LESSON #14: Setting Goals for Your Business

By | July 18, 2008

In the previous lesson, we talked about getting a vision for your business.

A vision is the big picture of where you want to go. You need to have a vision, otherwise you won’t be motivated, and you won’t have a clear direction for your business.

However, a vision needs goals and plans to go along with it…

(Watch this video…)

Main points:

  • Vision vs. Goals. A vision is the big picture of where you want to go; a goal is a specific milestone that helps you get closer to your vision.

  • Important requirements for goals:

    1) they should be specific (measurable)
    2) they should be serious, but attainable
    3) they should have a deadline

  • For example: a goal may be to earn $10,000 of net profit before December 31st.

  • VERY IMPORTANT: Write your goals down, and keep them in sight.

  • (Story about the Harvard MBA graduates…) Those with written goals made 10X the income of everyone else combined.

  • I use a whiteboard… but a piece of paper is fine too.

  • You can have short term goals, long term goals, and everything in between.

  • Re-evaluate your goals periodically.

  • When you reach a goal, be sure to celebrate for a few minutes before setting the next goal.

    Action steps:

    1) Write down one goal, and put it somewhere near your computer.

(Also please post it in the comments below)

It should be specific, attainable, and it should have a deadline.

Keep in mind that you will need to keep setting new goals for yourself as you build your business. As you continue with these lessons, it will become more apparent what your goals should be, so write them down frequently as you go through the process.

Now you will need to develop a plan for reaching your goals, and I’ll be talking about that in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.

    Have a great day!

My goal is go through this program first, after that my money goal is to scale! I will have eight steps for every product. I’ll start off making the product myself…it’ll take three to five days to complete one. It will bring in a minimum five dollars per day…$150. dollars per month. By the end of the year I will outsource all the steps, except product selection and keyword research. In six months after that I will scale the 150 to 10,000 per month by using the money I make along the way to outsource. That’s my goal.

The story about the Harvard MBAs has many iterations, all of which are myths.
The original claimed that Yale graduates were interviewed years after graduation and the data indicated a 5x differential in income of goal writers vs. non-writers. (Sometimes the factor was your “Harvard version” 10x.)
Research, including calls and interviews with Yale administrators and literature searches for the specifics, resulted in no record of such a poll having been taken, or any other evidence for such a large impact for goal writing. Not to say it’s not a great idea. It’s simply important to tell the truth. Many people write goals and don’t act on them or see them to fruition, as will many, if not most of the people who responded with comments to your post. Write whatever you want, baby; it’s all about action!

I like to share my goals with you:
      1. Short-term goal- To learn YouTube/video marketing and set up2-3 campaigns promoting affiliate products
by end-December. Work forward to earn my first $1000 by March 2014.
      2. In-between goals – Learn 2 more IM strategies e.g. facebook marketing and Brendan Mace’s 7 Step Systems.
( set up my first website on March/April after I see my success in video marketings). Also learn e-mail marketing in
the process and manage my autoresponder account effectively.
Never skip Eric’s Tip’s lessons and will do all the homework.
      3. Long-Term goal- Earn a full time income by end 2014 and quit my job in the year 2016.

Goal 1: By December 6, 2013: To get my above three websites interlinked with the great content articles I’ve been finding on the article websites (thank you to all the great travel writers out there!) with clickable links to articles about places to go and travel tips on most of the webpages. I want to design travel websites for a different travel planning experience, a place where people can hang out and read great articles about places to go, see fabulous pictures, get travel tips, interact with like-minded people on forums, and maybe book a trip.
Goal 2: By December 13, 2013: To publish press releases for my websites; submit them to the search engines and add a forum to at least one of the sites.
Goal 3: By December 20, 2013: To design my other sites: http://www.ezeuropetravel.com and http://www.ezgreentravel.net.
Goal 4: By January 10, 2014: To launch the last 2 sites, interlinked with the first 3 along with more great content articles, do press releases about them and submit to the search engines.
Goal 5: For the next several weeks learn how to do free promotion/advertising and DO IT!
Goal 6: By February 1, 2014: Figure out what my next project will be and what I need to do to maintain my travel websites to the highest quality to get visitors and make money.

      Hello!

First of all thank you so much for these lessons. I was also on information overload. I am a stay at home, homeschooling mom with 4 littles. To help make up for much needed income after no longer working at home for my previous employer, we have been selling on ebay for a couple of years and last year opened an etsy shop but feel the Lord may be leading us a different or additional direction.

      Our goals are:
-Pray about every step and step as the Lord leads
-To continue and improve upon ebay and etsy until it is/if it is no longer needed.
-Complete these lessons in Eric’s Tips completely by March 15 2014.
-Set up blog about our life passions (linking ebay and etsy stores first) and start blogging.
-Continue research on niche, affiliate marketing learning and growing.
-Take the steps provided in these lessons to put in action the beginnings of online marketing business.
-Continue and complete the web design and web classes we have started taking.
-Short term goal to replace husbands monthly income.
-Long term goal to work together with my husband in doubling the income we are at right now.
-Long term purchase small house for our family and an RV or knowing us RV as a house so we can travel 🙂

I did have one question regarding these lessons vs the no money income stream? Are they similar or not at all?

Thank you again! Looking forward to the lessons.

My goal is to earn $89,000 from my website in the next 3 to 6 weeks. I’ve already come a long way in developing my website and have a small but loyal email list started. I’ve just been redeveloping my site and am currently in the process so for any visitors, please keep this in mind. I put in about 12 hours a day so the changes are frequent right now. I’m preparing for high traffic and want everything to be just right first 🙂
