LESSON #26: Email Address on Your Own Domain

By | October 24, 2008

In the past few lessons, we’ve registered a domain name, and then we acquired web hosting.

Today we’re going to start putting your domain to good use, by setting up an email address on it…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Most people are still using freebie email accounts.

  • Don’t use cheesy email addresses!

  • Why it’s important to have an email address on your own domain:

    1) It looks more professional. This is more important than you may think. You want to invoke TRUST.

    2) You have ultimate control of what’s delivered to your inbox. You can avoid having to search through junkmail folders for important messages, or you can add high levels of filtering.

    3) It can improve your outgoing email deliverability rate. This is an important concept for list building. An increase of a few percent can make a difference of thousands of dollars of profit.

  • (Video shows how to set up an email account via Cpanel)

  • (Video shows how to check email via the web… ie. http://yourdomain.com:2095 )

  • (How to configure Microsoft Outlook for POP3)

  • (How to set up an email forwarder)

  • Forwarders allow you to advertise or give out a certain email address without actually having to manage another email account.

    Action step:

    1) Set up an email account or a forwarder on your own domain (if you don’t yet have one).

    2) Test it and make sure it works.

Important Note: If you’ve changed your primary email address, be sure to update your subscriptions such as Eric’s Tips. For Eric’s Tips, just click the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of any email from me… but on the following page do NOT unsubscribe. Instead simply change your email address to your new address and save it.

Now that you’re all set up with your email, it’s time to turn our attention to building your website starting in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below 🙂

    Have a great day!

Yeah it kind of depends on where you’re hosted and what version of cpanel is on your server. But the email setup is fundamentally the same.

But I do appreciate the heads up, and when I’m done with the 100 lessons I will probably go back and update some of the videos, so I will keep note of this one!

      Hi Eric,

I also subscribed to Getresponse. What is the difference between Domain webmail and Getresponse?

      Thank.

Getresponse is a 3rd party autoresponder and email management solution (I use Aweber). That’s what you use for building and communicating with your opt-in list(s). I’ll be covering that in depth later on.

Your domain webmail is just an email account on your domain.

      Hi Eric,

I hear what you are saying about my email address … and had a laugh! NO! I don’t use this address for any business oriented communications. It’s an old address I use for receiving expert “lessons” such as yours. Your lesson today has confirmed my set up so far!

Hello Eric… ok, you got me 🙂 But I have quite a few other email addresses, which are not from a freemail account. In a forum or blog, I prefer to use a freemail address…

I’m very interested in the “Crazy Resale Rights – 7 DAYS ONLY!”, but I have a question:
Do I need an Aweber Account for that?
Did you use Adwords to receive so much traffic?

I hope you can answer me, before it’s too late.

      Thank you very much.

      All the best,
      Arne

You don’t need an aweber account, but I do recommend it!

I received traffic from various sources. Affiliates, PPC, and my own lists.

      Hi Eric,
I recently purchased your Trading Pro systems but have not done much with it yet.
      Things still seem very complicated.
But your tips are very handy.
Due to working long hours it is difficult to find time for internet work and I am usually tired when I do, so it can be a slow process for me.
I recently read lesson #26 and created an email at my domain using my real 1st and last name. I am not sure if I should use my last name because it may be too long or difficult for some people to spell..? Also my domain name is the english translation for my Lakota name, as I am Native American, with review added to the end. But I am not sure if it is the best idea as people do not understand where I am coming from or it can sound misleading.
Do you think that I should register another domain name and then use both my first and last name for email or just my first name..?
Also I edited my personal email to my domain for Eric’s tips. Will they all be sent to new address or will I have to transfer the other ones..?
Your time and comments are very much appreciated..!

      Thank You
      Daniel

      Hi Eric,

well… gmail works soooo much better than my “professional” accounts, especially lately.

Webmail is pretty clumsy (and I refuse to use Outlook), and as of late, impossibly overrun with spam. I love my gmail spam filters. They rarely err anymore, and it’s not too hard to take a peek into the spam area every now and then to make sure nothing has gotten trapped in there..

I do use the professional emails occasionally and for specific purposes, but I’m trying to move everything to gmail…

      Backwards?

Then again, maybe I should split test it…

As far as the email address, simpler is usually better if you’re using it for business purposes.

For the domain, it just depends on what you’re using it for. If you’re using it to sell the Trading Pro System, I’d recommend registering a domain specifically for it.

