LESSON #26: Email Address on Your Own Domain

By | October 24, 2008

In the past few lessons, we’ve registered a domain name, and then we acquired web hosting.

Today we’re going to start putting your domain to good use, by setting up an email address on it…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Most people are still using freebie email accounts.

  • Don’t use cheesy email addresses!

  • Why it’s important to have an email address on your own domain:

    1) It looks more professional. This is more important than you may think. You want to invoke TRUST.

    2) You have ultimate control of what’s delivered to your inbox. You can avoid having to search through junkmail folders for important messages, or you can add high levels of filtering.

    3) It can improve your outgoing email deliverability rate. This is an important concept for list building. An increase of a few percent can make a difference of thousands of dollars of profit.

  • (Video shows how to set up an email account via Cpanel)

  • (Video shows how to check email via the web… ie. http://yourdomain.com:2095 )

  • (How to configure Microsoft Outlook for POP3)

  • (How to set up an email forwarder)

  • Forwarders allow you to advertise or give out a certain email address without actually having to manage another email account.

    Action step:

    1) Set up an email account or a forwarder on your own domain (if you don’t yet have one).

    2) Test it and make sure it works.

Important Note: If you’ve changed your primary email address, be sure to update your subscriptions such as Eric’s Tips. For Eric’s Tips, just click the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of any email from me… but on the following page do NOT unsubscribe. Instead simply change your email address to your new address and save it.

Now that you’re all set up with your email, it’s time to turn our attention to building your website starting in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below 🙂

    Have a great day!

The viewer itself is from Camtasia, and they enable the ability to drop in your own pre-load graphic or movie. The “viewer” that you see before you click to watch the movie is just a static image that I made in photoshop. When you click that image, it brings up the real player.

      Hello Eric,
I got on my cPanel today, and I noticed that you have a new control panel layout. I like it is more intuitive, I have to play a little more with it. I like that it is a video icon in top when I click on different icons from control panel, but I cannot hear them, I don’t know why, you are still working on it?
As usual you are inventive and in top of new technology.

      Hi Eric.

I am looking at using xsite pro to build my website. From what I can see though, it can’t be used with macs. Do you know if there is a way around this, or can you suggest an alternative software to use for mac users?

      Thank you

      Hi Eric
Thanks from me too for the awesome free tutorials.

Wendy is correct. Google Mail Fetcher is awesome.
You dont have to go to your own domain to get your mail.
In fact Google Labs are a great source of information, applications etc and its all free!

      Hi!
I vote today, now I am back to my work.

I spent more time on cPanel I have from Host Gator, I like the new layout. And the templates are absolutely great.

I have and I work for 2 years now with xSitePro and I like a lot, I don’t see any reason to change the tool especially because:
      * Site Builder and Site Studio don’t work with add-on domains
      * I really am handy with xSitePro

Because I like the templates on cPanel I have some questions:
      1) it is possible to import a template from cPanel on xSite Pro? How? (I used to import Joel’s templates on xSite Pro and worked very well)
      2) if the import is possible, the template in xSite Pro will be customizable as well? I hope YES because the customization is part of xSite Pro functionality.

      Let me know
      Thanks
      Michaela

      Dear Eric,

I think the BEST way to build a good website is to have all related functions in one internet builder. I mean you get your own email address, marketing tool, written salescopy, website builder, payment setup, opt in list, contact list, recommended traffic tool and much much more.I use this software to build my own website http://www.easyartscraftstips.com.

Any template that you can import into XSitePro can be customized in XSitePro, but I’m not sure what you mean by importing it from Cpanel?

      Eric,
in the new layout of cPanel (a have it from my hostgator account) there is a button now for free templates (4,000 or so of them) they are excellent. My question was if I can import one of them to my eSitePro.
      Thanks

Once again, you have saved the day. I was finally able to get all that accomplished and thanx to you have the domain, the hosting provider, set nameservers, and e-mail account. WOW, that was a lot and some of it was a little tough for this newbie. But once again, you helped me understand all of that stuff. You are a great teacher, Eric. Thanx so much for all your help. You ROCK!!!!

Good lesson. I have one email address on my site for “info@mybatehsets.com” but I think I will make another one – “Margaret@mybathesets.com”. I agree that is a great idea and much more credible – not to mention more professional. Thanks for all the valuable information. Margaret.

