a family) for myself. So I set out to do just that. I married when I was twenty six, had three children that at my wages could not afford to send to colledge, but raised them never-the-less, and now I’m the Grandfather of ten and greatgrandfather or one,and proud of it. By the time I was 55yr. old I had a house nearly paid for and I was in line for a good pension, along with savings that I had accumulated and some RSPs I was planning my retirement. Then came the (dirty)90s. 1990s that is.The bottom fell out of the economy here in Canada, and so did we. By “we” I mean all those of us who were considered to old to be of any use as an employee in a new type “CAREER” AND SO I NEVER GOT ANOTHER JOB TO THIS DAY. Before I could reach the age of retiement I had gone through my savings,my RSPs my “poggi” or UI, lost my house, my dreams and my VISSION WENT “pooff”
But I never lost my ambision. and I kept trying until one day it down on me that the only thing that would give any hope at all for the future was something with a computer. Of course, I new nothing about a computer, so I went to a store where one could be bought and ask the “nice man” “hOW DO YOU START ONE OF THOSE?””AND HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?” I won’nt bore you with his answer. And so started my quest for my new career–I was 67yr. old then It was a long learning process and today I’m still working at making it work for me and my family. You see My boys are working 60-65HR week trying to survive. My dream now is to succeed at setting up an internet bisiness that I can leave to my family, My “VISSION” to leave a good web site besiness that will take care of my entire family when I leave this world. All I ask of God is to give me the time to do it before I leave this world.

Take it from an “OLD MAN” WITH ALL KIND OF EXPERIENCE except education,

WITHOUT HOPE AND VISSION “THERE IS NO PLACE TO GO IN THIS WORLD”

Hope I had, YOU Eric gave ME the VISSION I was looking for. Now (I think) I know where I’m going. Thanks a million from,

      Wilf”the old man”Cormier

    8. Hello Eric,

Eric, My vision for the future consists of (2)million + per year average income from a mixed variety of affilliate marketing, training seminars, several personal web businesses, and realestate investments. Two possible web businesses that I would like to start would be: #1 “Awesome Adventure Trips”,primarily because that’s the kind of things I always dreamed of doing. So I figured that while I was making contact and learning how to set up the business I would come across opportunities to actually do some of the things that I would be promoting. Which I could also start forums and blogs on my experiences and thus promote my “awesome adventure trips” business. #2 Some type of construction consulting business or training, or write do it yourself books on the subject. I want to somehow capitalize on over 30 years of many fields of construction mastery. I am very persistent but have some mountainous obstacles it seems keeping me from getting my first campaign going. Eric, I appreciate sincerely this helpful training you have been giving. I am looking forward to a much better future.—Dan

My vision is to have an online business that is related to my interests in: Curling; Military; Music; & Sailing; all while helping other people.

It would bring in a minimum of $250,000.00 per year, so that I could enjoy lots of free time to travel (especially on a World Cruise), helping out my family & friends, as well as allowing me to be very generous by supporting the Charities that I love.

Hi Eric, Since we have had our website up for almost a year now and not doing well. I have a vision of it growing into $1000.00 dollar a day in sales. This will allow my wife to quit her job. I am already retired from the Navy and getting social security. Then we could spend just a few hours with the on line business. We both love to fish and travel, so I see us going on fishing trips to other parts of the world.

My vision is to help 30,000 people save or sell their homes to avoid foreclosure over the next year. In the process I will establish a contact list of people in need of assistance, and investors and Realtors who can help them get through the process from among the people who buy or express interest in my foreclosure guides and other information products.

The direct earnings for myself from the online guidebook I have available now will be around $400,000, but 2 times that amount will be earned through back end products over the course of the next 18 months– teleconference courses, CDs from the teleconferences, and a lead generation business that matches people in need of help with people who can help them.

Within the next six months I will begin a similar process on the topic of helping people understand and deal with bankruptcy, and to help people deal with the interrelationship between bankruptcy and foreclosure. It is expected that the series of materials on this topic will also earn between $500,000 and $1 million in 2010/11.

From these earnings I intend to repay loans from family members and friends who have helped to get us through a rough time, and begin tithing our income again to charitable causes such as Rotary International Foundation, our church, Heifer Project, World Vision, and Habitat for Humanity, as well as local cultural organizations.

We also want to be able to secure education and begin a home ownership fund for our two young adult children and to offer them assistance in starting their own businesses. We will also repair our long neglected home and prepare it for sale so that we can move on with our personal lives from issues that have beset us for the past couple of years.

