LESSON #26: Email Address on Your Own Domain

By | October 24, 2008

In the past few lessons, we’ve registered a domain name, and then we acquired web hosting.

Today we’re going to start putting your domain to good use, by setting up an email address on it…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Most people are still using freebie email accounts.

  • Don’t use cheesy email addresses!

  • Why it’s important to have an email address on your own domain:

    1) It looks more professional. This is more important than you may think. You want to invoke TRUST.

    2) You have ultimate control of what’s delivered to your inbox. You can avoid having to search through junkmail folders for important messages, or you can add high levels of filtering.

    3) It can improve your outgoing email deliverability rate. This is an important concept for list building. An increase of a few percent can make a difference of thousands of dollars of profit.

  • (Video shows how to set up an email account via Cpanel)

  • (Video shows how to check email via the web… ie. http://yourdomain.com:2095 )

  • (How to configure Microsoft Outlook for POP3)

  • (How to set up an email forwarder)

  • Forwarders allow you to advertise or give out a certain email address without actually having to manage another email account.

    Action step:

    1) Set up an email account or a forwarder on your own domain (if you don’t yet have one).

    2) Test it and make sure it works.

Important Note: If you’ve changed your primary email address, be sure to update your subscriptions such as Eric’s Tips. For Eric’s Tips, just click the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of any email from me… but on the following page do NOT unsubscribe. Instead simply change your email address to your new address and save it.

Now that you’re all set up with your email, it’s time to turn our attention to building your website starting in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below 🙂

    Have a great day!

      Hi Eric,
Thanks for again another great lesson. Somehow I thought having a gmail account is respectable but I will follow the action step soon and update my subscription to Eric’s tips newsletter soon thereafter…
Other points I appreciate about your lessons are your solid recommendations for building a real online business. Now I have realized that for a newcomer like myself, it is more productive to invest in real business opportunities like the domain seller business you have recommended earlier. Having this one in place, one can then learn online strategies to maximize opportunities. Rather than buying internet marketing stuffs that purports to boost your online earning with lightning speed!Judging from experience, it is so easy for a beginner to be tempted to buy the next internet marketing training course to make money in affiliate programs and everything in the internet; forgetting that it takes time to really learn and apply those strategies… Thank you for making that emphasis on us building a real product for a lasting online business opportunity. God bless!

      Hey Eric,

This was another very informative lesson. I agree with you 100%. If you are going to give yourself a professional appearance online, you need to have an email set up on your own domain.

The freebie email accounts are great if you want to sign up for mailing lists and you aren’t looking to promote your website.

The name recognition and credibility that you build up online is critical to your success. If you establish a positive reputation at the beginning, this will stay with you and help you to become very successful online.

Eric, thanks for another great lesson.

If you do not have a domain yet and must use a free email provider, use gmail. Gmail conjures a much more positive brand recognition than ‘hotmail’ and the like. Just be sure to use a more formal address such as firstname.lastname@gmail.com. If have seen this technique used with success in a professional setting. Again, this is if you do not have a hosted domain yet (or if your domain is cheesy).

      Hi Eric,
I do have my own domain email address but was actually thinking of changing it to a Gmail account because I see so many marketers with a Gmail address. I though that they knew something I did’nt. I thought it was to avoid spam. Your advice is timely. I will use my Gmail account for newsletters and optins so my primary account does’nt get overwhelming as it is now.
I’ve looked at your Trading System but I don’t think I have the personality for it. It sounds a little risky.
Maybe a post from you so we could discuss it would help.
Do you have an affiliate program for it? I’d consider promoting it on my blog.

Thanks and keep up the great work

Hi Eric, I know what you mean, in fact I was using my own domain email address before I switching to use gmail, why? primary reasons, email spams. you know every email stored in my domain account cost me money and spam emails actually wasting my time of deleting unwanted emails. I don’t want that to happen.

for a gmail account for instance they have an in built spam filters and there is no cost of using it. More importantly I don’t need to worry about disk space which I got charged if it is oversized. so why I am using freebie account. I know there is spam arrest type of thing to block spams, but you know it cost money as well. well anyway, your email forwarding probably is one solution to the spam problems but if I forward it to a gmail account, when I reply my subscribers will know this is a free email account anyway…

after Eric, spamming is a pain issue!
thanks for your tips by the way…

      Hi Eric,

First of all, let me say a big thank you for the FREE lessons. They are a great help to those of us who are just starting out with internet marketing.

The title of your latest mailing had me smiling (is your email a PROFESSIONAL email address?).

I must say that I use a free email address purely for subscribing to newsletters and would never think to use it for my marketing emails.

Some of the solo ad email addresses I have received from some who are using them for marketing emails are, quite frankly, unbelievable, for instance, ones like pinkfluffyfairy@xxxxxxx.com or rabidrabbit@xxxxx.com.

In all honesty, would you take people with email addresses like that seriously?

Eric, you have some valuable lessons on offer here and I would be very surprised that those who do take your advice does not make some success at internet marketing.