You can edit the email address of your subscription by clicking the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of any email from me. But then don’t unsubscribe… just update your email address.

      Thanks

      Hi Eric,

Very informative video. I have a question. If we use the email forwarder then how do we reply to the sender. In your example, if I send email to info@ericxxx.com, it is forwarded to let’s say eric@hotmail.com. Now if you want to reply me back, how would you do that.

      Thanks
      Rajesh

    17. Eric Post author

Generally speaking, your reply would come from whatever email address the email is being forwarded to. So forwarding works in situations where that is acceptable.

For example, suppose you have email addresses like:

      affiliates@example.com
      eric@example.com
      sales@example.com

You could have all of them forwarded to a general mailbox such as info@example.com and it would be socially acceptable to receive a reply from such an address.

Technically it is also possible to forge the header to make the reply appear that it is coming from a different email address (ie. the one they originally mailed to), but I don’t recommend it, as it may be viewed as spam.

Hi Eric ~ Thanks for the videos! I’m learning alot and slowly working through them. I set up my email account with hostgator and then forwarded the email to a gmail account set up just for this domain. The test emails that I send go thru to the gmail account but do not show in the domain email account. According to the instructions in cpanel, they should still be there also. Does it matter as long as they go to the gmail account? I can’t find anything that I did wrong or that I can change.

Usually there is an option to leave the emails on the server in addition to the forwarding. But I would not worry about it, unless you need a backup copy of your emails on the server.

So, now what? Should I start checking my email @mydomain.com for Eric’s Tips? Your lessons give me one GOOD reason to check my free account. Just kidding. I actually have two free accounts. Its my way of careful selection. My first gets stuff I want to check out, if I like it, I send my better address. But, you already knew that, you quit sending email to my other address around lesson, oh, say, 10.

Yes Coy is my first name. I do sometimes get emails indicating that they think I’m a guy but I’m not. Ann is my middle name. I haven’t really decided on a business yet so I’m not too worried about a professional name yet. I do keep it in the back of my mind. I have several websites that were pre-made and I haven’t done anything about them because I wasn’t real thrilled with them. Needless to say money spent and lost for the learning curve. I did purchase PBM which I hope to use in a profitable way. Thanks to your lessons I am learning even more. Thanks again Coy Ann

Ive been looking for some time for the infomation on emails, DNS, hosting and Domains. Most of what I found (until I found your site) just told me that these things needed to be done, not how to do it. Your last few lessons have hugely helped. Thank you for putting this series together.

That is an unusual one. You may need to contact your web host, as they may need to restart the mail server. Have you tried connecting via:

      http://example.com:2095 ?

Use your email address and password that you set up.

Thanks so much for your lesson that has helped me finally setup my Microsoft Outlook account in my desktop.

According to Hostgator’s Configure Mail Client, “IMAP email access coordinates between the server and you mail application. Messages that have been read/deleted/replied-to will show as read/deleted/replied-to both on the server and in the mail application. POP3 does not coordinate with the server. Messages marked as read/deleted/replied-to in the mail application will not show as read/deleted/replied-to on the server. This means that future downloads of your inbox or other mailboxes with POP3 will show all messages as unread.”

Other than that, do you know anything else difference between POP3 and IMAP?

Thanks a lot for your quick reply and the link!

I already picked IMAP and will test it out to see it is good or not.

By the way what do you mean “not leaving a copy of it here”? Do you mean that after POP3 retrieves the email off of your server, your webmail account will erase that email?

      Reply
    35. Eric Post author

      Ok cool 🙂

Correct, when Pop3 retrieves an email off the server, it will no longer appear in webmail. I believe there is an option to leave a copy of it on the server though. But in that case, things can get confusing because it’s hard to keep track of which emails you’ve already read. But supposedly IMAP prevents that problem.

I am having trouble with my reseller account. I have not yet learned how to set up the websites for all of the domains I want to host myself. I do plan to have email accounts for each site as you suggest, but I need help setting everything up. I just cannot get enough detailed help from the Hostgator techs. I have not found what I need in your “How to be a Reseller” report yet. Please advise, if you will.

      Pardon me ….

I NEVER use any of my professional email addresses to sign up for anything online. There is just too much spam generated to those addresses used. At least that is what my testing has proven. For that reason I even quit using addresses with domain name and only use gmail.

Business, however, is done with professional email. And, I might say, rarely gets any spam.

So, it’s understandable why your subscriber list has non-business addresses.
