LESSON #14: Setting Goals for Your Business

By | July 18, 2008

In the previous lesson, we talked about getting a vision for your business.

A vision is the big picture of where you want to go. You need to have a vision, otherwise you won’t be motivated, and you won’t have a clear direction for your business.

However, a vision needs goals and plans to go along with it…

Main points:

  • Vision vs. Goals. A vision is the big picture of where you want to go; a goal is a specific milestone that helps you get closer to your vision.

  • Important requirements for goals:

    1) they should be specific (measurable)
    2) they should be serious, but attainable
    3) they should have a deadline

  • For example: a goal may be to earn $10,000 of net profit before December 31st.

  • VERY IMPORTANT: Write your goals down, and keep them in sight.

  • (Story about the Harvard MBA graduates…) Those with written goals made 10X the income of everyone else combined.

  • I use a whiteboard… but a piece of paper is fine too.

  • You can have short term goals, long term goals, and everything in between.

  • Re-evaluate your goals periodically.

  • When you reach a goal, be sure to celebrate for a few minutes before setting the next goal.

    Action steps:

    1) Write down one goal, and put it somewhere near your computer.

(Also please post it in the comments below)

It should be specific, attainable, and it should have a deadline.

Keep in mind that you will need to keep setting new goals for yourself as you build your business. As you continue with these lessons, it will become more apparent what your goals should be, so write them down frequently as you go through the process.

Now you will need to develop a plan for reaching your goals, and I’ll be talking about that in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

    Have a great day!

      My vision is financial freedom.
My first big goal is to make $3000/month with my website. The first small goal is to complete this educational internet course and use this info to monetize my website.
My second small goal is to start a webstore and sell health and wellness products ( my website is about heath and wellness, so I can link my webstore to the website.
My 2 small goals will be accomplished by September 15, 2012. My big goal will be accomplished by October 30, 2012

      Hi Eric,
My vision is having an Internet business earning a million dollars a year in about 3 years time. I would have enough resources for my family including my three grandchildren (so far) to live in reasonable comfort. I would also have a large house in a nice neighborhood and be able to travel with my entire family once or twice a year.
My immediate goals for this year includes building my own website by the end of this month (August 31, 2012), finishing all these lessons (100 to 120) by September 30, 2012 and earning my first $1,000 by December 31, 2012. Once I have the feel of this business and encouraged by early success, I would confidently proceed to consistently work to achieve my million dollar dream. This will come about with the Will of God and the help of wonderful people like you.

      Hi Eric,
One of my vision(s) was to finish my first movie script. And I finished this up in December with the last rewrite and it is ready to go to agent. I have a second script finished, and have put a deadline of January 31, 2013 for second rewrite. Need to pump. The third script, well on its way to finishing first draft status and have also a deadline of January 31, 2013. The fourth script, has not been started, but one I will be able to write fairly quickly, because this one has been running through my head for over thirty years. My initial goal for my internet is to get it up and going and make five thousand by end of month. I have certain websites done, but I need your expertise to monetize them and drive traffic and build a lists, etc.etc. I have a goal to purchase a home by the end of 2013. Do I need to put a value on the home? That is enough for right now. I could go on and on what I want to accomplish in this year of 2013. I would like to marry in 2013, too. That’s a movie script — literally– in itself. Eric, I have never thought about this. But everything I have ever wanted and written down, it eventually came to me. Everything. It is crazy that you can truly manifest these things. Need dates, because they all came at varying times, even though written down at the same time. Have never put a date by something I wrote down. Also, to sell my first full length movie script in 2013 is a goal of mine. And option one of the three. I could write more and more. Tom

I’ve put my vision and my goals as my desktop wallpaper so that I have a constant reminder every time I use it. You can’t really get a more constant reminder than that.

After 3 years as an internet marketer, I made a goal in 2010 to produce $5,000.00/year, but I have not even come close to that because of info. O/load and lack of focus. So now I am going to follow your course and re-focus and take it step by step.

Thanks for all this golden info. Eric.

      Eric,
I answered your email for help for the Oklahoma victims. Wasn’t much interested in what they were selling, but you ought to know that Jay uses high pressure sales tactics where he won’t take “No” for an answer. It felt like being in an upsell hell. Every time I thought I would get to the end where I could just download the material, another page would pop up. They will never get any of my business again.
