LESSON#25: Changing Name Servers & Getting to Know Cpanel

By | October 4, 2008

A couple lessons ago, we went through the process of registering a domain name. Then in the previous lesson, we signed up for web hosting.

Now its time to put those things together, to make sure our domain is pointing to our web hosting, and then begin to familiarize ourselves with the web hosting control panel…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • I recommend registering your domain with a domain registrar other than your web hosting company.

  • DNS = Domain Name System (on the video I said Domain Name Server, which is also a commonly held definition for the acronym)

  • Your name servers should be listed in the welcome email from your web host.

  • Log into your domain account, and change the DNS to your assigned name servers

  • (Video shows how to set up an account using WHM – the administrative side of Cpanel, which is included with Hostgator reseller accounts)

  • After you change the DNS in your domain account, it can take anywhere from a few minutes up to a couple days for it to propagate throughout the web.

  • To log into the cpanel for your account, you would go to:

    http://yourdomain.com/cpanel or http://yourdomain.com:2082
    or https://yourdomain.com:2083 (secure)

If your domain’s DNS hasn’t resolved to your hosting account yet, you can access your control panel using the server’s IP address in place of the domain.

    Action step:

    1) Set your domain’s DNS to point to your hosting account

    2) Look around in your Cpanel control panel, and familiarize yourself with it

In the next lesson, I’ll show you how to set up email account(s) on your own domain.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below 🙂

    Have a great day!

      Hello!
Like everything in life we have good and bad news:
Good news: “Beat the Recession” new system is a lesson for us about how Eric is thinking as a marketer; he saw an opportunity and jumped in the middle of it, good for you Eric!
Bad news: getting a lesson at 2 weeks, 75 lessons left x 2 weeks = 150 weeks. Almost all of us will miss milestones, planed dead lines, vision is in jeopardy. We didn’t know that we will need one year to complete 100 lessons, to set up the plan accordingly.
I will continue to follow the lessons, because the quality is very good, but I am not a happy camper. My dream to get out of debt until 15 Dec. is out of question now.

Hello! Eric I have 2 questions:
1)which is the cheapest video recorder you recommend to create videos
2)do you have a tutorial about how to create videos, editing etc (I have Camtasia studio 3, never use it!)

      thanks

      Hey Eric,
Just wondering! you have mentioned the resellers account a few times now. Do you plan on discussing how to start a business selling sites or have anything in an ebook already?

      Thanks
      Roland

P.S. congrats to melissa and you with #4 on the way

Don’t worry, I’ll get the lessons going faster soon. I’ve had a bad cold this week so I haven’t been able to record any.

There is a free one out there called CamStudio. However, if you own Camtasia you should use it, as it is much better than the free one (I use Camtasia Studio 3 for all of Eric’s Tips videos). I will most likely do a lesson about making screen capture videos.

I would try copying and pasting the username and password rather than typing it in. Sometimes ones look like lowercase L’s, etc.

      They do ahave support available.

I highly recommend having your own website if you want to have an online business.

      Hi Eric!
Thanks for the update on the Illuminate Conference – GREAT stuff…! I signed up for the 2009 announcements & received your confirmation link with bonuses. Unfortunately, something happened with the link before I was able to download anything. Can you please email me a link directly to them?!? Thanks Eric!!!

      Thanks Eric,
YES a lesson about making screen capture videos is needed.
By the way, I also have Dave Guindon software: CamStudioPro. You know this product, may I use this one as well. I am asking because on Videos I really am a beginner, I don’t even have recording camera,(I have only a logitech camera I use for Skype, I do not think this is enough) and I really need to start creating videos not just using others videos. I need some tutorial for beginners for Videos.
      Regards

Praise the Lord! I finally was able to see lesson #25. I sure was surprised after all the trouble I had trying to see it. I sure hope we don’t encounter any more difficulties. Thank you Eric. God bless you.

      Hi Eric,

I just registered my domain name with Hostgator. As I wasn’t quite sure of any
specific topic of interest in mind,I picked
      “maximumincometips.com” as my domain name.

Could you please comment on this one?

