LESSON #18: Should I Quit My Day Job?

By | August 3, 2008

Up until this point, I’ve been covering many of the fundamentals and principles of success that will help you create a solid foundation for your business.

In the next lesson, we’ll move out of this phase, and begin to put together the pieces of a new business, but first I need to answer an important question that many people have asked me…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Should you quit your day job? YES! But not yet. (*Based on two assumptions)

  • Conservative advice: Keep your job as long as possible. (90% of advice being given)

  • Liberal advice: Quit your job today.

  • I’m in the middle.

  • If your vision involves a life in which you’re no longer working at your present job, then at some point you will HAVE to quit your job in order for that vision to be fulfilled.

  • The only question now is “when?”

  • Questions to help you weigh the decision…

    1) Is your job hurting you? (If yes, it may be time to quit)

    2) Do you have a vision and a solid plan for your business? (If no, you’re not ready)

    3) Do you already have a written goal for quitting your job? (Could be helpful)

    4) Are you committed to the business? (Required)

    5) What do you have to lose? (If you have little or nothing to lose, it’s a good time to quit)

    6) How long will your savings last? (If you have enough money saved, it may be beneficial to risk some of your savings)

    7) How much income is your business bringing in?

*Quit your job and go full time at the point where your business is bringing in the minimum that you need to make ends meet.

8] What are you willing to sacrifice?

    9) Do you trust your gut? (And is it usually right?)

    10) Will you dare to do what others only dream of?

    Action steps:

    1) Decide whether you should quit your job.

    2) Decide what criteria you need to fulfill in order to quit your job, and then stick to it. (Don’t chicken out when the time comes)

It is very possible that your job is holding you back from building the kind of business you’re dreaming of, so the sooner you can quit your job, the better. Just be wise about it!

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below. Feel free to let me know if you’ve made any decisions about quitting your job.

    Have a great day!

      Hi Eric,
I’d like to quit my job but not now because by present it is the only source for living.
I am in my 50 years and I am very tired having 30 years full time working experience.
For me personally your lessons are something like a sun in the darkness. I believe in you.
      God bless your family.

Eric, you are correct about ‘benefits’ such as 401k and insurance. The theory is that larger companies can use their size to provide benefits at a cheaper rate than one could acquire alone.

As you illustrated above, this is not always the case. Provided that you use insurance to only cover emergencies and unexpected costs with a reasoable deductable set, insurance can be affordable. The high costs come when you want every small visit to the doctor covered.

Remember, benefits are simply another form of compensation and not a favor from your employer. Ultimately, your paycheck and benefits are paid out of the same source.

      Hi Eric,
Will you please excuse me if I say that you are beating around the bush and it would be better if you strike fast on the subject. And come on! you think your readers even don’t know about the ABCs of computer that you dwelt so much on that. Sorry Eric. Too much of psychological approaches, which gives a ‘deja vu’. If it goes like that. probably you may take years to complete the subject. Readers may conclude you are trying to build volume of subject than the main essence.

Hope you view my comment in a positive way.
      Regards and god bless.

      Hi Eric
I have tried once before to ‘quit the day job’ and was unsuccessful. The ego took a knock or two but I managed to survive and carried on thinking at least I gained knowledge of what ‘not’ to do next time I try it!There will be a ‘next’ time of that I am certain. Most of the lessons you have brought to us are exactly the type of lessons anyone should listen to and take heed from if they wish to start ‘ANY’ business. They are an excellent resource as many other people have said in the many comments posted.I use to be a ‘scout’ in my younger days and their motto is true today as it always has been,’Be Prepared’ and following these lessons of yours is the best preparation anyone can have…

      OK everyone,

I’ve been leaving comments, even though I’ve been playing catchup.

Goal number one was to get caught up with Eric’s tips by the end of this week. Mission accomplished, ahead of schedule.

Goal number two still in place.

Goal number three is a biggie. We need to decide about this lesson’s topic. My FMLA leave is has me scheduled to go back to work on September 1st after the kids go back to school. I can take at least two more weeks if need be, putting the drop dead date for a decision at September 14. But I am going to leave this goals deadline at September 1st.