Since the real estate difficulties we have faced personally have drained us of our retirement funds we must also dedicate at least $200,000 per year into safe and balanced retirement investments so 5 years from now we can slow down the pace a bit and do more travel.

Thanks Eric….I’ve done many great music gigs but never had a vision for it. Great exercise and wise too. What were your track interval workouts? Hopefully you still run!

This is not easy for me. Normally I am very private and to tell people a personal vision is a painful stretch. Would like to be able to afford a good doctor for my daughter. She is a wonderful celloist and is very ill. Would like to see her be herself again, strong and well. Would like to build multiple streams of income, health and wellness for ovbvious reasons, information on how to become an internet marketer, it is daunting just to know where to begin. Would also like personal development to be in there as well. Do not want to set a dollar amount. If it is too low then it would not be challenging enough. Always liked helping people, do not want to sound cliche, but starting a foundation would be interesting.

Eric, my vision is to build a successful online and offline business centered around helping single adults to achieve personal, relational, financial and security success in their lives. By making it possible for them to succeed, I will also achieve my goal of bringing in more than $1 million per year in annual income.

This will allow me the personal and financial freedom to help my family and friends and to live a fuller and richer life.

My vision Would not be uncommon from the majority and that is to have a very big subscriber list that would buy the products that I introduce to them via email so as I have a relativly passive income, so as I am able to do the things offline that I want to do and not have to worry about paying the next bill. A prety common goal I think you would agree.

      Eric,

My vision should be fairly easy to communicate since I have been formulating it, in detail in my mind, for roughly four years.

I have been doing a considerable amount of research on Internet Marketing for three and a half to four years. It has been research only, since my wife and I had been totally consumed both mentally and physically for about the same amount of time with a failing business. We owned a fifty-employee manufacturing facility.

We had put everything we had saved for retirement into this endeavor. Three years ago we were pretty much forced into investing in a new finishing facility to market a new product that our regional dealer-base needed. The cost of the plant and automated equipment was a little over a million dollars. We took the plunge, went into debt a little deeper and just when we had everything completed, the bottom fell out of the US housing market. We ended up in a situation where we were fortunate to get out with the clothes-on-our-backs.

We are still dealing with a few “loose ends” with the final closure, but as of October of this year we were finished with the plant and most of the associated “headaches”. Now, I’m at the point of not looking back and only looking forward to an unbelievable future in Internet marketing.

I’ve done enough research to know that there is a tremendous opportunity in I.M. but it will also require a lot of hard work, but I am very tenacious (maybe to a fault) and a hard worker (definitely to a fault, ask my wife). I’m not moved or impressed with the “get-rich-quick-over-night”, “gifting”, and “scams” crowd. These are the folks that, I fear, make it tough on the legitimate Internet Marketers.

My specific goal, in order of importance, is to replace my wife’s income so that I can bring her home. She is an administrative assistant for a major US corporation. I am looking forward to the time when she will be able to apply her skills and talents to our business in our home office. To bring her home our internet marketing endeavor must (and will) be generating approximately $3,800 to $4,000 per week in net sales. This first goal is to stabilize everything and should be attained in nine to twelve months.

The next phase will be our “enjoying life stage” where we will push the business to provide $500,000 per year; this will be accomplished in less than twenty-four months. We will continue to grow the business, possibly bringing in one part-time associate when we hit the million per year mark.

The above vision will provide a comfortable lifestyle as well as providing funds for extra giving in the forms of a yearly scholarship to a needy student as well as other giving to church and community. Finally, on a more selfish note, it will provide funds for much needed and neglected vacations for my wife and me.

Eric, thanks for all of the heart felt concern and honest advice you show all of your followers. I am amazed at how a young man such as yourself has amassed such wisdom. I am looking forward to more of the same and will thank you in advance for helping me and my wife attain our goals.

      Hi Eric,
Well my vision begins with the internet where I have created multiple streams of income from various sources. Which leads up to my 3 ultimate goals which are 1-Having a non profit business where I put Blind and visually impaired individuals to work. Helping them so they have higher self asteem and self worth. 2-Getting my poetry published 3-Bringing my inventions to the public
And it all doesn’t stop there. I would also create and open clinics to help drug addicts fight their addictions using methods that I have designed instead of conventional methods that I see way to often fail. And these are just a small sample of my visions. If I continue on naming them I could probably go on forever.
Thanks Eric for your incedible insight and lessons. I know that you have given me greater hope for my future success and I am forever indebted to you.
      Thanks again

Our basic goal is to help as many folks as possible come to know and realize a pure personal relationship with CHRIST!!!. More than living the wonderful lifestyle that this would allow me, I can prove to my kids and friends, that I CAN DO IT … Hey! What the hell – I AM DOING IT!
Another really awesome advantage that financial freedom and job satisfaction would give me, is the ability to give generously to charities – A dream that becomes more important to me as I get older.