      Thanks, and God Bless,

I think MaximumIncomeTips is a very good name for a newsletter or a blog. If it were for a paid product, like an ebook, I’d say it wasn’t the best name. The reason is because people expect “tips” to be free (ie. Eric’s Tips), so it makes it an attractive site for them to look for free information… which is great for newsletter/blog. But for a paid product, you would want something that sounds more significant than “tips”, such as Generator, Program, System, Course, Blueprint, etc.

      Hi Eric,
I have a problem with Cpanel. When I go to try and sign on to my website I get a warning that says make sure that numbers 2978 SSL & 2077 are not blocked or something like that. Any suggestions? I have Norton 360 on my computer.

      Thanks

What are you trying to do? Are you trying to get your WordPress blog back? Which template?

I think your site looks pretty good. Did you make it with Xsite pro?

You need to modify your title tags so that each page has its own title, with keywords in it. I’ll talk more about that when we get to the SEO section.

And you definitely should add a lead capture system and start building a list using a service such as Aweber (I’ll be covering this in the lessons too)

The title is what’s inside your “title” tags within the header of the HTML file. The title text shows up at the very top of your browser, in the bar ABOVE your toolbar and address bar.

Are those the name servers that were assigned to you by Hostgator? If so, then your domain will be live on your hostgator account as soon as those name server changes propogate (within 24-48 hours).

Eric, thank you very much for the coupon code. I wouldn’t have been able to get started without it. As is, I started with the hatchling and hope to upgrade to reseller at a later date. Will you still be able to get the credit for that?

This might not be the best moneymaker idea, but it gets me started so I can follow along and continue with the lessons. And, I am interested in organic and green pet ideas and products.

      THANK YOU!

Again, wish we had found Eric’s Tips before we did our site…. I am truly kicking myself at this point…. I would love to switch hosting providers but I have put so much work into our site by now that I don’t want to have to start over again (we upgraded from regular hosting to e-commerce & I had to redo everything). Any suggestions?

Hi Eric, I’m now a Gator!!! Cpanel is really cool. I’ve never seen it…I have installed many Appache and Websphere webservers but always do the configuration by hand. Cpanel is very cool and I can’t wait to see how everything comes together.
All I can think of is the HDTV commercial where the whole family and the flea on the cat all say…WOOOOOOOOOOOOW! at the same time.
      This is good stuff.

      Hi Eric,

I basically did this whole process backwards. I started with an idea and contacted a web developer. Then I bought a domain. Now I have no idea what’s going on. I bought it from Godaddy.com. Do you recommend using them for webhosting? I don’t see Cpanel on there at all.

      Hi Eric,
I am having problems trying to get my DNS to point to my server. I have been able to get to (My Product) but I haven’t been able to go any further. What changes must I make because the pages have been updated. I stopped the video at each step you made in your presentation to be sure that I would not miss one step and become fustrated when I could not complete the process. I am an old dog and it is hard to teach us new tricks. I have the process broken into 10 steps, but when the site was updated your steps did not follow. I Need Help. If you tell me to do something I do it and if you don’t mention it I stop thinking about it. You said stop spending your money buying stuff and I have stopped. You say buy this, I buy this. I did not take long for me to see why you were giving this course free but it is the method I have been looking for, for a long time. Show me something that makes sense and I am will to pay you for it. I am tired of paying for something and getting nothing in return and having to get my refund in less than 10 days. If this works out and I hope it will, I will be able to pay for my daughters education and it is not cheap!

      Hi Eric,
I am not able to login to Cpanel and Hostgator advised me to supply them with a scanned ID,Passport or Driver’s license as well as the last 4 digits of my credit card. You did not mention this in your lesson. I received the welcome email and they did’nt mention such instruction to activate my account. A couple of nights ago, a website ownerI joined phoned me from Los Angeles and said he needed my creditcard number in order for me to get started. That same night he tried to withdraw a +-$1000 from my account. I just want to know if this is safe, because I’m a bit sceptic after this incident.Luckily my Bank phoned me early the next morning and I blocked the transaction.