Keep up the good work. I will keep an eye out for your further emails.

      Kind Regards,

      Gary

Hi Eric, I have been following your lessons. I would like to ask you if you have ever tried to sell a physical product not a digital or ebook product? I have a website that sells costume teddy bears. I don’t have a front end product or back end product just the bears. Do you have any suggestions for someone who is selling a physical product? Thank you for your attention to this issue.

I’d say Gmail is respectable in most circles, its just not as good as your own domain. As Loren mentions below, you can get away with Gmail if you use a formal address.

Keep in mind there are things you can do to eliminate spam from your account, such as spam assasson, box trapper, or a paid service like spam arrest.

There is always risk involved in trading, but the method Dave teaches shows how to totally minimize the risk and manage it by the numbers.

I thought about posting about it on Erics Tips, but I was afraid it might actually be TOO effective and take everyone’s focus away from Internet marketing while we’re in the middle of my lessons. But since I’m advertising it in the sidebar now, I suppose it would have made just as much sense to write about it.

I have sold physical products on Ebay, and I have also sold physical infoproducts (CD’s, DVD’s).

For a specialty ecommerce store such as yours, I would recommend getting this:

Stomping the Search Engines from StomperNet.

Brad Fallon and Andy Jenkins make a killing from such stores (Brad sells wedding favors, and Andy sells swords, among other things…). They’re really on the cutting edge of that type of Internet marketing, and they specialize in optimizing your store for success and getting free traffic from the search engines.

      Thanks, Eric,
I needed this lesson because I have to get rid of the domain address I am currently using for the newsletters I get. No I wont cuss but I want to, Someone stole my domain address and sent it to a lot of list servers and I’m getting scads of spam. So, it reminded me that I hadn’t changed the address for you. It is changed now. So, even the domain addresses are not safe. But, we can block a specific address as a throw-away.
      Yeah, this lesson was necessary.
      Thanks again.

Eric, you are correct on using email on your own domain. And the name also should make sense not some non-sensical name or numbers.

I use free email to sign up to newsletters.

      Hi! Eric,
I have emails with domain, but I cannot see where in Eric’s tips I can change my email, this being a free blog/newslwter we don’t have accounts.
Anyway I’ll create new email for my new website with the domain in them as well.

Thanks, YES you are the one who teach useful details and how to…, about all components of a business, the rest of the world just tell you “what you need to do”, like “you need a squeeze page”, well, thank you, I already know, but how to, which elements will attract visitors and so and so.

This is why I am here, you know to teach, and everything is coming from a good, solid, and success proved experience.

By the way, this is why I like “country first” vs. “spread the wealth” = experiments ideas coming from nothing.

When you set it up in Outlook, the username would be the full email address that you created on your domain. Depending on the settings of your web host, you might need to use a “+” in the username instead of “@”. But usually the “@” will work.

Yes, it is a full email account and you can send from it either via the webmail platform, or via SMTP (SMTP is the sending side of POP3. If you set it up in Outlook, it will send through the account via SMTP).

The only case where you would not be able to send FROM it, would be if you only set up a forwarder without creating an email account. However, Outlook also allows you to essentially “spoof” your own email address, so you could actually make emails appear to be from yourname@yourdomain.com even if they were being sent via yourname@anotherdomain.com (although some of the recipients of your email would still see yourname@anotherdomain.com due to safety mechanisms on their own email client).

      Hi Eric,
The way you teach us shows you’re one of the few internet marketers who really know what they are doing – quite a contrast to the many who are only interested in selling us their products, and nothing else.

I’d like to extend a note of deep appreciation for the kind things you do -like sending us free teaching videos.

May God bless your life mightily and prosper you in all that you do.

I seen so many web site owners they have their own domain (website) and email address but they use free emails like hotmail, yahoo or gmail , may be they want to save the space because if you start to submit email address , so more then 80% of email are garbage emails. But if you have good space from hosting provider you should use your own domain , you can empty the mailbox anytime.

      Hi,

Given the growing support for ‘cloud computing’ the bad effect of using say gmail.com is probably not so great as it once was.

What is important is the name you choose hotdude96 for example might be a fun name for personal email but does not convey a professional image.

On the other hand if you take advantage of the gmail’s Address Plus function you can have email addresses such as

      johndoe.acmeincATgmail.com

      or

      sales.acmeincATgmail.com

Which are probably ok for small & medium sized businesses.

7 or 8 yrs ago people might have been impressed if you owned your own domain, but I doubt that there’s any significant status value these days.

      Eric,

How do you decide what message rules to make?

I think I’m guilty of message rule overkill – I have over 120!

I probably have too many subcategories. For instance, instead of having 1 rule for all social websites, I have a rule for MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc…

      Any suggestions?

Are you referring to changing web hosts? If you’re moving from one Cpanel host to another, it’s pretty easy. If you’re moving to a different platform it can be trickier if you have databases. I’m not planning on covering it in a session, but my recommended web host (Hostgator) will actually move your site for you if you switch to them.
