LESSON #29: Uploading a Website Using FTP

By | December 14, 2008

In the previous lesson, I showed you how to build a web page using HTML. But that page isn’t going to do you a whole lot of good if it’s not on the web, is it?

So let’s learn how to upload it to the web…

(Watch this video…)

Join my coaching club

Main points:

  • Control panel “File managers” are not the best way to upload files.

  • FTP = File Transfer Protocol

  • FTP Client = a software program that uses FTP to transfer your files

You can download a free FTP client at: http://filezilla-project.org

    (see demo on video)

You can “drag and drop” files directly from your computer onto your website.

  • Advanced tip: You can use FTP to backup important files from your PC. Just create a “storage” folder within the root directory (above public_html) of your website.

    Action step:

    1) Upload at least one page to your site using FTP.

Note: the file should be named index.html if you want it to appear as the home page of your website. (Or index.htm, index.php, etc)

In the next lesson I’ll begin showing you some tools you can use to make your website look nice.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below 🙂

    Have a great day!

I try to save your tips to a folder. The text is stored, but the video is not. Is there a way to save the videos?

It is possible to “rip” the video from the web, but I am intentionally not offering it for download, because I am going to be selling the lessons as a collection when I have finished the series 🙂

It sounds like a coding issue. Here’s the thing…

Different browsers interpret HTML code slightly differently, so there will always be some variations. I try to to worry about small variations, as long as it looks OK.

If you have spacing and font problems that don’t look good, there are ways of fixing it. Gnerally speaking, you can achieve a more standardized look to your site if you use CSS with “absolutes”. For example a font of 12px instead of size=2, or whatever. Obviously the more you learn, the better you can make your sites. But again, keep in mind that you don’t have to have the prettiest site to make money.

So focus on the essentials, but don’t sweat the small stuff for now 😉

I rarely have time to review ebooks, but if you want to post a link to it on my helpdesk I might be able to take a look at it. But I can’t promise I’ll be able to respond to it.

A blog does not have to be your main site, and you can have both. One key is your site should be focused and not cluttered. As long as it’s well organized it can have multiple components.

uploading a database (ie. MySQL) is different from uploading with FTP. You can manage databases using phpMyAdmin which is in the SQL management area of Cpanel.

Well i am a newbie and i must agree with everyone else that your lessons by far are the greatest to follow and understand. But, since i am a newbie i do have to work hard at getting some of the action steps completed. Right now i am trying to download filezilla-proj for uploading my website but it doesn’t download. it says it’s downloading but i have waited for 15 minutes and nothing happens. what is my next step? Also, is this the same as doing a “transfer” from my old host to HostGator? They told me in order to get my website online i need to complete a “transfer form” and that should take care of it.
      Thank you,
      Irene

It should not take that long to download filezilla. I would suggest try again, maybe try downloading from one of their mirror locations.

Yes Hostgator should be able to transfer your site for you. So you won’t need to worry about using filezilla for that, but then you’ll need filezilla later on when you’re ready to make changes to your website.

      Eric,
it’s unbelievable how easy is to follow your lessons. There’s nothing more and nothing less but exactly what it takes to overcome newbies’ fear and have the steps done as shown by you.I was used to search the Internet for all of mine how-to-questions and honestly said I became even more scared and almost lost my self confidence I could ever learn all the stuff mixed up with all and everything in it at once. The way you are teaching is just the opposite: breaking the fear and pushing up to make first simple steps just in right order they should be done.
      Eric, many thanks :))
Learning and going forward with you is so easy whatever the topic is of your great tips.

All the lessons have been great. However My computer was infected with the Trojan virus. So I lost the TOOLS>>FOLDER OPTIONS>> menu. And the lessons on HTML requires to have this feature in order to upload my copy(web page)from my Notepad to live website. if there is someone out there who can advise me on getting that TOOLS, FOLDER OPTIONS back on my computer I would reeeeeeaaaaaallllllyyyyy appreciate it .Thanks in advance.

Hi. Check out my site. Haven’t done any html on it yet other than copy & paste for my links. I had to figure out where to put it on the builder page by myself, though. Does that count? I plan on redoing everything when I know exactly what I’m doing or when we start making money & I can quit my job to have enough time to do all the work that needs to be done to make our site look the way I want it to. It’s close now but I want to tweek it some more. Let me know what you think of it: http://www.dragonstarz.com

      Hello Robert,

We recommend that you contact the support staff where you purchased your domain names. They should be able to help you update your domain name servers to your Hostgator hosting.