I’ve just got a question. As you can see, I have a .co.uk account (which you can’t even enter in the Getgater application form). I am considering getting a new .com domain name but what do I do with the affiliates I already have? Do I need to contact them one by one to change my url details or is there a more efficient way?

      Reply
    17. Eric Post author

you can silently redirect your old domain to your new one, so it should not affect your affiliates at all. Most domain registrars allow you to do this, so you wouldn’t even need to keep paying for hosting for the old domain. If your affiliate program is actually running on the domain itself (ie. your domain is actually a part of the affiliate’s affiliate link), then it will be a bit more work, but still very do-able.

By the way, hostgator CAN host your .co.uk domain. You just need to click “I will use My Existing Domain and update My Nameservers only.” on the first step of the order form.

Thank you SO much. I’ve never used Outlook before ’cause I don’t understand the procedure. I had a lot of trouble with lavabit. But since this lesson I have been successful. I even changed my email contact above. Now lets see if I can get this VERY valuable info. Thanks. Since starting an On-line business, my learning curve has “flat lined” my business. You have helped and I shall be sure to give back some of your valuable assistance. Chris

I have been following your videos & pausing them so that I can copy what you are doing.

However, when trying to create a new email acccount, I don’t get a successful message like you do.

I get Account created. The email account xxxxx@xxxxxxxx.com with the login The disk write test failed. You may have exceeded your quota, or the disk is full. and password xxxxxx with a quota of 100 Megabytes was successfully created.

Could you please advise what’s wrong or what I am doing wrong?

      Thnx

      one of 3 possibilities…

      1) your host’s server is full (unlikely)
      2) your hosting account is full.
      3) the 100MB that you chose for your email account exceeds the available quota for your hosting account.

On your main cpanel when you log in, you should be able to see your account’s quota…

I spoke with Hostgator support & they advised me that I would have to go into the WHM & assign a package, however I don’t remember any of your videos explaining how to do that…

On the main page when you log into your cpanel, you should be able to see if you’ve used your disk quota. If you have, you may need to delete some stuff, or upgrade to a bigger account. If you’ve still got space available, make sure the limits of the email account you’re attempting to create will fit within your remaining quota.
If that doesn’t solve it, contact your web host and provide as much specifics as possible.

      Hey Eric,
I know you’ve been very busy, but I was wondering if you could explain to me what Hostgator Support meant by going into the WHM & assigning a package. I still haven’t figured out what they mean.
I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide regarding this matter.

Your WHM is your reseller control panel. A package is the “limits” of the site you are setting up. For example, the amount of storage and bandwidth that you are assigning to that particular domain. Here is a tutorial about managing packages:

Domain email would be better in a perfect world without spam and email filters.

I use only a Hotmail address to communicate with clients.

I have 24 email addresses between domain ones and free ones and I was tired of my address being blocked by email filters, rejected, or simply dissapearing.

I even attemped to use email aliases with Gmail to masquerade my gmail address as a domain email and created an alias for each people I emailed to track spammers and delete them (that I thought would be the perfect solution! the emais looked like send out from my domain, but Gmail was the sender, so his reputation made all my email to the inbox), but after creating 20 of these, my Gmail account suffered a technical glitch and I couldn’t log in to it for 3 months.

Gmail and Hotmail never get rejected and are very resistant to spam (spambox and spamassassin are crap). It is impossible to compete with the storage and capabilities they offer.

I can live with what some ignorant people could think about people using a free email address because all my emails get delivered.

Hi Eric! This was a great lesson and I like the idea of a domain account better than hotmail (live.com) While I am doing this course with you, I have put up a site on http://www.myclickbankbusiness.com to learn quickly what was involved. Andrew and Steven got me going with http://affiliatemarketersystems.com.
Now I’m getting back to doing my lessons with you and I want to know if I should stay at one hosting company OR use Host gator for what we are doing???

      Thanks,

      Hi Eric,

If I have a bunch of domains – say one for each ebook I am selling….I have setup a support@ email address for each…

Should I have a personal email account on my company site , or have one on each site and forward them all to my company site??? How is the best way to set this up do you think?

      Thanks!!!

If you have a reason to keep the businesses separate, you could have emails on each of them. But in general, I would recommend trying to keep things simple for yourself. I would just keep your main support email and your personal email address on your company domain.

and yes, you could use forwarders… I’ve done that a lot.

I’d say it just depends on whether you’re happy with your current host, and if they’re providing everything you need.

It is important to have a good host, so if you have concerns I’d switch to Hostgator, but if not you’re probably OK.
