LESSON #16: How to Stay Motivated

By | July 25, 2008

In the previous lessons, we’ve talked about getting a vision for your business, setting goals, and creating a business plan.

However, all the effort you’ve put into building the foundation of your business will be for nothing unless you follow through and take action.

So today we’re going to talk about staying motivated…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • One of the most commonly asked questions… “How do I stay motivated and take action?”

  • What motivates you? And how do you get motivated?

  • We’re all motivated by different things.

  • Short term motivation vs. Long term motivation

    Examples: Losing 5 pounds or getting a new car by a certain date = short term

    Feeling good about yourself or living a certain lifestyle = long term

  • Goals = short term

  • Vision = long term

  • Your primary motivation should to be tied to your vision.

  • Your vision needs to inspire you for the long term.

  • This business requires self motivation.

  • External factors vs. Internal motivation

  • Externally influenced motivation is not a bad thing. It’s a natural part of life… But it’s not enough.

  • You need internal (intrinsic) motivation to keep you going when the going gets tough.

  • Some of my internal motivators include:

    -My faith
    -Family (external factor, but there is also internal side to it)
    -A sense of fulfilling my purpose

  • Figure out what your internal motivators are, and then make sure that they are a part of your vision.

  • Tips and tricks are NOT the solution for why so many people are not motivated. However, they can be helpful for short term daily motivation. Here are a couple of lists for you to check out if you’re interested in those kind of tips…
    http://www.lifehack.org/articles/productivity/thirteen-tricks-to-motivate-yourself.html
    http://zenhabits.net/2007/02/top-20-motivation-hacks-overview/

    Action steps:

    1) Figure out what really motivates you internally

    2) Make sure those things are a part of your vision

    3) Think about whether your vision will motivate you for the long term, and if not, tweak your vision.

    Even if you follow all of my advice from this lesson, there will still be times when you don’t feel motivated. There will be times when you don’t want to complete the steps. It involves a choice, and the choice is yours. I’ll be talking about it in the next lesson.

    As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below. (Feel free to share something that motivates you)

    Have a great day!

      I am so full of motivation right now… short term and long term motivation. I couldn’t write down all of it, but after more than 13 years in Thailand, I will have to go back to Germany by next month. Business was not good last year, and due to difficulties I will have to leave my wife here in Thailand. I have to come back as soon as possible. This is my biggest motivation. I want to, I have to, and I will succeed with in IM.

      All the best,

      My problem is not so much motivation as it is about distraction. Staying on task is my biggest challenge. My motivation lasted as long as I was online (a couple of years…working at it 18 hours a day…7 days a week). When I was faced with the very hard decision, get evicted or pay my internet service provider, well, obviously, it wasn’t really a decision. I was forced to give up my online business venture.

      However, what did prevent me from doing the right things at the right time was my lack of focus on each task. I would get easily distracted with social marketing, building relationships, checking out the next big marketing tools and products, etc. And, yes, I did limit my motivation’s effectiveness by engaging in the survival mentality, rather than tying my motivation to my vision.

      Perhaps I would have been more willing to stay on task if I had developed my (motivision)–I just made that up– more.

      My motivations:

      1. As a single mom, providing as many opportunities for my daughter as I can;

      2. getting and staying healthy;

      3. being in a position to give to others–rather than always taking;

      4. not having to tell my child that I don’t have the money to get her new shoes or a skirt or jeans, or hot lunches, etc.;

      5. having the freedom and the means to enjoy life…both in it’s simplicity and in the finer things;

      6. not ever having to worry about how to keep a roof over my family’s head again;

      7. having the means to be accountable to bill collectors on time, every time, without fail;

      8. being a productive, problem solving citizen.

      My main internal motivations are my faith, my family, and i absolutely dread ever having to work in a J O B again. I’m still in the learning curve so my motivation is high to keep learning and applying what i know. If/When i hit those tough tedious days then taking some time out for me is usually my strategy. Enjoying it all so far Eric, Thanks.

      I have to admit that I have lack of motivation sometimes. I used to be a person who didn’t gave up. Then something happened and I lost everything. Now I’m back on my feets again, but sometimes I’m not that motivated as I should be. Okay, I just have to tweak my visions like you said.

      This was a good lesson. I have to keep motivated because of my vision – retirement and lack of any pension plan. I want the lifestyle of freedom without financial worries.
      It helped me re-evaluate and see that I am and need to remain on track. Thanks

      Motivation is definitely NOT a problem!!! However, staying awake @ 12;26 am. is a serious challenge after seeing my first born GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL!!! I NEED SOME MONEY TO SEND HER TO COLLEGE!!! And I have three more little motivators behind her. And then there’s Mom…if Mom ain’t happy…’nuff said…Besides, there’s a great big part of the world I haven’t seen YET. Good night, I ABSOLUTELY MUST BE ALERT TO ACCOMPLISH SEEING MY VISION THROUGH TO COMPLETION…AND BEYOND!!!