      Hi Eric,

First of all I want to say that I think you have a great site here that’s helping a lot of us that are technically challenged. Thanks for your time and please keep this going. But I do have a question about websites. Right now I have a squeeze page set up- Real Estate related- but I want to get rid of it & set up a wordpress blog instead. I have an aweber account & cpanel access to the domain. What’s the best way to do this? Thanks,

      Stan

    18. Eric Post author

You can keep your squeeze page and also setup wordpress (or you can get rid of your squeeze page if you want… or you can re-create the squeeze page as a WP page).

In lesson #33 you will see how to easily install WP from within your Cpanel.

      Hi Eric,
This maybe is out of topic but I need your help concerning this thing. I am an affiliate marketer of clickbank but as of now they still don’t send the commission through paypal but through check. My Problem is, I don’t have a bank account in the US how will I convert it into cash in the Philippines. Is there any other way where I will receive my commission in the internet without any problem? Please help me.

We have a website and I have added my email address to my google profile so I won’t need to login in seperately when I need to.

My site has been up for a few years but I just started updating it. We are an IT consulting frim in Nigeria. I strategy is to partner with application firms with a strong value proposition.

I designed my site using Drupal. Very easy o get a site up that way. It is a nice content management solution. Joomla is also a strong contender but Drupal works fine for me.

Base on that link there is no Philippines in the list of countries qualified to receive commission via direct deposit. What shall I do?

    24. Eric Post author

I am pretty sure there are banks in the Philippines which will allow you to deposit a US check.

I suppose an alternative would be to establish a US bank account. It may take a bit of work, but it is possible.

Hi Eric, I bought a resell rights business, and when I uploaded the pages, I get a index.html and the end of my url. So now, this is what the site is called http://tradingprosystemvideos.net/index.html How can I get rid of that? Of course I just want the site name there.

BTW, thanks a lot for all the free info you give out here!

Looks fine to me! If you just type in the domain name into your browser it should not show the index.html in the address. But if you type in the index.html it will show. That’s the way it generally works.

      Eric,

      Please answer the following questions:

I spent 2 days to load all videos on my computer, this is too much. The time is money and I do not want my customers spend so much time. Any advises?

My PLR rights and Tradingology.com, any possible conflicts?

It looks like the user should have the software to follow this training material. How it could be obtained, how much cost, etc.?

I believe these 41 videos should be viewed in a particular order. Is it true?

Where I can find (what is file name) of 35 minutes video that you suggested for FREE?

      Thank you,
      Vladimir

Hi Vladimir, Please use the helpdesk for these kind of product-specific questions in the future 😉

      1) Sure. You can set up a password protected member area and offer them the option to stream the videos online without having to download them. I mention this in the tutorial.

      2) No conflicts.

      3) The platform in the videos is thinkorswim, which is free with an account. Or they can download the “papertrading” version of thinkorswim. But the principles taught can be used with any platform.

      3) Yes they are already in order, and listed in the member area which is included in your downloads.

      4) I am not sure which video you are referring to.

Hiya’, I bought the Trading Pro System reseller package and have been struggling to get it up and running. Can’t wait. My clickbank link works…etc./..I’m getting closer.

For some odd reason I can’t get to the zip files. I followed all the instructions to upload to the member area all of the video zip files.

I can see them in Filezilla. I examined the source view and the link tags in the member area files look like the zip file names they are supposed to be pointing to.

When I uploaded the zip files I made sure I opened up the Member directory in the right hand window above the list of files, so I am fairly certain that I “uploaded the video zip files into the Member Area directory” per the instructional video.

Do the zip files have to be unzipped before uploading to the Member Area?

Any help? I am so close I can taste it. I am excited to represent this product and I want to drive traffic to the Daily Market Advantage as well. I am making my monthly bills with the Trading Pro System and owe a great sense of relief after a long period of unemployment. Please help…….Captain Kirk

Here is an email I got from ClickBank. I removed the statement from “Explosive Strategy #3” which stated “you can make thousands….etc…” and instead said “you can make money”. Also in “explosive Strategy #5” I removed the statement “instead of making 1 or 2 thousand per month you can make 4 or 5 thousand per month.”

Your site needs more focus, as a whole and on each page. “Variety” sites can be good for grabbing seach engine rankings for various topics, but you would then need to funnel that traffic to a “money” site that is better designed to convert that traffic into revenue.

You’ll learn much more as you progress through the lessons 😉