Keep the advice and prayers coming y’all!

      Thanks,

      Big Dan

Constructive criticism is always welcome 🙂

As I mentioned a few times in the lessons, this is the end of the “foundational” portion of the series.

However, I make no apologies for it. While there are many readers who are familiar with this stuff, many are not. I believe that these principles are too often overlooked by other teachers, and this is a big part of why so many of their followers fail.

In fact, I think that if you took my lessons #2 through #18 and tagged them onto the beginning of almost ANY internet marketing course, it would increase the success rate of the participants. (and I’m not saying it’s because of anything to do with myself, it’s just about the principles.)

Betty, I think you need to get a new web designer if they can’t make your pictures look right, or if they make excuses about it. I’ll be talking about cheap places to outsource in a future lesson.

      Hey Everyone,

Here is my goal number 2 again, since we could definitely use some advice!!

Goal number two. Complete all supplemental research and education by October 1st. This relates to my computer savvy as apposed to real knowledge. I actually went to school for computer science over 25 years ago, but my current experience is limited to the systems I use at work.

By the way, to that point, we are considering a laptop because we would like to expand our flexibility so as not to be so “landlocked” with our work. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. All I think I know for sure is that we want one with a nice large screen and integral camera?

      Thanks all,

      Big Dan

      Eric,

A common mistake that people make time and again is not taking advantage of the experiences and knowledge of “those that have gone before us”. In other words it is short sited and a little myopic to ignore lessons that have already been learned for us in the interest of brevity or misplaced and false urgency.

For a forum like this where few prerequisites are required, it would be a shame for even one to be left behind just because of an inaccurate
assumption about one’s background and abilities.

For any project or endeavor, the foundation is the key. Too often we fail without knowing why, and many times it is because we did not pay the necessary attention to making sure our foundation is strong.
Of course, it is equally unfortunate when our lack of success is due to something as simple as a mis-assessment of our own acumen.

Thanks for being so thorough and covering all the bases for those of us that need or can benefit from it.

      Big Dan

I think the hardest part is taking the plunge and leaving your day job. The trade off is that you cannot 100% focus on your online business. I want to quit SO BAD and have been praying to find a way. But right now, I know its not the best time. I actually want to quit and take my show on the road, particularly from an RV! I’m ready for some fun, but I know I’m going to have to pay for gas, insurance, food, internet, oh yeah, and the RV…darn. I keep praying too! Maybe someday you can read about all my adventures on my blog.

      Hi Eric

Thanks for your valuable tips. Although I have enjoyed the tips in the past, this is the first time I am commenting in your blog.

I have just been so blessed to see how many of your readers are Christians who believe in prayer. I am a 71 yr old pastor, still working full-time in a church, Christian school, mission printing press etc. In fact I am so busy I do not really get much time for my Internet business.

Give up my job? Not until the good Lord takes me home! There is just too much to do. With the aids orphan pandemic in South Africa, millions without proper education and so without a hope and a future, as well as so many other needs – I could never give up and “go fishing”.

The challenge for me is to earn extra income online in order to be able to help underprivileged people financially as well as spiritually. What I can earn may only be a drop in the ocean but at least it will help a few.

May God bless you and all your readers

You might want to take a look at the new Gateway Laptop M series. I just purchased the red one….I did a lot of research before the purchase and it looks like they give you more bang for the buck. After the rebate I paid $649.00 and the laptop has built in web cam, 4GB of memory, and 250GB Hard Drive. Also has many other features such as Lightscribe and CD\DVD player.Best of luck… your going to love a laptop!

Since following your lessons I have found that the comments too have been equally informative. You have made people take action by participating in something that doesn’t seem readily available elsewhere on the internet.People who seemed to have never commented before anywhere are giving out their hopes and dreams.Supporting one another without perhaps realising that they are. It’s offering me a newer perspective.I am not just learning ‘tips’ concerning the internet I am also discovering more about my fellow human beings and how much alike we really all are!

      Hi Eric.
So far i have watched 18 video’s and i can see a teacher with respect and knowledge in these video’s. I have learnt quite a bit from them.

My only question is – When do i get the rest of them (the video i mean), as they appear to have ceased to arrive. Haven’t received any in about two weeks now and the suspense is killing me.

