LESSON #17: Commitment (The Choice is Yours)

By | July 29, 2008

In the previous lesson, we talked about motivation. More specifically, we talked about the need for long term, intrinsic motivation, and about how it should correlate with your overall vision.

I talked about how you need to be inspired and excited about your vision, and about how you can draw motivation from your vision.

But excitement alone is not enough to keep you going…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Motivation is tied to our emotions, and our emotions have peaks and valleys.

  • What will you do when the excitement is gone?

  • (About the “hype cycle”)

  • You need commitment, and commitment is a choice.

  • “A vision grows from your soul, fed by commitment and passion, and can be articulated with descriptions of how things will be when the vision is achieved. If you cannot describe life within the vision, it is only a dream of imagination; if you cannot find the passion and perseverance, perhaps all you have is a plan for a goal.” – Dion McInnis

  • Passion comes easy for most of us entrepreneurial types, but commitment isn’t always so easy.

  • (Example of commitment in marriage)

  • The biggest enemy of commitment is probably fear.

  • Tips to help you commit to your vision…

    1) Feed your vision
    2) Make it the right level of priority
    3) Make sacrifices
    4) Develop good habits
    5) Be flexible
    6) Keep moving forward, no matter what
    7) Solidify your commitment in writing

(Example of Bill Bright’s contract with God)

    Action steps:

    1) Commit to your vision. Write it down, sign and date it.

    2) List your priorities, in order of importance.

    3) Write down some habits you would like to develop, choose one to start with, and do it!

As you commit to your vision, I believe you will be mentally prepared to begin the work of building your online business.

The foundational portion of this learning series is almost complete; there’s just one more important question I need to address in the next lesson before we start putting together the pieces of your business.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below. (Feel free to let me know if you’ve decided to commit to your vision)

    Have a great day!

Take it one step at a time… don’t get overwhelmed. But do take action 🙂 I recommend continuing to follow these lessons.

Hi Eric, I really enjoy your video’s. You always express good sense in your words. I look back on my first 9 months of internet marketing and think to myself if I had only listened to Eric and nobody else how good would my business be right now. Your true gentleman. I might just ban everyone else on my inbox.

      Hi ERIC,
      I HAVE to Thank You!
I’d be proud if I were in your Shoes simply because … You’ve GOT me!
I’m a father of three who have taught me NOT to be easily catched!

You have WELL PLANNED This lesson; For THIS reason is a success! Consequence: IT is Worthwhile TO well-PLAN !

One Only shadow… and I hope you won’t feel bad on this: Why do you promote “magic List Bot”? It seems to me one of that shiny bright objects you told me to stay away… It also claim to “steal” custumers on others list (legally)… Would you do something you don’t want others to do to you? (forgive my English, I’m improving)

Anyway, I really Want to Thank YOU,
      Kind Regards

      Thanks 🙂

Remember the caveat… don’t buy *unless* you understand why you’re buying. The List Bot is only for those who are already building a list, and no it does not steal anything. That is simply an attention getting headline on their website.

      eric,

Great lesson. man I wish I would have found someone like you 40 years ago. Even though I haven’t made a dime, while spending some money and a lot of time…I will. Some of the contacts, I have been exposed to while working my dream, have been worth the frustrations and disappointments. Keep up the great work.

You are right about commitment and from time to time we become slag in our ways. These same principles we use in our walk with God. Thanks Eric for bringing these helpful insights to the surface, God Bless!

      Hi Eric

This lesson is really cool! Actually, I just wanted to let you know that I’ve been creating and using a Vision Book since February of this year. I got the idea from a book I read and it has worked well so far. However, I reckon these action steps might help to supercharge the book even further, so I’ll write them in there tonight!

      Many thanks and best regards

I am “Newbie” and I have become very inspired by your lessons, I have writtern down my vision, my goals and I have committed myself to achieve then (and signed it!!) I often read some of the comments below each lesson and I have a question with regard to do I need to be purchasing Xsitepro and someone else mentioned adsense templates? What is Xsitepro, are these things I need or am I getting ahead of myself.
      Thanks

Thanks 🙂 Yes you’re getting ahead of yourself. You may indeed choose to invest in XsitePro, as it’s a great program. However, you will learn about these things in lesson #30 and #31 to help you decide which method you want to use for your website.