Working my biz on the internet, having time and money to live freely and comfortably with the people I love, and having some spare cash to share with others … NOW THATS LIVING!

I recently divorced and remarried a dear sweet lady from China whom I met online. My dream(and hers) is to live in upstate NY in the summer and live in China in the winter. I would like to start my online business venture as an affiliate marketer while searching and researching a niche market where I can create my own information product. Hi Eric,

My vision is to interact with people much the way I do on my present job, only having the choice to pursue continuing relationships with some of them and to release others (those with whom I have no positive connection).

In addition, I would like to be able to communicate with people both through written communications and one-on-one conversations.

My vision includes making more money than I have ever made before — enough to live comfortably and to have some left over for investment, for giving directly to those in need and to give to institutions that have a track record of effectively helping people.

Making more money would demonstrate the social value of my efforts (the scorecard). Asking for wisdom in using that money would keep me from believing that “I did it all myself”.

When I have been sick and recovered, I have been grateful, but the “win” never made me arrogant. I have to admit to some fear that financial success would make me too proud.

That’s another area where you are a particularly good role model. You seem to be very unassuming, even if you are very wealthy. An obstacle for my striving for positive change has always been my dislike of the strutting and preening of the very successful.

I want to be both successful and “normal”, if that makes sense.

      Hi Eric:
Back in the mid 90s I was on my way back home from a long stay out in California. I had driven out there but due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to travel by way of public transport back to Florida. During a rest stop in Mexicali I think…I went to the ladies room….while washing my hands I heard a noise and looked up to see what could only be termed as a “bag Lady” come in to the place and go to a sink and attempt to give her self a bath….this was so heart breaking to witness…she had a shopping cart filled with all sorts of odd items that were important to her but what struck me the most was she was so unkept in her appearance….my mind went to wondering…who is she?…does she have family?….why would her love ones allow her to live in these horrible conditions?…That was the turning point for me….I have a fear….I never want to end up like that! I want to be in charge of my own destiny to make as much income to provide for my children and myself! I want to open a shelter to help others who are in need. These would be the top two most important priorities to me I think. My other desires are travel, nice big girl toys…Jewelry, fine art and what nots. I just can not get that picture of her out of my mind after all these years….that is why I strive to work towards building a successful business and not have to ever find myself living on the streets as a “baglady”……

Visions are the most important thing for someone to work for, thrive on, and without vision you pretty much won’t go far. Maybe that’s what some people want. Not me, I’m nearing 50 yrs. old and I am sick of working my tail off for peanuts,my new vision is to get my online business rockin’ and rollin’ so I can make a good living and enjoy my prime years.
      Sincerely;

My vision is to have an successful online business that where I can earn at least $100,000 monthly to provide for my 7 children and live comfortably with travel and leisure. I want my children to have the best education and most importantly I want to make a difference in the lives of the sufferers of urban communities, especially in the public school systems.

Hi Eric, first of all I’d like to say thank you for the free lessons and this is something God had been showing me in His Word – Vision. So here it is, building an email list of 7,000 people, multiple income streams on and offline each one generating £30,000 per month, working 15 hours a week, totally debt free, investing profit wisely and gaining assets.

      Be blessed always,

      S.H.

My vision is to have an online business that earns at least $15,000 per month. Some of the money would go to our church. My husband and I would pay all our outstanding bills and put money away for our children for college. After the bills are paid, we would invest a portion of the money into real estate. My family and I would go on mission trips and sponsor other missionaries. We would be able to help out people in need and I would be able to continue to drop off and pick up my children from school everyday. We would be able to go on several international and domestic vacations every year.

My vision is to make huge sums of money, of which I want to ,in addition to improving my family’s living standards, put aside a large amount in order to sponsor many children’s education. I quit a very well-paying banker’s job eight years ago and I remember fondly those days when I used to send a monthly contribution to an Orphanage. I want to relive those days with better prospects to live life to the fullest.I also want to relieve my husband from the burden of taking care of the family single-handedly. I have the confidence to do this Eric, with your wonderful course. Thanks a lot, Eric.
