LESSON #17: Commitment (The Choice is Yours)

By | July 29, 2008

In the previous lesson, we talked about motivation. More specifically, we talked about the need for long term, intrinsic motivation, and about how it should correlate with your overall vision.

I talked about how you need to be inspired and excited about your vision, and about how you can draw motivation from your vision.

But excitement alone is not enough to keep you going…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Motivation is tied to our emotions, and our emotions have peaks and valleys.

  • What will you do when the excitement is gone?

  • (About the “hype cycle”)

  • You need commitment, and commitment is a choice.

  • “A vision grows from your soul, fed by commitment and passion, and can be articulated with descriptions of how things will be when the vision is achieved. If you cannot describe life within the vision, it is only a dream of imagination; if you cannot find the passion and perseverance, perhaps all you have is a plan for a goal.” – Dion McInnis

  • Passion comes easy for most of us entrepreneurial types, but commitment isn’t always so easy.

  • (Example of commitment in marriage)

  • The biggest enemy of commitment is probably fear.

  • Tips to help you commit to your vision…

    1) Feed your vision
    2) Make it the right level of priority
    3) Make sacrifices
    4) Develop good habits
    5) Be flexible
    6) Keep moving forward, no matter what
    7) Solidify your commitment in writing

(Example of Bill Bright’s contract with God)

    Action steps:

    1) Commit to your vision. Write it down, sign and date it.

    2) List your priorities, in order of importance.

    3) Write down some habits you would like to develop, choose one to start with, and do it!

As you commit to your vision, I believe you will be mentally prepared to begin the work of building your online business.

The foundational portion of this learning series is almost complete; there’s just one more important question I need to address in the next lesson before we start putting together the pieces of your business.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below. (Feel free to let me know if you’ve decided to commit to your vision)

    Have a great day!

      Hi, Eric,
I will be 69 next January, and as I watched this lesson much of my life was revealed before my eyes. I had a limited contract with God, and He held me to it. In 1969, when I left active duty with the US Navy, I committed to Him ten years of my life working in environmental protection. It took two years to find my dream job, chief spokesperson for a state environmental agency. Ten years later — almost to the day — in 1981, my job was abolished by the state legislature. My reward (with Divine Intervention, I am certain) was a two-year temporary recall to active duty as a Naval Reserve Lieutenant Commander and prompt promotion to Commander — living with my family in a Newport, RI, mansion with the best income of my life. An incident with a dreadful pastor there caused us to withdraw from the church and from God, and life has been chaos ever since.

      • I am committed to my vision
      • Subject to other immediate income opportunities, my top priority is establishing my business consistent with my vision
      • I will overcome my fears and doubts and stay on course
      • I will use EFT, the Emotion Code, and other techniques to overcome my fears and doubts
      • I will read my vision, goals, and commitment statements daily
      • I will avoid things that distract me from working on my business
      • I will develop habits that keep me focused on the business
      • I will commit to a minimum of 40 hours per week on building my business but I will shoot for 60 hours.

      my biggest problem is
i think the grass is “greener” on the other side then I stop promoting what ever I am doing and promote the new product then I look back and see whatever I was selling the last time is greener or the next yard is greener and go promote it.
i hope this lesson will help

Eric tou talk about motivation but how can one be motivated when their inbox is full of 200 plus emails saying not listen to this person and dont buy this or buy this and start making money in 15 minutes I am so confussed and I have bought things but have no idea how to use them.
I can understand that to be motivated I need to focus on other things I just want to know how do I not listen to all the other people when I am so new to all this and am trying to get a start in online marketing.

      regards

I wrote out my Vision, Priorities, & Needed Habits in my notebook, and here is what I wrote so far.

      MY VISION:

      1. I commit to running a successful online business with integrity, together with hard work in providing great customer service, along with quality products and services for the niche I will ultimately market to.

      2. I will accept the challenges and risks along the way, as there will also be rewards from it.

      3. My short term goal is to be making a minimum of $1,000.00 a month by 04/30/2011, and still working on the long term goal at the moment.

      4. I commit to working hard each day going forward in the business.

      MY PRIORITIES:

      1. Being there for family and friends at appropriate times to maintain good relationships, and give help when needed in crisis.

      2. Building and maintaining a successful business.

      3. Taking care of my home.

      4. Hobbies and recreation when I choose to have some leisure time fun.

      NEEDED NEW HABITS:

      1. Getting organized, and setting a concrete schedule to follow.

      2. Focusing on the tasks needed to move the business along in a efficient and profitable manner, and not get sidetracked by hype, or easy money offers and messages.

      3. Overcoming procrastination and fears!!

      Dear Eric

Thanks for the foundational stuff of my online business. Your lessons are so genuine and guiding. I will write down my vision and date it as you said. I will discipline my mind to be committed to it.

I will endure hardships, fight obstacles and persist until i achieve and leave my vision as a lifestyle.

Thanks a million times Eric for your tutorials. You are different from these other online vultures who prey on innocent people’s hard earned monies before they teach what online business is all about.

I’m quite skeptical about getting into online business, cause I don’t have the confident in myself, whether I can do it or failed again. I always do things half way, never complete to the end. Maybe this is one of the reasons I didn’t accomplished much on online business. But when following your training, I understand it not easy to really to commit yourself to it, one must have that spirit in us to do it no matter how if you want to be successful.

      Hi Eric,
My vision?… I want to walk out of my front door with a coffee in one hand and a great book in the other and sit in my favorite chair and do nothing but read. The only care is to decide if I want to leave my book long enough to get more coffee.
Now before you say that’s not good enough let me explain in better detail….
You can’t see what the house I’m walking out of or the lawn, chair, car in the driveway all looks like. In my mind it’s the house I’ve always wanted with the perfect car and the perfect lawn. I’ve never had a very large porch with nice lawn furniture and would love that. When I make the comment above I’m picturing the dark red brick entry with the dark wood door between a small series of side windows. I’m also picturing the very large covered porch with several choices of sitting places and potted flower pots all around. This porch overlooks a nice lawn with a few large maple trees, one silver and one red. My shrubbs are neat and the flower beds are pretty because I’ve hired someone to keep them that way.
All of this will be possible because my buisness is a success and I’ve made the choice to go forward and never look back.
Thanks for the lessons. You’ve been great.

Great! It sounds like a psychological analysis. Vision, motivation, commitment, and other step of actions. Like you said, marriage is like a business (thought this is rather progresiveness ideology ha ha) it requires a commitment.

It comes in a time of “darkness”, when a good reminder of were we find motivation was needed. Same as last lesson. This has helped me to start finding again the origen of my dreams, my goals… I couldn’t figure what was missing… Now I know I hqve been running on pure passion for what I do, but as mentioned, its never enough. I am so ready to find again my commitment and redirect my motivation to my vision. Thank you!

I am glad to say, that I have been doing this for years, generally, and specifically with my life as well as my goals. So, I see that I have been on the right track.

Where I got lost was attempting to take those I loved and cared about alone with me. I did not realize that if this was not THEIR goal as well, that they would be holding me back.

Another ah-ha is realizing that life happens, and putting things off for a better time will NEVER happen. So, now, I do what I need to do with the plan to helping those I care about, later. And, regardless of what’s going on in my life that can be viewed as an obstacle to just make smaller steps, but keep moving forward, and then when I can take larger steps, again, I will not have lost any ground or momentum.

Thanks soooo much for being that beacom Eric..!!!