Keep it up, i’m sure you must be the only one on the internet who has anything as helpful as these.

Hi Betty, I’m no spring chicken and I’m a bit of a technophobe as well. As far as web design goes I’m not very imaginative either, but I’ve found that the Yahoo hosting platform coupled with their Sitebuilder software makes everything Soooo simple, it’s like building your webpages in a Word document, pressing Publish, and hey presto it’s there.

jpeg images and most others look great as well.

Why pay a web designer when you will do a better job yourself.
After all, you obviously know what you want judging by this post.

      Good luck,

      Pete.

      Hello Eric,
I have been following your emails and eventually ‘these videos’ for over a year now.
I see clearly the honesty attached to this. In a world where God is put aside by many, several clues have pointed to fact that your are a prayer-bible based believer in Christ Jesus. In fact, that even motivates me to hesitantly open to any email you send. It is a personal motivation as most of ‘our men of God’ have little clues in these sort of things. Well done. Keep it up… other believers are following you.
I however have one question! I bought your AVB almost a year ago and have never used it. Lately, I have been looking for video based affiliate programs without any success. Any help on those? Many thanks and can’t wait to read Lesson #19 and the rest. Cheers

Me and my fiancee are going to moonlight on our businesses until we can quit and do it fulltime/permanent. We figure that we must have 6 months to a year comparable of what we net monthly now, before we can quit….that way, we will have a “buffer/savings/capital” to play with ($ for advertising to grow even bigger/etc).

Once again you have opened my eyes to a new way of looking at my business. I too was at the far right in my thinking of when to quit my job. I figured making twice my paycheck would be the time. I can now see that I will achieve my goals and dreams much sooner than that and will quit much sooner. Thanks for showing us the right way to determine when the time is right for us personally.

In the business models-is it possible to give

      Darling Murthy,

Why don’t you go and find yourself another guru ?

If all that Eric is saying is “deja vu”, why are you here ? If you possess all that knowledge, you should have had a very successful business by now, and shouldn’t have been here. Then still, why are you here?

I’ll tell you why. Because all your attempts at doing business have become “deja vu”. You simply don’t understand the value of what Eric is saying! You can do everything and yet, if you don’t have those “psychological” gut-level understandings, you will not make any headway anywhere – ever!

Eric is giving away these lessons for free. And on top of that, you want to tell him how to do it! Do you own a house or a car? or something that you can call your own and something that you built or acquired with great time, effort and care? Great! Give that away to the public for free. And the next thing I’ll go and do is to dictate to you the way to do it. And mind it if you don’t follow every word I say! You will instantly prove that you are all “psychological” and “deja-vu” !!!

Thank you (but you don’t deserve it – I’m just maintaining a formality),

Very poignant video as I lost my job as a result of the global recession back in September 2008 and decided to work my online Business full time (I had only been doing it part time for 2 months!!)
Whilst my income is nowhere near what I was earning yet, I am happier than I have ever been. I am lucky that I have a very supportive wife and kids.
I am so looking forward to 2009 as I believe my Business will take off in the not to distant future.

Do you know everything? You come close enough for me. I have never followed anyones plan this long, so you’re doing something right! That info on the 401k and insurance was excellent also ! The transmission on my car blew this week and I had to miss 4 days of work. I had to decide between fixing the trans or renting a car all 5 days. I couldn’t afford to do. I still have a car note. If I had been working from home, it wouldn’t of mattered. So I am all ears with your lessons. Thank you!!! and most of all thank you God.

Very good lesson. I have a unique situation I only work 6 to 8 months out of the year for the last 3 years, I have had some health issues which keep me from full time employment. So over the past three winters I have purchased quite a few online programs. I have learned a lot from each and every one of them. But I have to say that I have learned a lot from you here for free, I only wished that I found out about your lessons earlier on. That’s alright just another learning block right? Still nothing ventured nothing learned right? I also have purchased your push button marketer to me it’ started out a little complicated but I got it now and what a plus it is. For now I must go but my opinion if anybody can in anyway go full time on your own it is worth it 1,000 times over. Good day to all
