LESSON #26: Email Address on Your Own Domain

By | October 24, 2008

In the past few lessons, we’ve registered a domain name, and then we acquired web hosting.

Today we’re going to start putting your domain to good use, by setting up an email address on it…

Main points:

  • Most people are still using freebie email accounts.

  • Don’t use cheesy email addresses!

  • Why it’s important to have an email address on your own domain:

    1) It looks more professional. This is more important than you may think. You want to invoke TRUST.

    2) You have ultimate control of what’s delivered to your inbox. You can avoid having to search through junkmail folders for important messages, or you can add high levels of filtering.

    3) It can improve your outgoing email deliverability rate. This is an important concept for list building. An increase of a few percent can make a difference of thousands of dollars of profit.

  • (Video shows how to set up an email account via Cpanel)

  • (Video shows how to check email via the web… ie. http://yourdomain.com:2095 )

  • (How to configure Microsoft Outlook for POP3)

  • (How to set up an email forwarder)

  • Forwarders allow you to advertise or give out a certain email address without actually having to manage another email account.

    Action step:

    1) Set up an email account or a forwarder on your own domain (if you don’t yet have one).

    2) Test it and make sure it works.

Important Note: If you’ve changed your primary email address, be sure to update your subscriptions such as Eric’s Tips. For Eric’s Tips, just click the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of any email from me… but on the following page do NOT unsubscribe. Instead simply change your email address to your new address and save it.

Now that you’re all set up with your email, it’s time to turn our attention to building your website starting in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below 🙂

    Have a great day!

This email address is not a professional one. I thought about creating a professional one just today. Here you are teaching on the same subject.

Thanks again for a great lesson.

      G’day Eric,

Another great lesson mate. I agree with you on having your own emails from your hosted domain, and in this lesson I learned a great deal from you, least of all creating my own email from my hosting account and I had no idea it was that easy. I guess we take for granted those free ones sometimes. Oh and I don’t have that cheesy free email anymore if you haven’t yet noticed 🙂 I don’t know if you agree with me or not, but for me I’ve associated this lesson with lesson 22 & 23 which covered branding for your business. I believe if your email address is an extension of your domain then this would leave more of an impression on the minds of your customers rather than having an email address that is not similar or familiar at all with your domain. What do you think?

Thanks for your time and your assistance.

      Hi Erik,
speaking of spam. I got phished through facebook a week and a half ago. My new email is posted but I lost all my emails (1200) and all my contacts (400), thankfully I had printed out the contacts in July, still lost some that I have added since then. I thought yahoo and facebook was supposed to be more secure with the ssl added. Anyway, I have lost all your lessons that you have been sending after this one. If it is okay with you I would really appreciate you sending the emails from this lesson on to my new email. Thanks Tina

Eric, What does one do when one has a number of domains and websites? Do you set up an email for each one? I have gmail I Use only for Google, but my general address for everything else. I admit it is unwieldy, but have never known what to do. I just use audrey@….

Thanks, Eric, for the excellent post. I’ve always used my name, or at least parts of it, because I wanted people I contacted to know that there was a real person at the other end. But, when I sometimes subscribe to a free offer, I use an address that I know I can dump all of the spam from marketers who were given my address by those who claim not to share.

      Hi,
I am aware how important is to know this. I did not know enough when I started. The question: Is it worth to change the domain, which is connected to e-mail? I am not satisfied with the domain because it is to long and at that time I did not know what this mean. Thank You!Marija

I don’t have a website yet. Could you help me with one?

    14. Micah

      Hello Marija,

Do you still use the email address for anything important? You could notify any personal contacts of your new email, and update any mailings you receive with your new address as well.

That would allow you to get rid of the domain, without being held back by the email address that was in use.

Hello Mr. Eric. I enjoy and appreciate your lessons. I am presently trying to build an affiliate website on line; and you have helped a great deal. However, I feel that I must tell you that your lessons are dated (old). I cannot get a flip video thingy because they aren’t sold anymore. Also your cpanel doesn’t look like mine. I have worked around those and other issues, but I just thought I’d give you a heads-up. Thank you so much for being a help to me. Sincerely Tony Garcia

I hope to update the outdated material, but the majority of it is still valid. Cpanel has changed with updates, but the functionality is the same. You can still get a flip video on Amazon, or just search for an other USB video camera, there are many these days. Thanks for the heads up!

Do you need to have a professional email for every site you own or just one? If it is just one, do you direct the mail of your other sites to it?

      Reply
    21. Micah

      Hello Nzeribe,

No, you can stick with just a main email address, if you would like to only use one. You could then set up other email addresses to forward to your main address.

However, when you reply, customers and prospects would see your main support email, not the email they originally contacted.

You might just want to list the same email in all of your purchase receipts and support instructions.

Hi Eric: Having a bit of a problem. I am attempting to set up an email address on my domain. I keep getting this error:

“The disk write test failed. You may have exceeded your quota, or the disk is full.”

I have submitted a Support Ticket twice. I have yet to receive a response. I want to be going forward here. But, feel stuck. Can you help? Thanks…….Gerard

In addition, the cPanel I am looking at does not look at all what you are showing in the videos. Although, similar, and basically works the same way, I want to be going in the right direction. So, your help would be greatly appreciated any way you look at it. Again, thanks.

      Hello Gerard,

Who is your webhost? We might be able to dig up some answers, by including the webhost name in your search engine query.

I was using GetResponse and they never told me to use the email address of my domain name and was getting very little opens on my newsletters. I have since changed to Aweber.

      Hello Roger,

No, the $25K Firesale is an informational video course. It can’t automatically trade for you.

Both courses are very different. The Trading Pro System teaches about stock options, whereas the $25K Firesale teaches about Forex.

Do any of you guys know if its possible to use proper emails with windows 8?
The hard drive on my old Vista PC recently crashed and I had to buy a new PC and they now only come with windows 8!

My old PC had about 15 different email addresses using my website URL but with different handles on them. There were roy@ tom@ lita@ etc so guys in the office had their own email and sales@ enquiries@ info@ etc so I could test which website an enquiry came from etc.

It took me ages to manage to get Windows Live Mail to work with win8. After I finally did, it accepted info@ without a problem but it will not let me use any of the other prefixes.

Even the techies at hostgator are baffled after I sent them a jing of me trying to set up the other emails. They said I was doing nothing wrong and they could not figure out a solution

a local programmer said I had better buy a reconditioned XP or Vista PC because that was the only way my emails will work!
He said Window 8 is for syncing a phone to a PC; its not for business use

Back at the store where I bought the PC they were not surprised at all. They said my (proper) email was old fashioned and you have to use web based email these days! They said, “I had better get myself a hotmail or gmail account and then I would not have a problem.”
So Eric, are proper emails now old fashioned?

      Reply
    32. Eric Post author

No I don’t think they are old fashioned. I do think Windows 8 has some problems, but it’s an OK system, I’ve bought 2 of them lately. It appears that Win 8.1 will have some fixes, like the start button.

If you’re not able to get Windows Live email to do what you want, I’d recommend using Outlook, which will run on Windows 8.

I just set my email account info@abundanceflow.org

I tested it by sending an email from my gmail account.. didn’t work 🙁

What do you think could be the problem?

Thank you and I love your lessons!