      Hiya Eric, motivation seems to have gone from me at this time. I had it when I was younger, yes I wanted an Opel Manta which was my favourate car at the time and got it.( well two in the end actually) Then I got myself a mobile fish and chip van, a big commer dodge like those security vans you see driving around. ( big mistake,took a loan on my house,lasted 7mths and lost my house.)Too soon after being out on the sick with ciatica ( trapped nerve in my back) for the previous 11mths. Now twenty years later i’ve been on line for over five years, I bought my computer to make moneybut until now zip.

      Unfortunately little did I know that in those five years i’ve got prostate cancerand havebeen having treatmentfor well over a year now. I ‘m tellig you this for a bit of sympathy,( I hate that) but to say, ok i’m back at work and have been for a few months now but still have to have hormone injections every three months for the next three years,and this where my dillema is. IT TAKES ALL YOUR GO AWAY BECAUSE THE SOUL PUPOSE IS TO KEEP TOUR TESTOSTERONE LRVELS DOWN.I can walk around all day withall the miserable people all day and there are many there and wear a smile, mainly to “annoy the ‘orrible gits” but back home after i’ve made my tea and read my emails, hundreds sometimes i’ve got nothing left. Will I give up? No chance! How do I find more to motivate myself to get all of that stuff on my hard drive working for me?I WILL FIND A WAY I’VE COME TOO FAR NOW!*****Ron UK.

      Hello Eric.

      I believe another part to succeeding is to give thanks for what you have and what you will receive in the future. When I look around me I realize just how lucky I am despite being on disability due to MS. I am thankful for me faith, family and all that I am and have and all that I will become and will receive. This is how I stay motivated. It’s only part of the equation as I also believe you must have a vision and set goals in order to achieve your ultimate goal. Having a positive attitude will go a long way to helping you achieve your vision of your future. Staying positive takes practice but if you take time to give thanks,everyday, for what you do have or for what you achieved that day it will become easier to remain positive while working towards your ultimate goal.
      Well, that’s my two cents, I thought I’d mention it as it has been the motivator in my life since I was about 17 or 18 yrs old and I remain positive no matter what is thrown my way. God is there to carry me when I need Him.

      Regards,

      Claude

      There is a mismatch between my internal motivation and my business vision. I need to come up with an information product that people will want to buy. Although I personally may be interested and motivated to spend time on Topic X or Topic Y, I can’t turn those two topics into an income-generating stream. My online business will provide me with income, for which I am grateful, but I don’t feel passionate about it the same way as I do about other topics which I research on the Internet out of genuine curiosity.

      Hi Eric, what motivates me is knowing that I can be in control of my own earnings without an external force, such as an employer telling me what to do, when to do, and here is what you get paid, regardless of how much you performed for the employer. I want to be in control of my own earning destiny in a more free enterprise manner through my own business, rather than through the confines and control of an employer…Friends, Lloyd.

      Very valuable reminder Eric. One easily gets caught up in the rush to conclude short term issues, forgetting the fuel for long term success comes from your inner source. Your vision on life. So work on that and the rest will be manageable and sustainable.

      Faith, this is my core of motivation. Faith in my destiny. I feel that I must work for my family and myself. I am unemployed and my wife works each day. I get tired of having to ask for things. I am motivated short term to be able to provide for self and others.

      I’m reminded of a favorite quote of mine: Vision without a task is only a dream. A task without a vision is but drudgery. But vision with a task is a dream fulfilled.

      For the most part I have been staying motivated even though I haven’t made any money. I know it can be done and I know I can do it. My problem is days when my focus wains. When I’m still working but not efficiently. Today was one of those days but I was able to keep plugging away. I got my focus back by concentrating on 2 topics. Since I was bouncing all over from emails I knew I couldn’t just do one thing today. It worked and I got a lot done. I just have to think of how I will have to go back to a dreaded job soon if I don’t start making some money. 4 kids are not cheap! I look forward to your nightly lesson. It is something I can count on. Stability is hard to maintain in this kind of business. Thank you so much.

      Cultivating a reasonable view of what we can do will spare us many frustrations. By setting balanced goals, we have a sense of achievement despite our limitations. We thus rejoice over what we can accomplish, even if it is relatively modest.—Gal. 6:4.

      Several of my family members have fallen on hard times due a great deal to the economy. My motivation is to help several people financially, loved ones, and people who I feel lead by God to give money to. This is my motivation, and I can’t get my business up and running fast enough! I sometimes get impatient because I’m new to this arena, and don’t know how to add links, banners, contact pages, traffic… to my sites, in order to get them up and running.

      I am truly amazed by the very high standard of information that Eric has put together in these lessons. No other person on the Internet comes even close. I have been receiving these lesson for a while but they have just sat in my in-box collecting dust because of other distractions. Today I went through 6 lessons and have decided to quit the other schemes that I signed up for. That has become one of my goals. I have been wasting my time on other schemes that do not give the basic information in such an easy, digestable manner. I have just been through the motivation lesson and for the first time actually feel motivated. I’m fed up with watching webinars that only happen at midnight because of my time zone. Eric, you are gold and I intend to follow you all the way – make or BREAK!
