LESSON #28: Building a Website With HTML

By | November 25, 2008

In the previous lesson I talked about 5 different ways to build a website.

Today I’m going to be covering one of those methods in more depth. More specifically, I’m going to show you how to build a website from scratch using HTML without any special tools…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Even if you don’t plan on building your own websites, it is helpful to know some basic HTML if you are an Internet marketer.

  • If you’re new to HTML, it’s probably easier than you think.

  • HTML = HyperText Markup Language.

  • Tags = < >

  • You can use Notepad, which is found on almost all Windows computers

    I recommend Notepad++:

    http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/download.php

  • (See HTML page building demonstration in video)

NOTE: Regarding my instructions in the video… In order to change the file extension from .txt to .html you must have your file extensions visible.

    For Windows XP go to:

Tools >> Folder Options >> Click the “View” tab >> Make sure there is NO checkmark by “Hide extensions for known file types”

    For Windows Vista:

    1. Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.

    2. Click the View tab, and then, under Advanced settings clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.

  • You can test the “validity” of your HTML at:

    http://validator.w3.org

  • But it’s generally OK if your code isn’t totally valid (most of my sites aren’t), as long as it looks OK in all the major browsers…

  • You can test your website on multiple browsers for free at:

    http://browsershots.org/

  • You can learn everything you need to know about HTML for free on the web. Here are some places to start:

http://www.w3schools.com (My favorite… Great resource for CSS and PHP too)

    also http://htmldog.com

    Action step:

    1) Create a web page using HTML.

The next step will be to upload your new page to the web, and I’ll be covering that in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below 🙂

    Have a great day!

Eric, this has been so cool! I could already read a bit of it but for someone who can’t spell HTML, this was an eyeopener! Especially want to thank you for the resources for checking the code in different browsers–nifty….

      Hi Eric,

I have watched every single of your videos and I am a huge fan. I’ve recommended your videos to many of my friends.

I started watching and doing the actions to video #28 and I’m stuck on the very first action – renaming of the notepad page from a .txt to a .html.

My note pad doesn’t come up with a name that has the “.txt” after the name, so when I renamed the file ‘index.html’it’s not saved as an html page.

Does this make sense? What am I doing wrong?

I have a problem. When you opened the text document and renaming it as index.html, it asked you a question and from there it converted into your personal site. On my computer, when i change the name to index.html, it does not ask me a thing and simply stays as a text and does not convert to a site like on your video. how do i fix this please?

Hello Eric, seems to be a problem with getting today’s lesson, please advise. I think http://www.about.com has a great tutorial for html they will also give you a certificate if you complete the course, which is free.

That was my fault for not mentioning this in the video, because many people’s Windows settings by default do not show the file extension.

You must have your file extensions visible.

      For Windows XP go to:

      Tools >> Folder Options

      Click the “View” tab

Make sure there is NO checkmark by “Hide extensions for known file types”

      For Windows Vista:

      1. Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.

      2. Click the View tab, and then, under Advanced settings clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.

      Thanks Eric,
Learning HTML at least the basics is indeed a good idea. You make it look very easy and I particularly like the step by step instructions. It’s also very helpfull to see the video. I’ve done my homework and actually created a web site – check it out
http://www.reachsuccessonline.com/Eric/eric.html I could not create a link for the web address though.
It only tool 30 minutes, I guess I’ll get better with practice

      Hey Eric,

Your right on the money Eric when you say, you need to know basic html, sorry folks but this a must.

I used MSfront page for years and spent 1000,s of hours during the years, designing affiliate sites for myself.

But now I outsource all of the building to freelancers, who do a much better job then me.

When I give them specific, detailed,
instructions to build the site, I always, always have to make changes.

They do a great job if you find a good freelancer, which is mostly trial and error, and lets not forget that you have to add your own content, articles links etc.

When I moved out of my comfort zone and started to outsource this changed everything, MSfornt page was getting out of control so I moved Over to wordpress and now Joomla which are content management systems (CMS) used to create, edit, manage, and publish content.

All from your browser window, if I were just starting out in IM, I would use xsitepro.com Or nvu, these application will get you there.

Just take the time to learn the basics folks, marketing on the net can, and will change you life.

