LESSON #28: Building a Website With HTML

By | November 25, 2008

In the previous lesson I talked about 5 different ways to build a website.

Today I’m going to be covering one of those methods in more depth. More specifically, I’m going to show you how to build a website from scratch using HTML without any special tools…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Even if you don’t plan on building your own websites, it is helpful to know some basic HTML if you are an Internet marketer.

  • If you’re new to HTML, it’s probably easier than you think.

  • HTML = HyperText Markup Language.

  • Tags = < >

  • You can use Notepad, which is found on almost all Windows computers

    I recommend Notepad++:

    http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/download.php

  • (See HTML page building demonstration in video)

NOTE: Regarding my instructions in the video… In order to change the file extension from .txt to .html you must have your file extensions visible.

    For Windows XP go to:

Tools >> Folder Options >> Click the “View” tab >> Make sure there is NO checkmark by “Hide extensions for known file types”

    For Windows Vista:

    1. Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.

    2. Click the View tab, and then, under Advanced settings clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.

  • You can test the “validity” of your HTML at:

    http://validator.w3.org

  • But it’s generally OK if your code isn’t totally valid (most of my sites aren’t), as long as it looks OK in all the major browsers…

  • You can test your website on multiple browsers for free at:

    http://browsershots.org/

  • You can learn everything you need to know about HTML for free on the web. Here are some places to start:

http://www.w3schools.com (My favorite… Great resource for CSS and PHP too)

    also http://htmldog.com

    Action step:

    1) Create a web page using HTML.

The next step will be to upload your new page to the web, and I’ll be covering that in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below 🙂

    Have a great day!

May be off the beaten path or you may address it in the future but what about privacy and disclaimers and such for your website. I am new to this and have come upon AutoWebLaw and a Legal Protection product called
IPPP (Intellectual Property Protection Plan).Do you or anyone one have any experience with it or is something like this necessary.

      Thanks Mark

      Hey,
I’m using a MacBook with Windows Vista and Parallels installed.
Basicly all the things being done in this lesson as far as creating an html doc. in Notepad and viewing it on my web brouser is done differently and I’m having a hell of time tring to figure it all out. I can’t right click (MacBook) for starters and everything looks different so I’m never sure if I’m in the right place. Help! anyone.

Another free text editor that I have used is EditPad Lite.

You can edit multiple documents at a time. Use a hotkey to display the current document in your default Browser.

      Give it a try.

Great lesson on HTML…you made what I thought would be an extremely complex subject, and put it simple terms that anyone could understand. That I got it in fifteen minutes is amazing!
Congratulations on the ‘new babe’ too. Susan

Hi Eric, Thanks again for the great lesson on HTML. I created a document but I don’t have MS word. Could that be the reason my document is still in the creation format. My word program says it can’t save in HTML format. When you have time. Susan

I have read a lot about web building but I have not heard any body explaining about the
Title + three lines description + domain name,
that appears in the web browser.
      Where this come from?

      Thanks.

It sounds like you are talking about search engine results? It often comes from the meta-tag information contained within the header of a web page.

      Hi Eric…

I’ve really appreciated your lessons and have been able to keep up until now. I am on lesson 28 and I have 3 problems:

1)When I click on tools, I do not have a folder option. I have Windows XP Professional so I don’t understand why that option isn’t there. What should I do?

      2) When I connect to Windows Explorer to display what the web page I’ve created, it shows all the HTML text. It doesn’t display it as it would be seen by someone else.

      3) When I tried to download NotePad++ on my computer, I didn’t know how to choose the correct architecture or operating system from the list they have displayed. I don’t recognize any of the terminology for my Windows XP operating system. (Can you tell I’m computer illiterate?)

      Please help….Jeanette Still

      1) I think maybe you are clicking on Tools in the wrong place. If you still cannot see your file extensions, you may be able to get some free help in this forum: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/forums.html

      2) Either your computer is opening it with something OTHER than Internet Explorer, or the HTML is malformed. My guess is that since you cannot see the extensions, it is actually a TEXT file and not an HTML file. You need to change the entension to .html

      3) download the most recent binary EXE file

Eric, I’m still working on the Lesson 28 problems. I tried the geekstogo forum but did not find a place to enter a specific question and did not find anything about my issue. I feel this has got to be some little thing I am missing…

You said I may be clicking on Tools in the wrong place. I tried Tools in the Index HTML Notepad. (There was no Tools option there.) Then I tried Tools in the Internet Explorer place and that is where there was no folder option under Tools. What am I missing?

I am determined to figure this out, but am not savy enough to do it on my own. Help!!!

Eric, I’m back again…I am going thru Lesson #28 for the 3rd or 4th time to see what I missed. I realize that I did not do what you did at the beginning when you opened the Index.HTML Notepad document in Internet Explorer. You did some fast clicking and it went there. But I had to go back to the desktop and right click on the closed Index.HTML to get it to go the Internet Explorer. So there’s something very basic I’m missing at the beginning. How did you get the web page to open in Internet Explorer?

Ok…I figured some of this out. Thanks for the help! I was able to disable the hidden file extensions so now what I type in notepad shows up on the web page without the HTML markings.

But I have a new problem…Only half my text showed up on Internet Explorer. My title is not included. I’m going to try to paste my notepad & web page here so you can see what I mean…

The title (within the HTML title tags) does not show up on the page itself when you view it in a browser. It shows up at the very top of the browser, above the toolbar, in what’s called the title bar.

So I uninstalled it9with adobe uninstaller) and re-installed about 10 times – but can’t get it to install. I’ve used reg cure to check registry. I have the latest version of firefox and adobe flash. I have searced the web and tried all the troubleshoot tips – No avail. What can I do

      Hi Eric,

I have been working on building my website, and I am at the point, where I need to know the best way of generating traffic. Like most everyone else, I have bought all of the Guru Crap, that is either too confusing, or just plain bogus. They know who they are, and normal honest people like me, just need a little help. I do not have the money to pay some blow hard for a windy disertation that means, He does not know.

Can you address this question for those of us who are retired, and need to make a little money?

      Thank you,

I’ll be covering traffic generation extensively in my lessons.

Generally speaking, you can either buy it or work for it.

My favorite paid traffic is PPC and affiliate traffic (you pay commission to your affiliates). My favorite “work for it” traffic is list building because you only have to work for it once, and then you can keep those visitors coming back. Methods of traffic that take more work, and thus are good candidates for outsourcing, are SEO and Web 2.0/social networking.

      Hi Eric,
Great Lesson!! However, I paid for a ready-made website for affiliates. My question is can I use the domain name I purchased for that site to create my own site or do I need to cancel the other site before doing so? It is currently hoste but not generating any traffic. I can’t wait for next lesson. Thanks again:-)

You can use the same domain. You can sign up for hosting in lesson #24: http://www.ericstips.com/tips/lesson24/
And when you sign up it will give you the option to use an existing domain. Then you will simply need to go into your domain registration account, and point the DNS to your new hosting account (see lesson #25).

      Well Eric,
I must be the dumbest f&*$ on the planet because I tried doing a web page a dozen times as outlined in your lesson 28, and all I get is the code lines when I open it in FireFox. I ran it through Validator.w3.org and the gibberish it came out with is Martian to me. I think I’ll have a programmer do my web page. Thanks anyway.