      Hi Eric

I am still in awe of your content and teaching method, also your system for this part of your business. Very compelling!

These lessons are part of your marketing system, right? I do realise they fulfil your desire to help people also. This is the type of marketing I want to do… Give value and not mislead people. I struggled with the idea of being a sales person for some time until I discovered I could do it this way, with integrety.

I also think anyone getting married should watch this video.(I’d say LOL but I’m very serious) You put into words what I’ve thought for a long time.

Hi Eric: Great lesson! Commitment is so important when building any business, not just an online business. I’ve struggled with commitment over the years, but in the end, I always managed to get done what I set out to do. I guess thats commitment of a sort, it just took my commitment a little longer than others. However, the older I get, the easier I find it to commit to a project and stick with it until finalization. Wisdom Perhaps however, I would rather think of it as many years of learning to work smarter rather than working later.

      Dear Eric,

You are not just a business teacher! I have had great dreams and most of them have not been achieved due to lack of goals, plans, and commitment. You must be a gifted person, a messiah, who is truly effective in bringing out the best in the person that you teach. Now, with your lessons, they’re not only my business guide but a guide about life; I’m now more serious about my vision and with it the goals and plans and commitment. God bless you and your family Eric!

Thank you for your simplicity and honesty to make me think and prompt me into action. I have a family like you and are struggling financially, emotionally and physically. I don’t want to spend the next 20 years to own my house and that it. I want to make an impact on other peoples life so they can live life to the full. Life for me is too short. The best muscle I can exercise is my mind. This will give me the greatest returns for my family and business. Any other muscle in my body will not give the same rewards.

      Hi Eric,
Great lesson. Though I have to say that sometimes even if you are committed to something, things don’t work like you want them to work. You refer to marriage. I was committed to my marriage, but my wife didn’t, and now we are devorced. I learn something from it. Even if you are committed to something, if it doesn’t just work, there is no point to bang your head to the wall. Sometimes it’s better to change your vision and get to different direction. That’s what I have done, and I’m on my way to success.

This was a great lesson. Things I’d only thought about are now down on paper – especially the priorities. It was good to get my VISION down, dated and signed and up on the wall were I can read it from time to time.
I have clearer ideas now about the direction my life’s heading and how I will spend my remaining years. Thanks Eric!

In the process of registering and hosting a website, there is a step where the hosting company will ask you to choose between www or http:// for your address. I am not sure of the advantages or disadvantages of either. Could you please advise which you would choose and why?

      Reply
    31. Eric Post author

This is not something you choose. All domains use both the www and the http. That’s just a part of the internet protocal for getting TO your domain. But virtually all browser software these days does not require that you type in the full address.

For example you could type in:

      ericstips.com
      http://ericstips.com
      http://www.ericstips.com

and they all take you to the same place.

Hey Eric – good morning from a damp UK . O how I wish I had these lessons a few years back when I first visited online business opps. This lesson 17 is pivotal and seems to be a culmination point for me . Talk about thought provoking – I can pinpont so many instances in the past where , as you describe , the vision and the goals did not stack up and so , they got dumped and I slumped – we have a history of poetry in England ! Some were clearly dreams without the substance to back ’em up . Not just in business though is it ?? Also in life we need to make decisions , set goals and make sure our conscience agrees …’Did I want it enough ‘ springs to mind . I could go on for ages but all the guys on the programme would lose the will! This is truly a light bulb moment for me Eric . I’m extremely excited about the potential and my vision has suddenly leapt out in front of me . Thank you SO much for fuelling this transformation .

Thank you Mr. Eric for your lessons.
I am really motivated by these lessons. I am a beginner in this field of Internet marketing. As a family we have a big project in India. We both are nurses working in UK. Our earnings unable to accomplish the project. Always with loans and severe debt problems.
We both are Christians. A servant of God prophecied that I will be a business man and to remember him when I am successful. It is very unusual for me to be in business. I whole heartedly thank God for I am under the mentorship of a Christian. I did not miss even a single lesson till now. Our family vision and committment are strong. I strongly believe that God will take me to a level where I will spend 90% for Gods kingdom and we will have a decent good Christian life with remaining 10%
God Bless you Eric and I thank God for you.