If you don’t quit, just think ahead a little and go for the long haul. You can still do the other stuff, PPC, clickbank etc…

But when you start using these application it becomes much easier managing all of this content.

If your building a large site, then I feel this the way to go. There is a learning curve, but it’s well worth the effort.

I know how hard it is struggle, but just keep going. And my biggest tip would be to focus, focus and stay focused.

Acquire some of the knowledge you receive from all of those ebooks you have gathering dust on your disk drive and start doing and keep doing.

      To your success,
I wish the best to everyone here,
      Don’t quit and keep going
      Cheers,
      Jim Novak

      Hi Eric,

Thanks for making things so much simpler than others do. You definitely have a gift for teaching.

I am running Windows XP on my computer and I don’t know if it is because I am running Firefox or what but I could not make my file extensions visible as per your directions above. I actually had to do it almost the way you explained for Vista.

1.Go to Start, click on Control Panel, then click Folder Options.
2.Follow the directions you wrote above.

It was just different enough it had me doubting my sanity for a while there. I was really hoping I would not have to load Windows Explorer onto my computer again.

I hope that will help others who might also be stuck at the same place I was.

      Thanks Eric,

This lesson inspired me! I wasn’t going to bother with HTML but…my mind was changed. I taught myself HTML once (yes, many years ago I created a web “page” on geocities) but I can’t remember a jot. It is the intellectual challenge if nothing else!

Don’t get stuck in learning all the html stuff.

There are only about a dozen that make up the most used html elements (tags?) that are found in webpages.

Get a reference of the most used ones and keep it handy.

Pick a wyswig editor and start writing webpages.

Nvu and Kompozer are free editors.

When you become a little more serious about it, try Microsoft,s replacement for their FrontPage which is Expression Web Version 2.

For Internet Marketers, look at XSitePro version 2.

      Good Luck,

      John

      Hello!
I am using HTML for some years, and yes, it makes me life easier all the time when I want to do things a little different.

I am using xSitePro because has so much functionality embedded on it which save time for me, and if I want a fancy change, I click on source and work with HTML; it is useful especially when I want to add widgets, java scripts, modify the sidebars:

You lesson was helpful for me, I discover from where I can learn PHP, I am full around with my WordPress blog on my domain, just to learn to work with WordPress:
      http://michaelacernescu.com
HTML helps a lot but I really need to learn PHP now, http://www.w3schools.com is excellent to learn from. Thanks Eric.

Also, thank you for Traffic Geyser review, that one is awesome!
Eric, always I have something to learn from your lessons.

      Eric,
I have Windows XP, but when I click on Tools, I don’t get “Folder Options.” The only “Options” link I have is “Internet Options.” Any suggestions?? The tutorial is great, but so far (maybe because of the options thing) I can’t get a page to open like yours. Mine opens with all the HTML just like it appears on Notepad, and the URL ends with .txt. Thanks for your help.

You need to be within a folder in Windows, not in Internet Explorer. If you want to apply it to ALL folders, you need to be in the control panel >> Folder Options

      Reply
    22. Eric Post author

Perhaps you only applied the setting to one folder. Try the Folder Options in your control panel…

You are right Pete. It doesn’t have anything to do with Firefox vs. Internet Explorer, but I wasn’t clear enough about WHERE to click on Folder Options. The control panel is where to go to affect the settings for all folders on your computer. Good call

      Hi Eric
I use VRE templates that I bought from Joel Comm
a few years back and I only recently noticed that in Firefox they align left not central as in IE7
I have tried to fix this using the html center tag but to no avail, the support desk could not help when asked,so as you narrated the VRE videos, I wondered if you could help with this problem, I just watched the cool html lesson and this prompted me to ask
I hope this is not asking too much
      Thanks

Lesson 28 I have had problems with the video. At times I have no video and have audio. At other times I get a windows message box saying, a script in this movie is causing adobe flash player 10 to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script.

I have never had this before.

I do have Adobe Flash Player 10.x it is up-to-date.

      Any thoughts or suggestions?

      Thanks

I got Notepad++ downloaded and I also learned

I only need more instructions of how to begin the “first step to create a web page”.

      Sorry for the inconvenience.
